Single Shard ITU Art Lesson Plans

M Standard(s):
Art Standard: 2.0 CREATIVE EXPRESSION
Creating, Performing, and Participating in the Visual Arts
Students apply artistic processes and skills, using a variety of media to communicate
meaning and intent in original works of art.
Objective(s):
Students will be able to begin sketching their vase after watching several pottery videos
promoting different designs and layouts.
Assessment(s):
Summative- Sgraffito Vase plus reflection
Instruction:
Anticipatory set- Students will share in their groups what they know about pottery.
Instruction- Students will watch multiple videos about pottery and pottery design and take
notes.
Guided Practice-Teacher will walk them through the sketching process, creating a sketch as
a class based on what they’ve read so far in “A Single Shard.” If they haven’t had English
yet they will read a summary of the novel.
Independent Practice- Students will begin sketching their own vases.
Special Considerations: Teacher will have print out transcripts of videos for students who are
special ed and english learners.

T Standard(s):

Students apply artistic processes and skills, using a variety of media to communicate

Objective(s):
Students will be able to use ceramic tools correctly and the coil method to begin creating a
vase, after correct tool usage is modeled properly and their vase design sketch is completed.
Assessment(s):
Summative- Sgraffito Vase plus reflection
Instruction:
Anticipatory set: Students must get their Vase design checked and approved by the teacher.
Instruction: Teacher will explain what each ceramic tool is for and how to properly use them.
Guided Practice: Teacher will walk students step by step through the coil method of vase
making.
Independent Practice: Once the student has create a firm base foundation for the vase, they
will continue building their vase up.
Special Considerations: Teacher will check in with Special ed and english learners after
modeling.
W Standard(s):
Art Standard: 2.0 CREATIVE EXPRESSION

Students apply artistic processes and skills, using a variety of media to communicate
meaning and intent in original works of art.
Objective(s):
Students will be able to finish and cover their vase with colored slip for tomorrow.
Assessment(s):
Summative: Sgraffito Vase plus reflection
Instruction:
Anticipatory set: Students will get straight to work on their vases as soon as they come into
class.
Instruction: Teacher will model how to apply slip to a finished product.
Independent Practice: Students will continue working on their vases, covering them in
colored slip when they are finished. Vase must be finished and covered in slip by the end of
class.
Special Considerations: Teacher will help special ed and english learners cover their pieces
in slip so no over coverage will occur.

Students will be able to start the sgraffito design on their vases, after watching the teacher
model how the process works.
Assessment(s)
Summative- Sgraffito vase with reflection
Instruction:
Anticipatory set: Students will review multiple pictures of different sgraffito vases.
Instruction: Students will watch Teacher model the Sgraffito process.
Independent Practice: Students will then go back to their stations and begin using the
sgraffito method on their vases.
Special Considerations: Teacher will check in with special ed and english learner students to
make sure they understand the sgraffito method.
F Standard(s):
Art Standard: 2.0 CREATIVE EXPRESSION

Students apply artistic processes and skills, using a variety of media to communicate
meaning and intent in original works of art.
Objective(s): Students will finish their sgraffito vases and have them glazed by the end of
class.
Assessment(s):
Summative- Sgraffito Vase with Reflection
Instruction:
Instruction: Teacher will explain the glazing process to students then show them a before
and after example. Teacher will explain the self evaluation graphic organizer.
Independent Practice: Students will finish their sgraffito designs, fill out their self evaluations,
and then glaze their vases for firing.
Special Considerations: Teacher will help english learner and special ed students with their
self evaluations.
