THE VSYC2016 FACILITATORS’ COMMITMENT

Inspired by the Gospel passage on “The Appearance to Emmaus”
(Luke 24: 13-35)

We make Jesus our inspiration and model as we accept the role of becoming Small Group Facilitators for the 10th
Vicariate Summer Youth Camp. We take to heart our commitment to journey with the young people whom we
will encounter during the event, bringing them towards an experience of being in a family, of becoming a
merciful catholic youth and of loving more deeply the Eucharist.

Two of them that same day were making their way to a village named Emmaus seven miles distant from Jerusalem,
discussing as they went all that had happened. In the course of their lively exchange, Jesus approached and
began to walk along with them. However, they were restrained from recognizing Him. – Lk. 24:13-36

1. COME UP AND WALK BY THEIR SIDE

 I commit to make the first step to meet my group mates, believing that they were sent to me by the
Lord, and I was sent to them by Him.
 I will accompany them through their diversity, their variety, rooted in my conviction that they are
gifts to me, as they are.

He said to them, “What are you discussing as you go your way?” They halted, in distress, and one of them, Cleopas by
name, asked Him, “Are you the only resident of Jerusalem who does not know the things that went on there these past few
days?” He said to them, “What things?” They said: “All those that had to do with Jesus of Nazareth, a prophet powerful
in word and deed in the eyes of God and all the people, how our chief priests and leaders delivered Him up to be
condemned to death, and crucified Him. We were hoping that He was the one who would set Israel free. Besides all this,
today, the third day since these things happened, some women of our group have just brought us some astonishing news.
They were at the tomb before dawn and failed to find His body, but returned with the tale that they had seen a vision of
angels who declared He was alive. Some of our number went to the tomb and found it to be just as the women said, but
Him they did not see.” – Lk. 24:17-24

2. LISTEN TO THEM

 I give myself as a listening ear, mind, and heart-indeed with my whole person- to the gift of my
groupmates.
 Using the gifts given by God and the skills I have enhanced these days, I commit to listen fully,
intelligently and compassionately to my groupmates, not only to their joys and dreams, but even to
their questions, even to their struggles and doubts.

Then He said to them, “What little sense you have! How slow you are to believe all that the prophets have announced!
Did not the Messiah have to undergo all these so as to enter into His glory?” Beginning, then, with Moses and all the
prophets, he interpreted for them every passage of Scripture which referred to Him. – Lk. 24:25-27

3. ENABLE THEM TO RECOGNIZE JESUS IN THEIR LIVES

 By my faithful listening, good example and caring motivation, I hope that they will see not only me,
but Jesus who listens, empowers and cares for them.
 I will lead them in full participation in the VSYC2016 program- in the inputs, dances, reflection,
meals, group work, prayer, and others- trusting that Jesus is showing Himself to us in the whole
experience.

By now they were near the village to which they were going, and He acted as if He were going farther. But they pressed
Him: “Stay with us. It is nearly evening---the day is practically over.” So He went in to stay with them. When He had
seated Himself with them to eat, He took bread, pronounced the blessing, then broke the bread and began to distribute it
to them. With that their eyes were opened and they recognized Him; whereupon He vanished from their sight. – Lk. 24:28-
31

4. LIVE IN COMMUNION WITH THEM

 I will commit to be a person of communion rather than isolation, of unity rather than division, of
reaching out rather shutting out, of welcome and acceptance rather than discrimination and
rejection.
 I will share in the joys and hopes, sorrows and anxieties of my groupmates, knowing that when I do
so, I build up the Body of Christ.

“One Faith, One Family United with God in the Eucharist.”
10TH VICARIATE SUMMER YOUTH CAMP|April 11-14, 2016, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Mission, Pudtol, Apayao

 I will express my communion most especially by and in prayer.

They said to one another, “Were not our hearts burning inside us as He talked to us on the road and explained the
Scriptures to us?” They got up immediately and returned to Jerusalem, where they found the Eleven and the rest of the
company assembled. They were greeted with, “The Lord has been raised! It is true! He has appeared to Simon!” Then
they recounted what had happened on the road and how they had come to know Him in the breaking of bread. – Lk 24:
32-35

5. UNITE THEM WITH THEIR COMMUNITIES

 I will motivate my group mates in living fully not only for the VSYC2016 but even beyond it.
 I will encourage them to follow our community spirit in the VSYC2016 to overflow into their
homes, parishes, friends, groups, and societies.
 I will pray that, through time, even if we may forget one another

MORNING PRAYER
7:30-8:30 AM

The day begins with a Holy Mass with the sub-theme in focus.

