Online Projects, Collaboration Sites and Publishing Opportunities

Lesson Idea Name: Wonder

Content Area: Reading
Grade Level(s): 4th-5th
Content Standard Addressed: ELAGSE4RL3: Describe in depth a character, setting, or event in a story or
drama, drawing on specific details in the text (e.g., a character’s thoughts, words, or actions).

Technology Standard Addressed: Creative Communicator

Students communicate clearly and express themselves creatively for a variety of purposes using the
platforms, tools, styles, formats and digital media appropriate to their goals.

Selected Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity: KidPub

URL(s) to support the lesson: https://www.kidpub.com/

Describe how you would incorporate an Online Project/Collaboration Site/Publishing Opportunity in your
classroom:
Students will have read the novel Wonder in class, and will have previously created a character traits
chart describing their assigned character based on evidence from the text. Students will review their
character traits chart in their groups. Then they will divide into pairs to write their own story based on their
character.
Students will be given three class periods to work on their stories with their partners. Any unfinished
work must be completed at home. Students will then participate in a writing work shop to edit and finalize
their piece. After teacher approval and parental permission, students will upload their work to KidPub.

What technologies would be required to implement this proposed learning activity in a classroom?
Laptop and Internet access.

Describe how the following features are addressed in this learning experience (note: all of them may not be
addressed in the project, but most should be if you are reaching a high LoTi Level).
a. Collaboration with peers, near-peers, mentors outside their classroom and often beyond their
school: Students are collaborating with peers in the class by reviewing their charts, and participating
in a writers’ workshop.

b. Student-centered learning and knowledge creation (creating original data and or producing original
products as a result of engaging in a project): Students are creating their own stories about a
character from the book Wonder.

c. Higher-order thinking: Since students will publishing their piece they created, it requires higher-order
thinking because they are having to organize their thoughts.

d. Students publishing their original work to others who will use/care about their product: After
receiving parental permission, students will publish their story to KidPub to showcase their work.

Universal Design for Learning (UDL): For the ESL students within the class, providing pictorial instructions for
KidPub may be beneficial as the transition from their native language to English. This can also support
struggling readers in the class. Students may choose to include videos, pictures, or narration that would be
beneficial for students who have a hearing impairment. To further enrich the learning experience, students
could review the anchor chart or their board as many time as they would like. This would allow more
opportunities to gain a deeper understanding of how to describe and analyze characters and events in a story.

Lesson idea implementation and Internet Safety Policies: I could implement this lesson by receiving
parental permission before publishing. I will inform administrators and parents how you are going to protect
students’ privacy and safety. I could do this by having students only use their first name and last initial, or a
pseudonym. I will never let individual students speak with other individuals without teacher moderation, nor
will I allow anonymous communication.

Reflective Practice: Extending this project might involve publishing student work again but this time on the
classroom blog. We could film students presenting their work, and post it to our private classroom page.
Students could also choose publish their stories for others in the school to view. This activity will give students
the opportunity to become familiar with online learning projects.
