1. ACADEMIC PROGRAMMES
Indian Institute of Management Ranchi (lIM Ranchi) offers two full-time Post-Graduate Programmes (PGP) in
Management - thé Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) and Post-Graduate Diploma in Human Resource
‘Management (PGDHRM). Both these Programmes are two-year, full time, residential programmes. Besides these
flagship programmes, the Institute also offers a full time, residential Fellow Programme in Management (FPM) and a
‘two-year, part-time general management programme for executives called the Post-Graduate Executive Programme
(PGEXP),
‘A, POST-GRADUATE DIPLOMA IN MANAGEMENT (PGDM) PROGRAMME
The Post-Graduate Diploma in Management Programme has been divided into three segments - compulsory
‘courses in the First Year; summer internship in organizations for a period of & weeks during the months of April and
May; and elective courses in the Second Year, The academic year begins in June/July and ends in March/April of the
following year. An academic yeer consists of three trimesters, each trimester spanning across 11 to 13 weeks.
Please refer to the Academic Calendar for academic year 2015-16 in Annexure 1 for details about term dates, and
month-wise schedule of academic and other activities. The Annual Convocation for the graduating batch normally
takes place in the month of March/April
A.1. Programme Objectives
‘The flagship Post-Graduate Diploma in Management (PGDM) Programme at the Indian Institute of Management
Ranchi is a two-year, fulltime residential Programme.
The PGDM Programme of lIM Ranchi is extremely prestigious and is rated highly in the country. Students entering the
Programme are selected through a rigorous process, comprising of the Common Admission Test (CAT), one of the
‘most competitive entrance examination in the country, followed by a Written Ability Test (WAT) and Personal
Interview (P)). Currently, IM Ranchi admits around 140 students in this Programme.
The Programme facilitates learning in theory and practice of different functional areas of management, and is
carefully designed based on inputs by key stakeholders including faculty, students, and industry experts. Apart from
the academic rigour which ensures that students learn and apply key concepts and analytical tools, the Programme
also provides opportunities for students to develop their communication, leadership, interpersonal and networking
skills attributes that are critical in today's increasingly competitive world and fast-changing business environment,
The Programme equips a student with requisite knowledge and skills, required for playing leadership roles in the

‘The PGDM Programme of IIM Ranchi is designed to achieve the following objectives:

> Orient the participants to apply knowledge and understanding of theories and concepts from basic disciplines and
functional areas for creation, growth, and management of organizations.

‘A2, Course Structure
‘The first year in the PGOM Programme comprises of Compulsory courses of 61.5 credits, spread across three terms
(Terms |, 11 & i), covering all functional domains of management. The core courses are aimed at providing contextual
understanding, conceptual knowledge, analytical skills, tools and techniques, social, cultural and environmental
sensitivity to form the base of the Programme. The courses are drawn from basic and functional disciplines and
delivered with 2 managerial focus that forms the driving force of management.
‘The second year comprises of Elective courses of 42-51 credits, spread across three terms (Terms WV, V & VO). The
elective courses help the participants to develop deeper understanding of functional areas of management. Students
are allowed to choose the courses of interest in the second year. Students who want to acquire deeper understanding
of atopic or explore deeply a narrow topic can also pursue a Course of Independent Study (CIS) under the guidance of
a faculty member.
In between the first year and the second year, the students are required to compulsorily do @ Summer Internship
Project (SIP), equivalent to 3 eredits.
The total credit requirement across two years of the PGDM Programme is a minimum of 106.5 and a maximum of
11855 credits, including the Summer Internship Project.
3. The Credit System
i. The curriculum requirements and the workload of a course are assessed in terms of course credit points. One
credit is equivalent to 10 contact hours with addition of about 30 hours of preparation and post class work by the
students.
Allthe courses are offered either as a fullcredit (‘e. Scredit) or half-credit (Le. 1.S-credit) course.
iii, Each 3crecit [or 1.S-credit] course has a minimum of 30 [or 15] class contact hours spread over a term. The
student workload for a 3-credit [or 1.5-credit] course is equivalent to 120 [or 60] hours, including 30 [or 15] in-class
contact hours,
iv. Summer internship Project (SIP) is considered equivalent to a 3-credit course.
v. A Course of independent Study (Cis) is considered equivalent to a 3:credit course, although it
class course. Each student is expected to spend 120 hours in completing a CIS.

All the courses in the second year are electives, except a few non-credit courses which may be compulsory.

Programme being a general management programme, the Institute does not award a Major or Minor in any
functional domain,
A.A. Compulsory Courses
\\ Allfrstyear courses are compulsory. For detalis of the courses offered in AY 2016-16 refer to Annenure 2

ASS. Summer internship
{Each student who is promoted tothe second year is required to undertake a Summer Internship Project (SIP) with
& company during the summers. The SIP is a compulsory, "Pass/Fail course, and is equivalent to 3 credits, Being
a Pass/Fail course, the grades obtained are not considered in computing Cumulative Grade Point Average
(CPA). However, successful completion of SIP is necessary for award of Diploma,

ii, Evaluation of SIP by internal faculty guide generally takes into account evaluation received ftom the
Pisenizational Guide (06), final report (for students not covered under non-disclosure agreement)/weekly
learning diay (for students covered under non-disclosure agreement), and presentation, Students need to ensure
Submission of the Final Report or Weekly Learning Diary to the assigned Programme Assistant as per the
deadline communicated by the PGP Office. Students undergoing SIP infims where non-disclosure agreement is
‘net applicable will have to submit the Final Report to the assigned Programme Assistant in both hard copy and
soft copy.
'v- Submission of Final Report after the due date for submission can be done only with a prior approval and
authorization from the Chairperson of the concemed programme. Suitable penalty will be imposed by the
Programme Chairperson in case of delayed submission,
The PGP Office wll not accent submission of OG Report by the student in hard-copy. The PGP office will directly
mail the soft copy of the proforma of the Report to the respective Organizational Guide. It will be the student's
responsibilty to ensure before she/he finishes her/his SIP to check with respective Organizational Guide if
she/he has sent the OG Report to the PGDM Office via their official e-mail. Email sent from personal email
‘account by the Organizational Guide will not be accepted.
vi Students are advised to update progress in SIP to their respective intemal uide during the intemship period on a
regular basis,
vii. Students may receive a stipend from the host company.
