Lesson 3: Being Active

B11-3-01: Design and execute an experiment to investigate an aspect of the transportation system.
B11-3-10: Explain the meaning of blood pressure readings and identify the normal range.
B11-3-11: Identify factors that affect blood pressure or cardiac function and describe their effects.
B11-3-12: Explain how transport systems help to maintain homeostasis in the body.

ACTIVATE: Share your knowledge

Details Jigsaw: number students in groups 1-5. Gather all the 1’s, Notes 20min
2’s , etc. and get them to share the information they from last
gathered with each other. class
Take notes (continue on the last entry)

ACQUIRE: Blood pressure

Details Direct Teaching: Discuss with them the basics of blood PwrPt 10

Remind them of proper form for their notes

APPLY: Try it out and Activity Plan

Details Activity A: Get into groups of three and use the PwrPt 30
sphygmomanometer on each other at resting heart rate - Sphygmo min

Briefly go over instructions on the board. (5 min each) er
Activity B: Activity Plan - get students to create a
meaningful and realistic plan that will help them reach their
fitness goals.

CLOSURE: Whip Around

Details All students stand up. Students quickly and verbally share stuffy 3 min
one thing they learned in the class today, once don’t they
toss a stuffy to another person who must share something
they learned that is different from previous students. You
can pass your turn and once you say something you can
leave.

ASSESS I will be walking around the room to do some formative


assessment and make sure students in all corners are on
task. Assessment will also be done by observing how
much effort has been put into their plans. Lastly the whip
around will give a good view of what they took from class.