PRELIMINARIES
8:30-9:00 AM

After the Holy Mass, the moderators of the day joyfully welcome the delegates to the second day of the VSYC2016. They
invite everyone to sing and dance the animation songs prepared. After the animation, the recap of Day 1 is delivered.

Following the recap, the moderators give the delegates an orientation on the day’s program. Afterwards, the first session
begins.

GETTING-TO-KNOW-YOU ACTIVITY
9:00-10:00 AM

“One Faith, One Family United with God in the Eucharist.”
10TH VICARIATE SUMMER YOUTH CAMP|April 11-14, 2016, Our Lady of the Holy Rosary Catholic Mission, Pudtol, Apayao

The moderators, with the important participation of the group facilitators, guide the delegates in an acquaintance activity
consisting in forming small groups, where each one shares something about him/herself. The aim is to discover their
connectedness with one another.

1. First Part
This begins with the moderators instructing the delegates to form groups according to the number indicated on
their ID. The small group facilitators (SGF) are stationed around the venue , holding signage of a particular group
number. The delegates go to their assigned group number to meet their facilitator and fellow members.

The moderators see to it that the delegates are able to group themselves as quickly as possible, not more than five
minutes.

The moderators ask the groups to sit down once they are formed as groups.

The moderators give the following instructions for the Getting-to-know-you activity called “Free W.I.F.I. (Wow!
Instant Friendship Ito!)…Connect Ako Riyan!” which the groups will do by themselves.

1.1 Each one in the group should introduce him/herself, stating one’s name, delegation, and involvement in youth
ministry. He/She then adds three (3) things which are still about him/herself (that he/she feels comfortable for
others to know).

The rest of the group should listen attentively to the details being shared, carefully finding any connection to what
the person shared.

For Example: “I am Juan dela Cruz from St. Michael’s Catholic Mission Babalag, Rizal, where I am a member of
the Youth Choir. I love music, I am adventurous, and it is my first time to be in Pudtol.”

1.2 After one person finishes his/her self-introduction, someone else should follow, by introducing her/himself
using his/her name, delegation, and youth ministry involvement and by stating his/her point of connection to
the previous person who shared. He/she then gives two (2) additional information about him/herself.

For example: “I am Maria Reyes, a delegate from St. Joseph Catholic Mission Flora, Apayao where I am the
Youth Leader. Connected ako kay Juan kasi it’s also my first time to be in Pudtol. Then, first time ko makajoin ng
Youth Camp! Mahilig din akong kumain.”

1.3 Step 2 is done by the rest of the members until everyone in the group is able to introduce themselves and find
connection with one another. When this happens, everyone in the group joins hands at the center and shouts
together: “FREE WIFI! CONNECTED NA KAMI!” Then they sit down in a circle.

The moderators remind the delegates to keep their self-introduction concise yet interesting. Each small group
facilitator should also see to it that his/her group is able to follow the instructions.

A maximum of 15 minutes is allotted for this activity.

SESSION 1: “Bida Ka, Kapamilya!”

10:00-11:00 AM

This activity signals the start of the series of sessions of the VSYC2016. This leads the young people to discern what/who
is/are really important in their lives. This would usher them to go back to their own families and appreciate the uniqueness
and more importantly the presence of their families.

A. Instructions:
1. The SGF welcomes his/her group members to the activity in a lively manner.
2. He/She begins by telling the title of the activity and its rationale and showing the materials to be used.
3. He/She starts by asking his/her members to choose one material to be put first inside the plastic jar.
4. Then, the second until all materials shall be used. The SGF should see to it that the last materials to be used are
the rocks.
5. When the rocks will be put into the jar it will not already fit in because it is already filled. And so, the SGF asks
again his/her members to make a 2nd try. This time, he/she puts the rocks first followed by the pebbles, then the
sand and lastly the water.
6. Before he/she puts each item, he/she asks the members if the jar is already filled in or not yet. (Usual answer
would be YES!)
7. After all the materials are put into the jar. There will be a sharing in the small group then in the plenum.

