Lesson Plan

Content Area(s)/Course/Grade:
SCI.K.11 The student will investigate and understand that materials can be reused, recycled, and conserved.
Lesson Topic: Date:
How can we reuse items we might normally throw away? April
Expectations:
1. Students will evaluate objects as reusable or not; reflect on how objects may be reused instead of thrown
away.

Context for Learning

1. To reuse is to use something again instead of throwing it away.
2. Reusing common items is a way to make less waste and to care for the Earth.
Instructional Delivery
Link:
1. Show class the blue recycling bin from our classroom. Ask students, “What is this?” Look for- recycling
bin.
2. Tell students, “Today we are going to dig in and find out what we are throwing away that we could be
reusing! What does it mean to reuse?” Look for- to use an object again, sometimes in a different way,
instead of throwing it away
Procedures:
1. Dump pre-selected contents from the recycling bin onto each table and have students sort the contents
by things that can be recycled and things that may be able to be reused. Ask students to explain their
thinking.
2. Have students select one item from the reuse pile on their table and have them design something that
they could do with it in order to reuse it. For example, a plastic or glass container could be reused as a
vessel to plant something in. Students will record their ideas on the graphic organizer provided, draw
and label their design.
Assessment/Evaluation (Formative/Summative)
Students will be assessed on their ability to come up with a way to reuse an object.
Closure:
Tell the students, “Next time, we will take our designs and create our reusable idea!” Ask the students, “How
does reusing objects help protect our world?” Look for- The less things we throw away, the less we are
contributing to the trash that hurts the environment.
