3. Computer models suggest that, throughout Earth's history, there are long periods of stability that are
interrupted by changes in the atmosphere at the levels of CO2, O2 and CH4, as shown in the following
figure.

3.1. Indicate how, throughout geological time, varied (increasing , remaining the same = or decreasing ) the
concentration of:
a ) CO2 ____________________________________________________________________________________
b ) O2 ____________________________________________________________________________________
c ) CH4 ____________________________________________________________________________________
3.2. The sharp rise in O2, around ___ billion years, must have been the result of activity__.
(A) 2 (...) respiratory bacteria
(B) 2.7 (...) photosynthetic of terrestrial bacteria
(C) 2.7 (...) photosynthetic of bacteria existing in the oceans
(D) 1 (...) respiratory of animals
3.3. Explain how the existence of oxygen in the Earth's atmosphere was responsible for the appearance of the
first terrestrial life forms.

4. Read the text.
Aristóteles believed that some forms of life, perhaps all, arose spontaneously. This idea, which was not exclusively his own,
was based on direct observation: plants suddenly appear in a fertile soil after the rain and the larvae materialize in the decaying
flesh. At the beginning of the 20th century, Aleksandr Oparin, a Russian biochemist, proposed and developed the idea that life
originated in the hot, humid environment of the old land surface, under an essentially methane-like atmosphere. The ancient
seas, according to Oparin, were rich in simple organic molecules that reacted by forming ever more complex molecules,
eventually giving rise to proteins which in turn have been organized precursors of the cells. The first cells would have been
similar to the current bacteria.

1.1.Identify the theory defended by Aristóteles.

___________________________________________________________________________________________
1.2. Present the evidences referenced in the text and that supported the theory of Aristotle.

___________________________________________________________________________________________
___________________________________________________________________________________________
1.3. Select the option that correctly completes the statement. ___
Oparin's hypothesis for the origin of life:
(A) was immediately accepted. (C) presupposes an atmosphere similar to the current one.
(B) is based on an extraterrestrial model. (D) presupposes the "primitive soup".