B. Sharing in Small Groups

B1. What do you think is the reason why the rocks did not fit in to the jar when you had your first try?
B2. Why did it fit in the second time around?
B3. What do you think are the symbolisms of the rocks, pebbles, sand, and water in connection to life?
B4. What did you learn from the activity?

C. Sharing in the Assembly

At the appointed time, the moderators call the attention of everyone to go back to the plenary. Then they ask for
some participants to volunteer in sharing their personal output. Depending on the time available, the moderators
determine how many volunteer sharers will be accommodated.

D. Synthesis

The moderators acknowledge the sharers and then the rest of the assembly for their active participation in this
activity. They also point out the common insights given by those who shared in the assembly, which they use as
springboard for the synthesis:

The session helped us discern on the things and/or people who are really essential in our lives. It lead us back to our own
families as one of the greatest treasures we can ever inherit in this life. The rocks represent our beloved families and the
pebbles, sand, and water represent the other things/people in which we are also connected with. The first time we mixed
these four elements the rocks did not fit in because we chose first the other elements meaning, when other things occupy
our selves first-our life, our families are left on the outside. We are disconnected from them but if we put them first on our
jar (life) there will still be spaces for other things/people. Let us not take for granted the presence of our families.
Remember, when everybody left you, your family is still standing behind you. They will never leave you. Thus, they
should occupy the biggest part of your life.

THEATRICAL PRESENTATION: THE ROLE OF A CHRISTIAN FAMILY

11:00-11:10 AM

Connected to the previous session, a theatrical drama about the essential roles/tasks/responsibilities of families in the lives
of the young is presented. The storyline revolves on how the young are affected by the things that are happening inside
their own families.

After the skit, the moderators invite everyone to acknowledge the performers (by a round of applause).

PERSONAL REFLECTION & SHARING

11:10-11:35 AM

After the play, the moderators lead the delegates to a moment of personal reflection (5 minutes).

Guide Questions:
1. What struck you most from the presentation?
2. Does the play help you discern the important role of a family to your life as youth?
3. How will you be of help on that task as a member of your family?
After the time for personal reflection, the moderators give instructions for participants to form into their small groups for
group sharing (within 25 minutes), where their SGF will assist them. After all the members of the group have shared, the
moderators ask them for the big group sharing. They call at least 2-3 volunteer sharers. Then after the big group sharing,
the moderators introduce the speaker of the day who will deepen the given the activity and the sub-theme of the day.

PLENARY TALK: “EVANGELIZATION AS THE PRIMARY ROLE OF THE FAMILY”

Speaker: Rev. Fr. Christian “Chris” Bullozo
11:35-12:20 AM

The moderator introduces the speaker to the participants.

The speaker may begin by engaging the audience in processing what they have seen (the theatrical performance). From
there, he/she delivers the input in a lively and interactive way.

After the Plenary input, the moderators thank the speaker by giving the Certificate of Appreciation and the token. Then,
they will lead the participants to the concluding activity.

CULMINATION: “#BANALmoments”
12:20-12:50 PM

In their respective groups, the SGFs will introduce to their group members a Saint who has been instrumental in the works
of evangelization. He/She will relay to them the biography of that saint and will leave them a word or a question which
challenges them to also participate in the work of evangelization. They will write their response on a piece of colored
paper which they will drop on a box during the ritualization.

As needed, the emcees provide additional announcements and/or reminders to prepare the delegates for the afternoon
session.

Materials needed: Afternoon program

They orient the participants on the rationale of these learning tracks: To understand and respond to the invitation to see
and encounter God, especially in these degrading situations (illegal drug abuse; tribal conflicts; teenage pregnancy, etc.)
and to make a concrete response to it as a Catholic Youth bearing Christ’s love.

At the appointed time, participants go to their assigned Learning Track. The list will be posted in the registration area.

Group facilitators, who will also serve as Learning Track assistants, guide the participants to their assigned venues.

ACTIVITY PROPER
2:00-5:30 PM

The tracks serve as learning events that will guide the participants of the VSYC2016 to:
1. Reflect together and understand a specific topic pertaining to a situation affecting the young
2. Equip them to see the situation in the eyes of faith, learning from Christ’s example and teaching
3. Empower them to become active Catholic Youth bearing Christ’s love to their families leading them to an active
participation in the Eucharist.

