Mincom – Denver, CO

Introduction

A UNIX Minestar project required upgrading for demonstration to an Indonesian client on

Windows NT. In addition to the Minestar project, Achmad Hawadi provided an updated
MineScape project that included new blocks and reserves. As part of the upgrade, problems
encountered were fixed. The basis of the Minestar project was the file mstar2.tar.Z. The basis of
the MineScape Project was the file bpndemo.zip. This document will relate to version 4.114c
Patch05.

Interactive scheduling requires moving from form to CAD extensively. It is strongly

recommended to download Tweak UI from Microsoft and set window focus to pointer. Tweak
UI is free and can be downloaded at
http://www.microsoft.com/ntworkstation/downloads/powertoys/networking/nttweakui.asp. A
reasonable setting for Tweak UI window activation is shown below.

CAD Blocks – Pre-Schedule

This is an optional step. For the purpose of demonstration it may be desirable to load the
designpolygons into cad to give it a fresh look. This should be done as follows. MineScape
Explorer, Select the blocks folder, Select the Import icon. Fill out the form as shown below, and
Apply or OK.

Delete Minestar Blocks – Pre-Schedule

These steps are optional. They will give a new Minestar prior to demonstrating. Reset the
schedule by using the menu option, Backtrack>> Reset.

Delete the blocks from Minestar. Use the menu option, Tools>> Blks>> BlkDel List file. Fill the
form out as shown below and select OK.
Load the Reserves Data File into Minestar

Note that this step should only be undertaken after deleting the blocks as outlined in the
previous section. (This document assumes that the data file has been created from the
reformatted table, rfm_blk01. Note that the saved formspec, blks_to_mstar, has the input to
create the data file from the reformatted table.) Use the menu option Tools>> Blks>> Blk Load.
Fill out the form as shown and select OK.

Check That the Reserves Loaded

Open the design file sched_graph. Reference the blocks design file layer, P01_Blks. Make
certain that the Pick Mode is selected (“Allow Picking”).
Put the view in the orientation that will be used for plotting. Use the menu option Settings>>
View>> View settings manager. Load the view, Pit. Select Ok fit the screen, and center the
view.

Post the block names to a new layer using the menu option Output>> Raw Item Post. Fill the
screen out as shown below (formspec name, blkname) and select OK. Note that version 4.115
will allow for posting multiple raw block items.

Note that you should have 172 pieces of text.

Run the Block Updates

There are two raw block updates. One calculates the total burden, R_BIGUS, and the other
assigns the bearing of mining for progress plans, R_MININGDIR.

For the total burden update fill out the form as shown below and select OK. The menu option is
Tools>> Blks>> Mstar MPL Updt Node.

Post the raw block item R_BIGUS as using the menu option Output>> Raw Item Post to check.
You should have 172 posting items.

In CAD Measure the bearing of the expected direction of mining. Update the mining direction
item, R_MININGDIR, to 77 using the menu option Tools>> Blks>> Mstar MPL Updt Node. This
assumes mining from SW to NE.
Spot-check a block by setting the system block, and listing the Raw Record. (While in the
blocks design you can use the menu item System>> Block, but this does not currently work from
a reference.) In the Minestar window enter the command blkset P01B02S04. Use the menu
option Information>> List Record. Select the Record Name in the pull down as shown.

Scroll to the bottom of the list to check R_MININGDIR.

Output Graphics from Raw Blocks

As well as checking the input and updating of the raw blocks, you can also get some pretty
useful presentation quality graphics. For example, do a posting and rainbow block map for
R_A_ASH.

First post the value using the menu option Output>> Raw Item Post. There is a formspec,
a_ash to aid. The form is shown below.
Do the rainbow polygons using the menu option Output>> Raw Item Color. Note that the Check
Min/Max button will report the minimum and maximum values associated with the active blocks.
Note that this takes some time to feed the entire set of block names to Minestar, so unless
needed, don’t select it. The A ash values range from 6.7 to 7.6. Make the minimum and
maximum entries 6.7 and 7.6 respectively.

The resulting graphics will resemble that shown below.

Set Up the Specs for Interactive Scheduling

Close the sched_graph design and open the blocks design file for write access. Make the layer,
P01_Blks, active. Turn any other designpolygon or poly3d layers off.

Review the shading spec using the menu option Interactive>> Setup>> Shading Spc.

The target materials are used with the commands Interactive>> Rem To Targets and Rem To
Inventory. The summary, PRODSUM, is a monthly production summary. The PM_TT_MASS
item is the total monthly coal production. The variable item, IV_TT_INVTONS, is a sum of the
individual seam in pit summaries.
In order to schedule interactively the blocks must conform to the hierarchy defined in Minestar.

There are several conditions that a block can have, particularly when multiple material types are
carried in one block. The entries shown above define the display attributes to use when
determining the block condition in Minestar. The order of the materials is defined in the Coloring
Scheme table on the Coloring tab.

