The Advanced Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is nationally renowned and based at the Bellevue Hos-

Surgery
pital Center campus and the New York University Langone Medical Center. Didactic training in biomedical sciences takes
place at both the College of Dentistry and the Medical Center. A wealth of clinical experience is gained at the affiliate
teaching hospitals, Lenox Hill Hospital and The Harbor Healthcare System - Veterans Administration Hospital.

PROGRAM OUTLINE: 6-YEAR RESIDENCY/INTEGRATED MD CURRICULUM


The six-year integrated MD training program has been developed to prepare the graduated den-
tist for an academic and/or private practice career in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. It is an inte-
grated clinical and didactic program designed to meet the requirements leading to certification
by the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery, a medical degree from the New York
University School of Medicine, a certificate of completion for one year of General Surgery resi-
dency, and a specialty certificate in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery. The didactic training in Oral
and Maxillofacial Surgery begins with postgraduate courses in craniofacial development, head
and neck anatomy, bone biology, and physical diagnosis. These essential foundation courses are
supplemented by certification in ACLS, PALS, and ATLS. Each Tuesday morning is dedicated to
selected topics in oral and maxillofacial surgery. This includes but is not limited to:

• Maxillofacial trauma • Dentoalveolar surgery • Management of facial pain

• Facial aesthetic surgery • Dental implants

Attending Conference is held every Monday morning where prior cases are presented and
reviewed. Once a month complications are presented by the Chair. The Chair and faculty in the
Pathology Department at the College of Dentistry lead Oral Pathology Conference twice each
month.

In addition, there are regularly scheduled multidisciplinary conferences in Dentofacial Deformi-


ties, Facial Trauma, Craniofacial-Cleft Lip and Palate, and Head and Neck Tumor Board.

ACCREDITATION
The Advanced Education Program in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery is accredited by the Com-
mission on Dental Accreditation and have been granted the accreditation status of “approval
without reporting requirements [3].” The Commission is a specialized accrediting body recog-
nized by the United States Department of Education. The Commission on Dental Accreditation

EDUCATIONAL VISITS/OBSERVERSHIP OPPORTUNITIES


Educational visits/externships based on appropriate credentials to the residency programs
in Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery are afforded at the Programs’ main clinical center at
Bellevue Hospital. The length to the externships can range from one to two weeks,

ABOUT OUR FACULTY


The core, shared basic science courses are all led by accomplished scientists and clinical fac-
ulty of various departments of NYU College of Dentistry and NYU Langone Medical Center.
The multi-disciplinary rounds and interdisciplinary seminars are led by the Program Directors
and faculty of the Advanced Specialty Education Programs. The Department of Oral and
Maxillofacial Surgery includes many prominent clinicians, educators and researchers and
offers the expertise of 16 distinguished full-time and part-time faculty.

Oral & Maxillofacial Surgery
specialty. They lecture frequently at local, national and international conferences on oral
and maxillofacial and craniofacial surgery, publish extensively, and serve on the editorial
boards or as peer-reviewers for numerous specialty journals. Additionally, several of the
members of the Department of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery have served on the Advisory
Committee of the American Board of Oral and Maxillofacial Surgery.
