The sensor of the air mass is used to determine the intake air mass. It comprises a
housing shaped tube with a rectifier, protection of the sensor and a sensor module
screwed on the outside.
It is mounted in the suction pipe between the air filter housing and the intake
manifold. In the airstream two metal film resistors which are temperature
dependent and are placed on a glass membrane they are. The first resistor (RT) is
a temperature sensor and measured air temperature. The second resistor (RS) is
used to record the airflow. Depending on the amount of intake air, resistor RS is
cooled more or less. To match the constant temperature difference between the
resistance RT and RS, the current flow through resistor RS must be dynamically
regulated by electronics. This filament current serves as measurement for the
corresponding air mass being sucked by the engine. This value is required by the
control unit of engine control system to calculate the amount of fuel needed.