Invited facilitators provide relevant input on the following topics:

1. Illegal Drug Abuse
2. Tribal Conflicts
3. Use of Technology particularly on the effects of Social Media
4. Adultery/Infidelity and its effects to young people
5. Early Teenage Pregnancy
6. Impacts of Overseas Jobs to the youth belonging to families
7. Poverty
8. Irresponsible Parenting
9. Relationships with the Opposite Sex
10. Child Abuse
11. Environmental Degradation

Participants are challenged to make a concrete response to the topic they have reflected upon, and commit themselves to
do this back in their own settings. They make their commitment in a prayerful way.

Group Facilitators, who will also serve as Learning Track assistants, are tasked to:
1. Be ready with animation strategies (ice breaker, short game, unfreezer, etc.) and lead the group when requested by
the Learning Track main facilitator.
2. Provide assistance in the process of the learning track, e.g. distribute handouts, collect outputs, etc.
3. Award the certificate and token to the learning track facilitator before the end of the session.

PRAYER IN THE WAY OF TAIZÉ (Detailed contents in another document)

7:00-9:00 PM (Day 2)

To culminate the activities for the second day a prayer in the way of taizé shall be held at the venue. The participants are
encouraged to whisper their prayer to God through their observance of silence thanking Him for the valuable learnings
they received throughout the day. During the veneration of the cross, the participants are asked to approach the Vicariate
Youth Cross prayerfully and reverently praying for the strength of becoming a committed catholic youth bearing Christ’s
love to their families and to their fellowmen and leading them to the appreciation of the Holy Eucharist.

PRELIMINARIES
7:00-7:30 AM

The moderators joyfully welcome the delegates to the third day of the VSYC2016. They invite everyone to be in their
designated groups together with their group facilitators.
The joyful mood is set as everyone joins in the singing and dancing of selected animation songs.
Recap of Day 2 follows after the animation.

Following the recap, the moderators give the delegates an orientation of the day’s program. They also remind the
delegation heads to submit the Day 2 evaluation forms. After this orientation, the participants prepare themselves for the
Morning Prayer.

MORNING PRAYER
7:30-9:00 AM

The morning prayer will take the form of Gospel Sharing (modified seven-step sharing). The moderators serve as the
prayer leaders.

The moderators explain the detailed flow of the prayer, where they also check delegates and their personal Bibles. As time
permits, the assembly learns the songs to be used in the prayer.
The small group facilitators accompany their group as they go through the Gospel Sharing.

1. Opening Song: Come and Fill our Hearts with Your Peace
2. Proclamation of the Word
2.1 In PLENARY: The Gospel text is proclaimed for the first time to the assembly from the stage, by a selected
person. Alternatively, it may be proclaimed by one boy and one girl, who may alternately read the verses of
the selected text.
2.2 In SMALL GROUPS: For the second time, the same Gospel text is proclaimed in each small group. The
moderators invite one volunteer from each small group to proclaim, in a voice audible enough to the group,
the same passage, while the others follow quietly with their own copies.

The moderators then announce that from this step onwards, the SGFs will take over until the last two (2) steps.

3. Sharing of meaningful verse/s from the Gospel text

Once the same passage is proclaimed within the group, the group facilitator invites the members to choose a
word or phrase which struck them, proclaim this three times prayerfully with a pause in between. Then, the
facilitator opens the floor for anyone to start, to be followed by anyone else (no fixed sequence.)

The facilitator is sensitive to close this round of proclamations when everyone, or almost everyone, has
proclaimed. He/She should also be encouraging, preferably in a non-verbal way, if there would be a long lull in
the group. He/She should also be careful to maintain the prayerful atmosphere, especially since this moment is a
prelude to the moment of silence.

4. Silence

10TH VSYC Facilitator’s Guide 11

The facilitator opens the moment of silence: “At this point, let us enter into a prayerful moment of silence, and let
us allow our Lord to speak to us, possibly through the word or phrase which has struck us. Once more, I invite
everyone to enter into, respect, and savor this moment of silence.”

The moment of silence goes for around five (5) minutes. The facilitator enters into this silence as well, serving not
only as good example to the members but also for his/her personal growth. Discretion is left to him/her when to
move to the next step.

