Procedure:

• Preparing the LabVIEW codes before starting the experiment.

• Calculating the required mass of Aluminum used for balancing the disk.
• Preparing the thermocouple and accelerometer setup in computer.
• For unbalanced disk, we attach the accelerometer on the beam while the
thermocouple on the surface of DC motor.
• We run the DC motor at 1500 rpm and we take the reading.
• We repeat the two previous steps after balancing the disk.

Sample Calculation:

Calculating the required mass of Aluminum used to balance the disk.

𝜋𝑑2 𝜋(2.62 )
𝑉𝑚𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 = ×𝑡 = × 0.5 = 2.655 𝑐𝑚3 : 𝜌𝐴𝐿 = 2.7 𝑔/𝑐𝑚3
4 4

𝑚𝑟𝑒𝑞𝑖𝑟𝑒𝑑 = 𝜌𝐴𝐿 × 𝑉𝑚𝑖𝑠𝑠𝑖𝑛𝑔 = 2.7 × 2.655 = 7.167 𝑔

Calculating the frequency

The frequency was obtained by

𝑅𝑃𝑀
𝑓= ,
60 × 3.1416

𝑤ℎ𝑖𝑙𝑒 3.1416 𝑠𝑡𝑎𝑛𝑑𝑠 𝑓𝑜𝑟 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑟𝑒𝑑𝑢𝑐𝑡𝑖𝑜𝑛 𝑖𝑛 𝑡ℎ𝑒 𝑝𝑢𝑙𝑙𝑒𝑦 𝑠𝑦𝑠𝑡𝑒𝑚

𝑎𝑛𝑑 𝑅𝑃𝑀 = 1500 𝑟𝑝𝑚

𝑅𝑃𝑀 1500
𝑓= = = 7.96 𝐻𝑧
60 × 3.1416 60 × 3.1416

That’s it, the frequency for both balanced and unbalanced disk should be constant and
equal to 7.96 Hz.

LabVIEW

Figure 7 The results for temperature, frequency and amplitude obtain in LabVIEW

We can see clearly from the results that the temperature of DC motor has slightly
increased after balancing the disk. Also, the amplitude for balanced disk is less than
for unbalanced disk. For the frequency, for both cases, it is constant.

Figure 9 This FFT measurement for unbalanced disk. We notice that the amplitude is large compared to balanced
while the frequency approximately equal to 8 Hz

Figure 10 This FFT measurement for balanced disk. We notice that the amplitude is small compared to unbalanced
while the frequency approximately equal to 8 Hz

We can see for FFT for balanced disk that there are some noise frequencies that
appear in FFT measurement due to measurement error and uncontrollable factors.
However, the frequency for balanced disk should be the same as for unbalanced disk
which approximately equal to 8 Hz.

Figure 12 Temperature of DC motor when the disk is unbalanced

As we stated before, the temperature of DC motor has slightly increased after

balancing the disk. For Calculating the temperature, we use the intercept and slope
that we previously calculated in Temperature1 measurement.

Conclusion:

For this experiment, we compared the frequency and amplitude for balance and
unbalanced disk. We conclude that the amplitude for balanced disk is less than that for
unbalanced disk. For the frequency, for both cases, it is constant. For the temperature
has slightly increased after balancing the disk.
