• 412 – Corrosive Liquids, Round, Ribbed
• VAC – Vacuum

Intermodal
Basics:
• Stainless Steel, Dome Top, Can be insulated/jacketed
• Can carry a wide variety of chemicals - Petroleum, Paint, Oxidizers, Acids
• 6340 Gallons, 58 PSI
Hazards:
• Various - Can carry a wide variety of chemicals
Problems:
• Usually made in other countries = metric hose threads ** Get DCIU # for info.

MC331
Basics:
• High pressure tank, 250 PSI, Rounded on both ends
• ½ “ thick, 9500 gallons
Hazards:
• Flammable Vapors, Asphyxiation
Problems:
• Need help from contractor to offload. ** Some companies say it’s OK to roll it

MC338
Basics:
• Cryogenic Liquid tank: at least 150°F below zero.
• Jacketed - 6000 gallons
Hazards:
• Frost Bite, Asphyxiation
• Top is dangerous if truck on its side
Problems:
• Packing valve is the most common leak … Cannot see, have driver make a map

DOT406
Basics:
• Non-pressure/Gravity flow, Smooth, Multiple compartments
• Flammable Liquids
Hazards:

• Fire, Toxic Vapors


Problems:
• When filled with diesel side to side waves are a risk because of freeway weight limits
• Fire - Empty tanks are more hazardous
• Tank walls are thin

DOT407
Basics:
• Dome Top, Round Ends, Inner SS tank, outer Aluminum (if jacketed)
• Low pressure 20-30 psi, Air load/unload
• 35,500 pounds max. load (<13 lbs/gallon)
Hazards:
• Fire, Poison, Corrosive
Problems:
• Multiple hazards
• Must shut off air to trailer.
• No air pressure, no unload

DOT412
Basics:
• Low Pressure
• Corrosive Liquids Tank
• 16 pounds per gallon load capacity (98% sulfuric)
• Usually non-jacketed (Ribs show)
• Round but nearly flat ends
Hazards:
• Corrosives, Flammables, Poisons
Problems:
• Takes some pressure to offload product
• Usually has several compartments
• May have a liner, may not

Vacuum Truck
Basics:
• Just a small 412 or 407-Low Pressure
• Hazardous Waste-Oils, Fuels, mixtures
Hazards:
• Flammables, Mild Corrosives (pH 3/5-10)
Problems:
• Leak at top (rollover)
• No lining
Usage:
• Hazardous wastes

• These tanks are being converted to DOT-407/412 specifications on or after 09/01/93.


Design Pressure:
• 25 PSI min. internal 35 PSI (typical)
• 15 PSI external
Construction:
** MS Mild Steel (typical)
• SS Stainless Steel
• Shell/head Thickness: .187 to .250 in. MS (typical)
Venting System:
• 13 in. spring loaded w/ 3 in. rupture disc for corrosive service
• A few of the tanks have linings - rubber, teflon, etc.