5. Sharing
Gently, the facilitator invites the group: “At this point, let us share about the message we have received from the
Lord in the moment of silence. We shall have 15 minutes for everyone to be able to share; as needed, please allow
me to manage the time, so that everyone will be able to share. I strongly encourage everyone to listen carefully to
the person speaking; this is a time for sharing and not for debate, preaching or counseling. As we share, let us own
what we share by using “I”, “my”, “mine”, instead of “You”, “We”, and “Us”.

As the sharing goes on, the group facilitator should be extra keen on situations where a brief and clear
intervention may be necessary, e.g. a sharing that is turning violent (call for an usher, or call for a member of the
security team), or heretical (respectfully ask him/her to bring the discussion to a later time), etc.

6. Call to Action

To signal to the moderators that everyone in the group is finished sharing, the facilitator raises the group number,
and instructs one member to approach the stage. The moderators pay attention to these instructed members, and
ask each of them to pick a piece of paper from a container.

Once the moderators have seen that all the group facilitators have raised their group number, they check if all
groups were able to send a member to the front, and that these members have already taken a piece of paper.

The piece of paper contains an act or action rooted in the Gospel reading which everyone in the group will be
invited to commit to do. The following are some options:

6.1 Go to confession during the Holy Year of Mercy.

6.2 Avoid bad conversations. Keep your chats along wholesome topics and discussions. Redirect conversations
turning foul.
6.3 Listen to Jesus: Devote 10 minutes of personal prayer everyday.
6.4 Visit only wholesome sites, and share these through your social media. There are lots of bad links shared; do
your part in countering this by sharing links to sound, helpful, life-giving sites.
6.5 Take care of your body, e.g. eat well, do regular exercise, get enough sleep, etc.
6.6 Devote personal time for Bible reading; begin by spending a regular on Saturdays to read, study and pray the
Sunday readings.
6.7 Train yourself to avoid your favorite curse word for one whole month , until it is flushed out of your system.
Then, go to your second favorite, then to to your third, until only harmless and beneficial speech comes out of
you.
6.8 Gossips? Make no room for it! Pope Francis says, “The person who gossips is like a terrorist who throws a
bomb and walks away, destroying; they destroy with their tongue, they don’t make peace.” Do not engage in
conversations where you will only talk about other people’s lives.

At the signal of the moderators, all group facilitators read aloud the text on the piece of paper to their respective
groups. They invite their members to write the act/action on their own journals so that they will remember.

7. Closing Prayer

Afterwards, the moderators invite everyone in each group to stand in a circle, to place their Bibles near their
hearts with the right hand, and their left hand over the right shoulder of the person on their left. They spend this
time in quiet prayer.

As appropriate, the closing song, “O Hesus, Hilumin Mo,” is played, to which everyone may sing along.

SESSION 3: “CHIBUGAN…@tm!” (The YOUTHCHARISTIC Meal)

9:10-10:10 AM

In this session, the participants will experience a simple meal with their fellow young in their respective groups.
Specifically this session aims:

a. to celebrate and partake in a youthcharistic meal ( meal with fellow young)

b. to relate the meal sharing with the Eucharist
c. to deepen their understanding and appreciation of the Holy Mass
d. to celebrate the Eucharist as a community with more intense awareness and love.

First Session

1. Preparation

Before the start of the session, the moderators will announce that before arriving at the venue, the participants should
already bring with them their OTO products.

When ready, they welcome the participants through an animation song.

2. Opening Activity: The Youthcharistic Meal

The moderators ask the participants to go to their respective small groups. When they are already gathered as one group,
they ask them to sit down for the instructions.

When everyone is ready to listen the moderators give the steps on how to go about the youthcharistic meal ( a meal with
their fellow young):
a. They instruct the participants to bring out their OTO products.
b. Each participant should introduce the product to his/her groupmates.
c. After each one had introduced his/her product, they will open it and share it to their fellow young in their group.
d. As they eat, they may also share some stories.
e. If all foods were already consumed, the moderators move to the next activity.

3. Processing

The moderators gather answers from 2-3 participants. Then they will give a synthesis.

Meals are a part of our life and culture. We do not only share food, but more importantly we also share our lives every
time we gather together and partake a meal.

4. Small Group Sharing

After the big group sharing, the moderators ask the participants to form again their small groups, then they ask them to
reflect and write the question below in their journals:

+ Recall a significant meal in your life. Why was it significant for you?
+ How can we relate this experience to the Eucharist? In what way/s is it similar to our experiences of the Eucharistic
celebration?

