Assignment-1 PDIC (GNEG 381)

Problem 1. Sketch a first-order step response: mark off increments on the abscissa as multiples of
the time constant; mark off the ordinate as a fraction of the long-term response.

Problem2. We want to determine the dynamic response of the liquid level in the open tank
shown in the figure. The flow in is determined from an upstream process. The flow out is
determined by the valve % opening, with a constant speed, centrifugal pump. (The level in the
tank in this system does not significantly affect the flow out because of the high pressure
supplied by the pump.) Some data is given in the following: Initial flow in = 2.0 m3 /min Initial
flow out = 2.0 m3 /min. Total tank volume (when full) = 10 m3 . Initial tank level = 50%. full
Tank cross-sectional area = 5 m2 a. Assume that the tank is initially at steady state with the flows
in and out equal. b. A step change is introduced in the inlet flow; it changes from 2 m3 /min to 1
m3 /min. No change is made to the valve opening. c. Determine the dynamic response of the
liquid level. d. Based on your result, what do you conclude about whether the level should be
controlled using the feedback principle by adjusting the valve in the output after the pump? e.
The liquid is water at 25 °C, and we want to measure the level within ± 1 percent of its true
value. What level sensor would you recommend? Give a brief explanation with a citation for
information used in your answer. f. The flow rate out of the tank must be measured with an
accuracy of ± 1 percent from about 0.25 to 2.0 m3 /min. What flow sensor would you
recommend? Give a brief explanation with a citation for information used in your answer

Problem 3. Derive the transfer function of a U-tube manometer and a pneumatic control valve,
indicate the forcing function and response in both the cases

Problem 4. Two non-interacting systems are connected in series. The time constants
are: 1 = 0.5, 2 = 1.0 and R2 = 1. Obtain an expression for the response of liquid level
in tank 2, if a unit step change is made in the inlet flow to tank 1.
