I come from humble family background and acknowledge how fortunate I have been to receive an

A-level education. This has also motivated me to push myself further and take my academics very
seriously. Since society has granted me an opportunity to attain an international education, I must make
the best possible use of my education and give back to society as my responsibility. I am the first to
pursue an engineering degree in my entire family of accountants and businessmen. My conditions have
motivated me more than anything else to apply here at Hong Kong.

My passion for engineering has evolved from mere curiosity into blazing love. Innovation and invention
has become my source of inspiration and self-satisfaction. Mechanical machines and electrical systems
make me awe and wonder at their puzzling designs. Having observed engineers on the National
Geographic Channel designing delicate buildings, creative roller-coasters and speed-demon supercars,
having tinkered around various gadgets from punch machines to charger lamps, having modeled a 3-D
helicopter and complete 2-D map of my own home on the AutoCAD program, I started wondering
whether Engineering is my calling. Indeed, it is.

During an AutoCAD course, which I took in June 2011, I learned many lessons and observed engineering
from fresh and enthusiastic perspectives. Firstly, I realized that designing a system is a far more delicate
and technical process which takes a year or more. Secondly, decreasing the cost is more important than
fanciful designing practices. The latter lesson was ironic yet amusing since I used to believe in fanciful
designs and byzantine structures. Daily discussions with tutors and working engineers enriched my
curiosity. I received an Excellent Design award from Pak College back then for designing twin rotor
amphibious helicopter. I further realized my deep interest in Engineering after my experience with
AutoCAD and discussions with professional engineers.

Moreover, I participated in the BP Oil Spill Contest at YouTube blog soon after the incident of the Gulf of
Mexico Oil spill. We had to present an idea for future oil pipeline construction. I suggested a new helical
design for oil pipelines since this design will subsidize water pressure and will increase flexibility and
strength. The idea was unusual, but based partly upon the analysis of helical springs and the lessons I
had learnt from repairing such springs in a punch machine. Such interests made me realize my knack for
engineering and my ability to interlink disparate problems by lateral thinking, further reaffirming my
belief that engineering is my ideal career.

I aim to continue my pursuit of engineering solutions in order to establish a startup engineering

consultancy to aid corporations and private clients in proper execution of their projects. I want to follow
the footings of AECOM which is well-regarded for its technical support services. Engineering services
require excellence and a solution seeking attitude. The Bachelor in Mechanical Engineering degree is my
first major step towards my dream.

HKUST will help me realize my dream with its outstanding undergraduate research program, visionary
faculty, diverse alumni and numerous internship opportunities. The university has a rigorous and
extensive research oriented program which has enabled it to attain a place in the top 40 universities in
merely 20 years. I have a firm belief that this holistic excellence at HKUST will surely fulfill my ambition,
my dream and my potential.