The participants will have an individual reflection first for 2-3 minutes, then they will share their answers to the rest of the
group.

5. Big Group Sharing 2

After their sharing in the small groups, the moderators ask the participants to also share for the big group. They ask some
volunteer sharers for this. They gather as many answers as possible.

6. Synthesis

A meal has a special meaning to us. Also, as Catholics, as disciples of Jesus, we have a meal that is meaningful and
important for us: the Holy Mass.

We will now try to look more deeply into this very special meal. Is it only a meal? What other significant meaning do we
have of this gathering of the faithful?

At this point, the moderators introduce the speaker for the plenary talk.

PLENARY TALK: THE EUCHARIST AND THE YOUTH

Speaker: Rev. Fr. Domie Jake Cawas
10:10-11:00 AM
The speaker starts his talk by greeting the participants in a lively manner.

After the talk, the moderators thank the speaker by awarding his certificate and token. Then, they will lead the participants
to a guided reflection.

PERSONAL REFLECTION AND SHARING

11:00-12:00 PM

Guide Questions:
1. What struck you most about the input?
2. Were you able to clearly understand the importance of the Eucharist? If yes, what then can we gain from
participating in the celebration of the Eucharist?
3. Knowing now the graces we receive in the Eucharist, what are the things you are willing to commit to strengthen
your love and appreciation of the celebration of the Eucharist? How can you be of help in inviting your fellow
young who do not appreciate or recognize yet the value of the Eucharist?

The participants are given at least 2-3 minutes to answer these questions individually. Then, after the allotted time for
personal reflection, the moderators will ask them to share also their output to the members of their small group.

When everyone in the small group has shared, the moderators call the participants for the big group sharing. They ask at
least 2-3 volunteer sharers. After the sharing, the moderators thank the volunteers then they lead them to moments of
silence in preparation for the Sacrament of Reconciliation.

SESSION 4: “Habag-Asa”
1:30-2:30 PM

This session would present different situations in need of an act of mercy. This leads the young people to reflect on how
they could offer acts of mercy to people in need (Typhoon victims; homeless children, etc.)

Specifically, this session aims to be a venue for the participants to:

1. have an awareness of the various situations happening in their surroundings;
2. reflect on how they could help their fellowmen by offering an act of mercy; and
3. commit themselves to perform works of mercy for the duration of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy.

Before the start of the session, different pictures should already be posted around the venue. These pictures show
situations of people who are in bad situations waiting for people who can offer or lend them acts of mercy.
e.g. Victims of Typhoons; Street Children; Hungry Families; Scavengers; Sick/Ill elders

1. Opening Activity

1.2 Gallery Walk (3-5 minutes)

The moderator will give the instructions for the gallery walk:
a. He/she will give a short description about the pictures.
b. He/she asks the participants to go around and observe each picture.
c. When the time ends, he/she invites the participants to choose a picture in which they think they can be
able to offer an act of mercy.
d. The moderator asks the participants to spend at least 2-3 minutes infront of the picture and think about the
ways they can help the people in their chosen picture.

2. Small Group Sharing (3-5 minutes)

With participants standing in front of their chosen images, the moderator asks them to find other participants
who chose the same picture and form a small group of 3-4 persons. Should there be pictures with only 1-2
persons, the moderator asks these persons to group with person/s from other pictures.

Then the moderator invites the participants to reflect upon the following questions:
a. Why did you choose this picture?
b. In what way can you offer an act of mercy to the people in the picture?

After reflecting on the questions, the moderator asks the participants to share their thoughts to their fellow
youth. The moderator should see to it that all members of the group have shared then, he/she asks them to be
organized for the sharing in the big group.

3. Big Group Sharing (5-8 minutes)

The moderator asks at least 2-3 volunteer sharers.

Some expected answers:

+ I choose this picture of the street children because I saw how much/urgent the people in the picture needed
my help. I can offer an act of mercy by finding shelter for them like bringing them to Adoption centers or to
the DSWD.

+I choose the picture of the typhoon victims because I know how it feels to be devastated by a typhoon. I can
offer an act of mercy by giving relief goods and helping them in rebuilding their homes.

4. Synthesis

The moderator will thank the sharers then he/she gives a synthesis of the activity based from the sharings in
the big group.

