LESSON PLAN

Activity Name: Sense of Touch

Approximate Length of Experience: 15 minutes

Age and Number of Children: 9 four-year old’s, 2 five-year old’s

Goal: To become more aware/familiar with the way things feel, hard or soft.

Domain: Cognitive

Content: Facts include: How does it feel?

Vocabulary words include: fingers, hands, skin, feet, feel, touch, hard, soft, rough,

smooth

Objectives: Participation in this activity will increase the child’s ability to

1. Understand what is used to touch/feel using their body.

2. Describe two different solid/hard objects that child can touch.

3. Describe two different soft objects that child can touch.

Materials: fifteen objects half hard half soft (i.e. lego, block, stress ball, stuffed animal,

fake fur, fork, pencil, sponge, felt, rock etc.), box/bag to fit all items into but cannot see

into

Procedure: Students should be sitting in a circular shape, the teacher included in the

circle. Begin the lesson by reminding students about the five senses that they have

been learning about. Show them the box/bag of that you have prepared and ask them

“How will we know what the items inside feel like?” shake the bag/box and ask students
“Can we hear how they feel?” Students should answer with “no” Then pick up the

box/bag to your nose and ask students, “Can we smell how they feel?” students should

answer with “no” Ask the students again, “How will we know what the items feel like?”

wait for students replies.

Next, have one student at a time grab into the box/bag and feel the object they pull out.

Have the students show their peers their items.

Ask student “Do you know what this is?”(memory) If no reply, “Is this a …. or

….?”(memory)

Ask “How does it feel?”(memory) If no reply, “Is it hard or soft?”(memory) If no reply,

“Let’s ask your friends to help us decide.” Then ask the student to sort the item into

“soft” or “hard” groups.

Repeat with each student.

After all students have had a turn, go through the piles and have the children say what

the items are and if the items are hard or soft.

Simplification: Use lower level questions that have been included in the procedure.

Extension: Time and children's interest permitting, proceed to the following: Using the

items from the “how does it feel?” activity that the children have seen and talked about,

use another bag and place a single item inside. Ask the students try to figure out what

the item is by feeling through the bag. (convergent)

Evaluation Method: Direct observation

What Next: If this lesson goes well, the focus of the next lesson will be on the

difference between hot and cold when touching/feeling items.

Evaluation of appropriateness of the category (type) of questions used:

I believe I used the best categories of questions. I would be introducing a new

concept of “hard” and “soft” and thought it would be best if I kept the questions simple

so I could lay a good foundation for this concept. I used items that would be familiar to

the students and allowed them to explore by touch items of everyday life. Using these

questions allowed students to name items and feel the items to identify if they were

hard or soft. They also practice sorting items into different categories.