The condition Full Bench is when the uppermost material type with remaining material has not
had any of that material removed.

The Single Partial Bench condition is when the uppermost material type with remaining material
has been partially removed, and materials types below have not been removed.

The Multiple Partial Bench condition occurs when more than one of the uppermost materials
with remaining material has been partially removed.

The Empty Bench is when all of the materials have been 100% removed.

Undermined Bench is when a material removed has a material above it that has not been at
least partially removed.

Not Found in Minestar is a condition that is reached when a block in CAD has not been loaded
into the Raw Block Record.

Condition not defined is when the condition cannot be determined using the above criteria.

The line attributes only apply to poly3d objects since the designpolygon colors are based on the
side definitions.
The level corresponding to hierarchy is the hierarchy level for bench. This Minestar does not
use benches so the highest level should be used, e.g. PIT.

The bench layer table specifies what layer the blocks are on. This is subsequently used to limit
selection by bench. Since this Minestar does not have benches in the traditional sense, this will
not be used to limit selection, but still needs to be specified. Note that benches can be repeated
over several layers.

The Minestar Constant is a list of all available items for the additional shading item. Since there
is not really an additional shading item in this set up, the constant is set to STRIP in Minestar.
The checking of the constant is on itself specified by the CONSTANTS and OTHER_ITEM
entries. Some scheduling models use additional levels of hierarchy or Raw Block Items for the
other shading item.

The items in the table should be listed in the order that they will be scheduled, from top down.
Material and Qualifier combinations are checked while scheduling to determine the block
conditions.

Note that the shading spec must be successfully written before proceeding.

Check the PC Items

Each qualifier in the coloring table requires a Minestar variable that tracks the percentage of the
qualifier/material combination remaining in the block. In order to aid in creating these, the menu
item Interactive>> Setup>> PC Items is included. Use the menu item to check/create the PC
items for UPR MID and LWR VOL and MASS. The UPR PC item is shown below.
Optional Machine Markers

Machine objects can be created to use while scheduling. They follow the scheduling and allow
setting the system machine item, S_MACHINE, by picking the marker in CAD. To Create the
object(s), use the menu item Interactive>> Setup>> Cr Mach Mrk. Creation of a marker for
SHV1 is shown below. Use caution not to create more than one marker per machine.

Note that when the annotations are on the machine name shows. Also take note of the hotspot.
To pick the machine, it must be selected at the hotspot.

Initialize the Blocks

Each time new blocks are loaded into Minestar, they must be initialized prior to scheduling
interactively. The tools for block initialization are all under the menu Interactive>> Raw Blocks.
All of these commands work on designpolygon and poly3d objects that are active in CAD.

The first step is too move any blocks that do not exist in Minestar to a new layer. The menu
path is Interactive>> Raw Blocks>> BlkNoExist. The form is quite simple. In the case that the
layer name specified is new, and all the blocks checked exist, the layer will not be created. The
final feedback tells how many blocks were moved to the nominated layer.
In some cases very small blocks can be reserved and loaded into Minestar. This is not the case
with this Minestar model. The tool to move blocks under a specified threshold to a different
layer is accessed using the menu option, Interactive>> Raw Blocks>> BlkTooSmall.

Finally initialize the blocks using the menu path, Interactive>> Raw Blocks>> BlkInit. The before
and after for the layer P01_Blks is shown below.
Scheduling

System settings should be made prior to scheduling. Since the basetype (removal material) and
qualifier are specified in the shading spec, and the shading spec was used to shade the blocks,
this information can be used to make the system settings. To demonstrate, use the menu option
Interactive>> Settings>> Quick. Select and confirm a brown block. Escape the function. Go to
the scheduling screen in Minestar. The qualifier field will be set to MID. Repeat the function,
this time selecting an orange block. The qualifier is changed to UPR.

Leave the Mode and Qualifier set for the Orange blocks. Set the cross to end on month and set
the machine to SHV2 by using the menu option Interactive>> System>> Record. Ensure that
the hard split is not set.

Remove blocks singly using the menu item Interactive>> Remove Single. Remove until the
period cross is hit. Check the Minestar scheduling screen, and observe how the blocks update.
Set the SHV2 Machine by using the menu option, Interactive>> Mach Set Pick Mrk and
selecting and confirming its marker. Schedule some of the orange blocks by using the menu
option Interactive>> Rem Range. This command specifies that start and end blocks be
selected. It attempts to honor hierarchy in the direction that the blocks are selected. Again
observe how the blocks update and how the screen changes.

Finally select use the Quick setting with a purple block. Use the system settings to change the
machine to FEL1. Schedule the purple blocks leaving a 1 block buffer to the orange blocks.
Observe the changes in CAD and on the scheduling screen.
Advance the machines to the end of August using the menu option Interactive>> Mach Adv
Multi.
Check the machines using the menu option Information>> Machines.
Note that the system machine can be advanced using the menu option, Interactive>> Mach Adv
Cur Per.

