Renaissance Art
Presentation
Who or what are the following:
1. Petrarca- First to do Humanism and return to classical; the thought that man is important and
correct measurement is also important.
4. Linear perspective- Uses lines that converges together in the back and they come farther apart
closer to the viewer. Making things further in the back smaller than what was in the front. Making it
look more realistic.
5. David statue with contrapposto- Created by Donatello. He was a renaissance artist. His statues
were contrapposto, which is a shift in the hips making the pose look more natural.
Who or what are the following:
7. Pieta- Means Pity. It is Jesus’ dead body being held by his mother Mary.
9. Northern Renaissance- The thoughts of Renaissance traveled north of Italy. It was more concerned
with Realism than Classicism.
10. Realism vs. Classicism- They are trying to achieve the same thing.
What is oil
painting
and
glazing? Oil painting is done in layers. The first
layer is called Grise-Black. There is no
color they are just concerned about the
light and the dark. Then they add thick
layers of color. The Glazing is done in
thicker layers and is a clear.
This Painting called “Tribute Money” was painted by Masaccio. It has Christ as at the center and also
has a linear perspective from Jesus’ head. Where things further from Jesus has less detail.
Ghiberti and Brunelleschi
Naked- is Medieval, and shows the people as uncomfortable and going to hell.
Nudity- is Renaissance, and glorifies the naked human body.
Ghiberti’s panel of Isaac sacrifice represents the
Renaissance style because it has all of the factors
of what Renaissance art was about. It has Central
composition with your eye drawn to the center.
There is also Humanism with the art human
centered rather than God, and it also has
Classicism with it having realistic features on the
people. Plus the Nudity is more glorified than that
of the Medieval art.
This is the Florence Gates of
Paradise. They are humanistic
because the focus on the
separate panels are on humans.
The focus is not on God and the
views of God but the views of
humans.
This Painting is called “The Lamentation over the
Dead Christ” and is by Mantegna. In this piece
Mantegna used a art technique to distort the
features so that you can make it look at a different
angle. By using linear perspective and shortening
or lengthening limbs Christ’s feet appear closer
than the head but if you would look at proportions
Christ’s head and upper body is way too big for his
lower half, which is foreshortening.
David Myron- the
standing symbol of the
over olympics. It was
Goliath. made 2,000 years
Made by previous to the
Donatello. statue Donatello
made.
The statue’s head
is way bigger so
David made that when you see
by it in real life it looks
Michelangelo correct in
proportion.
The relationship between
Botticelli and Savonarola was
that Botticelli painted the
painting of “The Birth of
Venus” (shown to the right) for
the Medici family. And
Savonarola was a known
enemy of the Medici family.
