Kuala Gandah Elephant Orphanage Sanctuary

Kuala Gandah Elephant Orphanage Sanctuary, Pahang is a rare and fantastic opportunity to get up
close to endemic Malaysian elephants. This truly unique Elephant Orphanage of Kuala Gandah in
Pahang will give you a very rare opportunity to learn about these displaced gentle giants.
Get the chance to ride them through the jungle, with the help of an elephant guide, or mahout. For the
brave and adventurous, there are opportunities to take the elephants down to the river and help give
them a bath! There really is no better opportunity than this to get in touch with these grey giants.
It is estimated that there are only 1 ,200 wild Asian Elephants, also known as Elephus Maximus, left in
Malaysia and this is the only conservation centre set up to relocate these displaced very large
mammals. The elephants here have been rescued from all over Peninsula Malaysia, providing them a
safe sanctuary in the wild.
Protecting the Asian elephants help to safeguard thousands of other species within its habitat. The
elephant creates vital natural pathways by knocking over trees, allowing smaller species to feed, as well
as dispersing plant seeds via its dung. However, due to habitat loss, elephants are forced to hunt for
food in areas surrounding forest such as plantations and orchards. This initiate human-elephant conflict
when they started to raid crops on a massive scale. This is why the translocation team has such an
important responsibility to catch and relocate these elephants in order to minimize the damage and
harm to the elephants.
To get there from Kuala Lumpur, take the Karak Highway heading towards Lancang District, passing the
Karak Village along the way. Once in Lancang, you should be able to see a BP gas station by the side
of the road. Turn left into the road before the gas station, then follow the ample road signs along the
way and head towards Bolok. You will pass an Orang Asli settlement and at the end of that road, you
will reach the Kuala Gandah Elephant Orphanage Sanctuary. The journey takes between 2 to 2 1 /2
hours and is 1 60km from Kuala Lumpur.

Question 4
Read the article carefully and answer the questions (a)-(j)

A black hole is a place in space where gravity pulls so much

that even light can not get out. The gravity is so strong
because matter has been squeezed into a tiny space. This can
happen when a star is dying. Because no light can get out,
people can't see black holes. They are invisible. Space
telescopes with special tools can help find black holes. The
special tools can see how stars that are very close to black
holes act differently than other stars.
Black holes can be big or small. The smallest black holes
could be as small as just one atom. These black holes are
very tiny but have the mass of a large mountain. Mass is the
amount of matter, or "stuff," in an object. Scientists think the
smallest black holes formed when the universe began.
Another kind of black hole is called "stellar." Its mass can be up to 20 times more than the mass of the sun.
Stellar black holes are made when the center of a very big star collapses. When this happens, it causes a
supernova. A supernova is an exploding star that blasts part of the star into space. There may be many,
many stellar mass black holes in Earth's galaxy. Earth's galaxy is called the Milky Way.
The largest black holes are called "supermassive." These black holes have masses that are more than 1
million suns together. Scientists have found proof that every large galaxy contains a supermassive black
hole at its center. The supermassive black hole at the center of the Milky Way galaxy is called Sagittarius A.
It has a mass equal to about 4 million suns and would fit inside a very large ball that could hold a few million
Earths. Scientists think supermassive black holes were made at the same time as the galaxy they are in.
A black hole can not be seen because strong gravity pulls all of the light into the middle of the black hole.
But scientists can see how the strong gravity affects the stars and gas around the black hole. Scientists can
study stars to find out if they are flying around, or orbiting, a black hole. When a black hole and a star are
close together, high-energy light is made. This kind of light can not be seen with human eyes. Scientists use
satellites and telescopes in space to see the high-energy light.

What is Red? by Mary O’Neil
Red is a sunset
Red is an Indian
Blazing and bright.
A Valentine heart,
Red is feeling brave
The trimmings on
With all your might.
A circus cart.
Red is a sunburn
Red is a lipstick
A spot on your nose.
Red is a shout
Sometimes red, is a red red rose.
Red is a signal
Red squiggles out when you cut your hand.
That says, “Watch out!”
Red is a brick
Red is a great big
And the sounds of a band.
Rubber ball.
Red is hotness
Red is the giant-est
You get inside
Colour of all.
When you’re embarrassed
Red is a show-off,
And want to hide.
No doubt about it –
Fire-cracker, fire-engine
But can you imagine
Fire-flicker red –
Living without it?
And when you’re angry
Red runs through your head.
