Amazon Indians lived in the Amazon Basin, in Brazil, where the climate is hot and wet. It rains for nine to ten
months of the year. They used to live in villages. Their houses were made of wood, and the roofs were made of
palm leaves. Several families lived in each house. They used to travel by canoe. They used to eat fruits and
vegetables, fish and meat from animals and birds such as monkeys, wild pigs and parrots. They used to like music,
dancing and telling stories. They didn't use to wear many clothes.
When the first European colonists arrived in 1500, what is now Brazil was inhabited by an estimated 11 million
Indians, living in about 2,000 tribes. Within the first century of contact, 90% were wiped out, mainly through
diseases imported by the colonists, such as flu, measles and smallpox.