All these pictures show us different situations of our fellowmen who underwent or are undergoing crisis in
their lives. Different are the situations there maybe, there is only one call for all of us, that is, to give a quick
response and help to them. How? By practicing mercy as Pope Francis urges us in our celebration of the
Jubilee Year of Mercy. By putting in mind his motto of “Mercy and Compassion” Pope Francis encourages us
to always offer our help to those people who are in dire need. Always be “Merciful like the Father”, another
way of telling us to always be ready and prepared to offer help not only materially but also emotionally,
spiritually, and physically.

5. Commitment to be always Merciful

The participants will be given strips of paper for this activity. The moderator tells them that in order to be one
with Pope Francis and to make the Jubilee year of Mercy more fruitful and meaningful we need to make our
own personal commitment to always practice acts of mercy all throughout the Jubilee Year.

After writing their personal commitments, the moderator asks the participants to go infront where the image
of the Divine Mercy is enthroned, they are going to get one vial on a box located near the image, then, they
are instructed to put their commitment (which is written on a sheet of paper) inside the vial. While doing this,
they are encouraged to pray fervently that they may be able to accomplish or do what they have committed.

6. Testimony from a Yolanda Victim

To end the activity, a video clip about the experience of a mother receiving God’s mercy will be presented.
This is also a prelude for the plenary talk which will deepen the sub-theme of the day.

PLENARY TALK: YOUTH: CALLED TO BE MERCIFUL LIKE THE FATHER

Speaker: Rev. Fr. Adel A. Agcaoili
2:30-3:00 PM

The moderator shall introduce to the participants the speaker of the day.
By practicing works of mercy we are united with our Heavenly Father because He also challenges us to be merciful like
Him. This plenary talk would show us that aside from the celebration of the Eucharist there is also another way of being
united with God and that is through our acts of mercy.

PERSONAL REFLECTION & SHARING

3:00- 4:00 PM
After the plenary input, the moderators thank the speaker by giving his/her certificate and token. Then they lead the
delegates to a moment of guided reflection (10 minutes).

Guide Questions:
1. What struck you most from the input?
2. Does the input help you understand the real meaning of “mercy?”
3. What is the challenge of the Holy Year of Mercy to you as a youth?

The moderators encourage the participants to journal their answers. After around a minute or two of reflection, they ask
them to share their answers in their small group.

When all the members of the small group have shared, the moderators convene the participants for the big group sharing.
They ask at least 2 or 3 volunteer sharers.

They thank the sharers then they break the group for lunch.

PREPARATION FOR CONFESSION

4:00-4:30 PM

In a prayerful and reflective way, the moderators orient the participants regarding the next activity. After the orientation,
they will distribute the EXAMEN of CONSCIENCE sheets to be filled out by each participant. This helps them to make
their confession flow smoothly and quickly as the time may not be enough to accommodate them all for confession.

The following introduction for the confession could be used:

In time of our celebration of the Extraordinary Jubilee of Mercy, the VSYC2016 offers us an opportunity to reconcile
once again with our God through the Sacrament of reconciliation. On our previous session, we learned that our God is a
God of mercy and His love never ceases given the reality that we always commit sins/mistakes. Despite of our human
weaknesses, God, through His mercy is giving us opportunities to be united with Him and our fellowmen by offering
simple acts of mercy. With this, we are becoming “merciful like the Father.” Just a while ago we also had seen the
essential role of the Eucharist in our lives and in our faith. Jesus who is always present in the Eucharist assures us that
everytime we partake in this sacred mystery we are united with Him not only physically but in a deeper sense, spiritually.
And so, grabbing this moment now of going back to our Father who loved us so much, let us be reunited with Him by
surrendering once again ourselves to Him through confession.

SACRAMENT OF RECONCILIATION (Detailed contents on another document)

4:30-6:00 PM

Priests are located in designated places to receive confession. Participants who wish to receive the Sacrament of
Reconciliation go to designated places in the venue.

The participants are reminded to keep this time dedicated to personal prayer with God, and help one another to encounter
Him by avoiding making unnecessary noise and loitering around the area.
While the confession is ongoing:
 Meditative songs (Taizé, etc.) are played in the plenary hall to maintain the quiet atmosphere.
 Participants are encouraged to spend time in prayerful reflection.
 They also reflect on selected Biblical passages.
 Facilitators are stationed around the venue to help maintain the prayerful mood, as well as assist the participants
