AIDS

AIDS (Acquired immune deficiency syndrome) is one of the most killing diseases in the

world that has no cure yet. It is a syndrome which attacks the immune system of human, so that

the sufferer will be attacked easily by other dangerous illnesses. This disorder is caused by a

virus called HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus).

AIDS is a kind of contagious virus and it can be transmitted through many ways. The one

conductor substance that makes this epidemic spreads is the liquid that comes from AIDS’s

sufferer. The most common ways of its spreading process from one to another are through sexual

interaction, blood transfusion, and contaminated hypodermic needle. The fluid (blood, vaginal

fluid, and sperm) that is transferred from the positive one through such ways will cause the

receiver suffer from AIDS as well. Moreover, an unborn child of a positive AIDS mother or a

baby who is breastfed by someone who suffers from AIDS will also be affected by AIDS.

The statistic data of AIDS sufferers/victims shows the change every year. Based on the

report stated by UNAIDS and WHO (World Health Organization) in 2009, it was estimated that

there were 33.4 million people in the world who were suffering from AIDS included adult and

children with the rate of death was 2 million each year due to AIDS. This rate was higher than

two years before (2007) that was 33.2 million AIDS cases. At the end of 2010, AIDS sufferers

all around the world raised to be 34 million with 1.8 million death rates at that year. Eventhough

the victims’ index showed ascension, the death rate decreased until 10 %. This result showed

that there has been positive advance in health services in handling people who live with AIDS.
WHO and UNAIDS are the example of organizations that pay much attention toward the

epidemic. They have been affording to introduce various ways how to prevent AIDS spreads. For

example, by giving education/explanation about safe sex by using condom, needle-exchange

programmes, and promoting HIV test. As a follow-up action, on July 2010, they announced that

there has been antiretroviral therapy that can reduce deaths due to HIV and the treatment has

been tried to be distributed to all countries in the world.

All in all, HIV/AIDS is a very dangerous epidemic attacking human nowadays. This

virus has killed many people in the world covered adult and children. There are many ways that

make the epidemic spread rapidly as stated above. United Nation and WHO have afforded many

ways to prevent and treat the infection. As a result, at the latest year (at the end of 2010) the

death rate in term of HIV/AIDS can be reduced.