Use quick setting to set back to the orange blocks and set the machine to SHV1. Remove
blocks to period’s end. Repeat with SHV2.

Use quick settings to set to the purple blocks. Change the machine to FEL1. Use the menu
Interactive>> Rem To Targets to mine 25,000 tonnes.

The first question refers to the first target item, PM_TT_MASS, while the second refers to the
second, shared target/inventory item, IV_TT_INVTONS.

Check the scheduling screen. Within the accuracy of the program the number is correct.
Use the menu option Interactive>> Rem To Inventory to mine to 75,000 tonnes of total inventory.
Schedule another period. Test the Interactive>> Undo Single Step function which undoes one
step at a time. Test the Interactive>> Undo Multi Steps function. This allows you to select a
scheduled block to step back to.

Numerical Output

Most users are comfortable working in Excel. The preferred method of outputting numbers from
Minestar is via the menu option Output>> Excel File. The first step is to build the item file. One
is built for this project, so you should edit it to see how the file is built.
After finishing looking at the item file you should be back to the form shown below. Select OK to
execute the command.

When the command completes, it will be stated in the feedback area. At this point load the file
into Excel.
Graphical Output – Progress Plans

Progress plan spread specifications are included for each pass. To Run the progress plan, use
the menu option Output>> Progress Plan. In order to keep the blocks design file tidy, it is
suggested that the progress plans be output to the design file, sched_graph. Since the plans
run much quicker if the output design is the same as the write design, close the blocks design
and open the sched_graph design for write access.
This creates a polygon for each step. Changing the visual overrides to hollow, and turning the
annotations on show this clearly as well as how the blocks are annotated.

Most clients want larger polygons. Use the menu option Output>> Merge>> Progress Poly to
merge them into larger polygons. Note that version 4.114c has a bug here. Prior to executing
this command, move a vertex, and issue an undo for the vertex move.
Note that the progress plan colors are controlled via the items PPFCOLOR and PPLCOLOR.
These expressions reference a constant, LASTYRMONTH, which is set to 2004. The colors will
use the Minestar table file, PPCLRMNTH1.TBL for 2003, PPCLRMNTH2.TBL for 2004, and
PPCLRYR for subsequent years.

Graphical Output – Charts

Two types of charts are available, Gantt charts and Time Charts. As with progress plans these
run off of spread reports, so two are included.

To produce a Gantt Chart open the sched_graph design. Select the menu path, Output>>
Charts>> Gantt Chart. Retrieve the formspec, gantt, and select OK. Enter a point in CAD when
requested. Below is a sample of the graphics produced.
To run a Time chart select the menu item, Output>> Charts>> Time Chart. Retrieve the
formspec, time. Select OK and input the point in CAD when prompted. Below is sample output
from Time Charts.
Updating the Block Record to Reflect Material Removed

As the mine advances a new schedule may be required. In order to save having to rerun
reserves a command to calculate percentages remaining based on a polygon and the block
footprint has been developed. To show this use the lines in the layer Surv_Lines of the blocks
design file. These lines represent the face position for UPR Mass and Vol as labeled. When
this command is run for demonstration make certain to click create file only. The form for the
MASS and CVOL is shown below, followed by the file that the command produced.
How Summaries Work

Summaries calculate values as the schedule is run and store values normally at given time
intervals, at each month’s end for example. Summaries can be created off of the transact
database, or off of user defined summary groups. The downside to creating the summary off of
the transact database is that one is limited to items in the raw block record.

User defined summary groups normally make extensive use of Minestar qualifier basetype
format in the equations. The format for this is record qualifier basetype. For example to
capture A1 ash the summary group equation would be TRANSACT A1 ASH. It is important to
define the additive item that a weight averaged summary group item is to be weighted on prior
to defining the weight-averaged item.

The inventory summary group equations are a bit more complex. It ratios transacted versus raw
VOL to determine what coal is exposed, and takes off the transacted MASS (coal mined). For
example the A inventory equation is shown below.

When the summaries are built, they are normally cycled on a period. In the case of production,
the summary is specified to re-zero at the start of a new cycle. In the case of an inventory
summary, the values are specified not to re-zero (running accumulation) at the start of a new
cycle.
In the summary one also gets an opportunity to limit the selection. Oftentimes the selection is
ALL, which means everything. As an example of a different way to do the production by
machine have a look at the MACHGRP summary group and the summary, SHV1SUM, based on
it. The summary group defines the three items that we want to summarize for the machines.
These summary group items are shown below.

The summary is on the monthly period and limits the selection to only machine, SHV1.

Items from the summary that are available are shown below.
As a final note to summaries, the values do not calculate unless the summary is active. The
normal way to activate summaries is to include them in the mode.
