Business Card:
Description:
Matching letterhead and business card designed
using a personal logo.

Date:
6/11/16

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130
Section 4
Derek Miller

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator & Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or personal im-
age. Do not imitate existing logos or use previous
designs. Use the new logo to design consistent lay-
outs for a business card and letterhead

Process:
For my Business card page I used the rectangle
tool to create the front and back of the card. I then
created the simple logo of the bike wheel by creat-
ing a circle and then creating lines to correspond
an create the logo image. I finally spaced every-
thing and incorporated the colors into it.
Letterhead:
Description:
Matching letterhead and business card de-
signed using a personal logo.

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator & Adobe InDesign

Objectives:
Create a new logo to fit a company or person-
al image. Do not imitate existing logos or use
previous designs. Use the new logo to design
consistent layouts for a business card and let-
terhead

Process:
For my letterhead I just inserted the same
logo I made for the business card and put two
wheels at the bottom of the page to appear as
a bicycle and added the proper information on
the top right corner.
Montage:
Description:
An inspiring montage with a church- related message
that is created through blending images and also the
use of typography.

Date:
5/28/16

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130
Section 4
Derek Miller

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop

Objectives:
Use the FOCUS design process with strong focal point
and flow. Unify a layout with a consistent theme and
dominant spiritual message. Learn to blend two or
more images together gradually, using masks

Process:
I cropped the background image to 8.5×11.I select-
ed the photo of the backdrop, the rainbow with the
mountain and the clouds. The proceeded to add the
temple photo in the front of the montage.
With black paint and a 100% opacity, soft-edged
brush, I painted away the hard image edges of each
contrasting design.
With a larger black brush at 30% opacity and 60%
flow, I blended the temple image into the background,
so it looks like it is well blended together.
I added some type with two contrasting fonts; bold
and italic.
Flier:
Description:
I created a Black and White promotional flier for
a graduate leadership conference.

Date:
5/6/16

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130

Derek Miller

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Indesign

Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate
typography. Incorporate basic InDesign skills to
improve basic flier layout. Retrieve image and
logo from links on this page. Create a project
folder with image, logo and InDesign document
to keep links in InDesign intact.

Process:
I created sketches to outline my design and use
it as a road-map for what I wanted to design. I
then went into Adobe InDesign and used various
black and white boxes to create a repetition-type
design and left the picture as the lead focal
point. The white space is seen in the body copy
and also around the logo and the rest of the pic-
ture. The flyer also contains a logo and informa-
tion for the event.
Logos:
Description:
Logo for a business (real or not)

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Illustrator

Objectives:
Apply the design principles and use appropriate
typography.
Incorporate basic InDesign skills to improve ba-
sic flier layout.
Retrieve image and logo from links on this page.
Create a project folder with image, logo and In-
Design document to keep links in InDesign in-
tact.

Process:
I really enjoyed making these logos on Illustra-
tor. I had the idea to include this repeating de-
sign of a flame and incorporate it into the logo
itself. I choose the same font for each logo but
added a different design element into each. I also
added contrasting colors in the first and the oth-
ers to create a design that stood out to the in-
tended audience.
Brochure:
Description:
A tri-fold folding brochure.

Date:
7/10/16

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130
Section 4
Derek Miller

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe InDesign/Illustrator/ Photoshop

Objectives:
Set up and align a two-sided, folded document.
Create an original, new logo and use it in a brochure.
Incorporate quality images. Incorporate at least four
quality images, not including the logo. One should be
clipped in Photoshop and text-wrapped in InDesign so
the text follows the cutout shape of the image.

Process:
I set up the trifold in Adobe InDesign. I split my lay-
out into four sections with the concept that the two
outer sections would be the flaps of the brochure
and the two middle sections would be the ‘body’ of
the brochure.I used black circles throughout the bro-
chure to create repetition and flow. I deliberately also
choose environmental pictures to go along with my
theme of the harmful effects we have on the environ-
ment. For the image of the glasses with the various
elements, I first put it into Photo Shop and edited it
to be split in half along with the tree branch picture.
I then created the simple logo of the E.I.C in Illustra-
tor.
Event Ad:
Description:
This is a flier informing anyone interested of a fic-
tional concert at the Complex in Salt Lake City for
the band Imagine Dragons.
Date:
5/15/16

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130
Section 4
Derek Miller

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop and Adobe Indesign

Objectives:
Comprehend image sizing (how pixels and inches
work together)
Find, scan and import a high-quality image.
Create a full-bleed design.
Choose a color scheme and typeface(s) that work for
your message and audience.
Learn to use only Word design features without us-
ing any Adobe programs, including Photoshop.

Process:
I scanned this background image from a National
Geographic article I had previously found. I trans-
ferred the scanned image into Microsoft Word and
decided to angle it in the flier in a way that it may
be off centered. I then decided to use like colors in
order to get the image and fonts to mesh well to-
gether.
Imaging:
Description:
To demonstrate good photography skills and edit
the image to incorporate effective color and present
a poster layout from an original photo.

Date:
5/21/16

Course/Instructor:
Comm 130
Section 4
Derek Miller

Program(s)/Tools:
Adobe Photoshop
Objectives:
Learn basic photography skills.
Choose a color scheme, take a photo to match those
colors, then incorporate the colors into the layout.
Use a digital camera to take a quality image, then
download it.

Process:
I first decided on an image that I wanted to use to
incorporate into my project. I found really good
lighting, nice focus and composition. I then put the
photo in Photoshop and used editing techniques
such as levels, sharpness, saturation, contrast and
color balance. I then incorporated text and a line
design into the photo. I used a quick color contrast
with the colors in the photo and the text to make it
stand out more. The entire design really went well
together and I gained great feedback on it.
