ABSTRACT

This project focused on the challenges of costume and

make-up in Nigerian home video. It also highlights the role
costume and make-up plays in film production in Nigeria. In
this work, we examine the concepts of costume and make-
up and the role they play in the home video Queen Sheba.
We will examine them within the context of the Nigerian
home video to identify the roles they have played in
portraying the character, setting of the film, creating
realism, establishing the identity of the actors and in
suggesting the historical period of the film. We will then
proffer possible solutions towards the better utilization of
these accessories for the production in Nollywood.

CHAPTER ONE

INTRODUCTION

1.1 Background to the Study

This work focuses on the challenges of costume and

make-up in Nollywood movies. Most times directors and

other practitioners in the profession seldom use costume

and make-up as aids to the actor as well as to their viewers.

This research intends to highlight this shortcoming and also

proffer solutions on the way forward.

Due to the industry’s nature as an all comers business

where both professional and non-professional costume and

make-up artists are employed, it has over the years led to

its low quality costume and make-up application. This

research would show how non-professional costume and

make-up artists mar productions because they lack the

basics rudiments of the profession.

1.2 Statement of the Problem

In Nollywood, most producers and directors do not see

costume and make-up as an important area worth giving

attention. In movies production most of the make-up and

costume are not very effectively used as aids to the actors,

which helps in role interpretation. Lack of good costume and

make-up makes a movies unrealistic and drab.

1.3 Rationale for the Study

Several researches have been done in costume and

make-up but not much have been done as regards to its

challenges in Nollywood. Thus this research attempts to

showcase the possible constraints faced by the costumer

and make-up artists in performing their roles and also to

proffer solutions.

1.4 Significance of the Study

The research with be very useful to theatre artists who

are keen and interested in costume and make-up especially

in Nollywood industry. It will serve as a reference point to

theatre scholars who will wish to write on costume and

make-up in the film and television industry.

1.5 Methodology

This research will adopt the historical and literary

methodology. Historical methodology shall be used as this

research entails the investigation of documented sources

such as books, journals internet and reports pertaining to

the history of Nollywood in Nigeria.

The literary methodology which is also known as the

analytical methodology will be used as books, data collected

from archival sources especially journals and reports on

costume and make-up as practised in Nollywood.
