वेदपादवः (vedapādastavaḥ) – by Maharshi Jaimini

Brief Introduction: This Vedapada stava on Lord Nataraja was composed by Maharshi Jaimini at
Chidambaram. It has the quintessence of the Vedas. Each of the stava ends with a phrase from Vedas
(hence it is called Vedapada stava). The portion from Vedas are shown in bold and blue font in this
compilation. Reference to the Veda Mantra is also provided. Ex: Y. 4-5-1 means the Mantra occurs
in Krishna Yajur Veda 4th Khanda, 5th Prapathaka, 1st Anuvaka. Swara markings are provided for
other padas, however it is only to facilitate the chanting and they are not necessarily from Vedas.
Similar to this work, there is Tripurasundari Vedapadastava composed by Adi Shankara – in praise
of Goddess Tripurasundari.

वतुड महाकाय कोिटसूय  समभ।


िनिव ं कु मेदवे सवकायष ु सवदा ॥१॥
vakratuṇḍa mahākāya koṭisūrya samaprabha |
nirvighnaṁ kurumedeva sarvakāryeṣu sarvadā ||1||

May the Lord with an indentured trunk and a huge physical stature, with the effulgence equivalent
to millions of suns protect us from all impediments and lead us to success.

कु डली कृ तनागें खडे कृ तशेखरम।्


िपडीकृ त महािवं िडराजं नमाहम ॥२॥

kuṇḍalī kṛtanāgendraṁ khaṇḍendu kṛtaśekharam |
piṇḍīkṛta mahāvighnaṁ duṇḍirājaṁ namāmyaham ||2||

I bow unto the Dundi Raj whose ear-rings are formed by the serpent kings, who secured the crescent,
who is capable of collecting all the impediments into one mass.

मातामह महाशैलं महदिपतामहम ।्


कारणं जगतां वे कठापिर वारणम ॥३॥

mātāmahā mahāśailaṁ mahastadapitāmaham |
kāraṇaṁ jagatāṁ vande kaṇṭhādupari vāraṇam ||3||

My salutations unto Him, whose maternal grand father is the mighty Himalayas and who has
become greater because of none claiming to be his paternal grand father, who has the form of
elephant above his neck, the one who is the origin of all the worlds.

वे महेरं शुं िवेश ं षमुख ं गुम।्


गणेशान निमुां
्  िशवभान महामुनीन
् ॥४॥

vande maheśvaraṁ śambhuṁ vighneśaṁ ṣaṇmukhaṁ gurum |
gaṇeśān nandimukhyāṁśca śivabhaktān mahāmunīn ||4||

My Salutations to Shambhu, to Vignesha (the great Lord who has control over all the impediments),
to Subramanya (the Lord with six faces), to Guru, to Nandi, to the sages and to all devotees.

उमापं उमाजािनं उमां चोमा सहोदरम ।्
उमाननारं पां िविधं वयमुपाहे ॥५॥
Umāpatyaṁ umā jāniṁ umāṁ chomā sahodaram |
umānanāntaraṁ padmāṁ vidhiṁ vayamupāsmahe ||5|

Our obeissance to those Devas who trace their relationship to Lord Shiva (Uma Pathi), to Uma
herself, to her brother Vishnu and to her sister-in-law and her nephew Brahma.

पारतन ं ु , पवदनं , णवं िशवम ।्


अपारकणापं गुमूितमहं भजे॥६॥
pañcākṣaratanuṁ pañcavadanaṁ praṇavaṁ śivam |
apāarakaruṇārūpaṁ gurumūrtimahaṁ bhaje ||6||

My salutations to Him (Sri Dakshinamurthy), the Guru incarnate with the sacred five- syllabled
mantra (Panchakshara) as his body, the five faces representing the symbol of Om (Pranava), the
very personification of compassion.

नमो िनलपाय नमो िनलतेजसे ।


नमः सकलनाथाय नमे सकलान े ॥७॥
namo niṣkalarūpāya namo niṣkalatejase |
namaḥ sakalanāthāya namaste sakalātmane ||7||

My salutations to that Great Lord, formless and effulgent, who is immaculate and who is the life
principle in all the animate beings and who controls the entire creation.

नमः णववााय नमः णविलिन े ।


नमः सृािद क च नमः पमुखाय ते ॥८॥
namaḥ paṇavavācyāya namaḥ praṇavaliṅgine |
namaḥ sṛṣṭyādi kartre ca namaḥ pañcamukhāya te ||8||

My salutations to the five faced Lord who is extolled by the Pranava, who has Pranava as his symbol,
who is the Lord of creation and other ordinances.

पपाय पकृ ाय ते नमः आन े णे तुं अन गुणशये ।


सकलाकलपाय शवे गुरवे नमः ी गुचरणिवाां नमः ॥९॥
pañcabrahmasvarūpāya pañcakṛtyāya te namaḥ ātmane
brahmaṇe tubhyaṁ ananta guṇaśaktaye |
sakalākalarūpāya śambhave gurave namaḥ śrī gurucaraṇavindābhyāṁ namaḥ ||9||

My pranams are dedicated to that Shambhu, the greatest of all preceptors, who is an amalgam of
the five Brahmas, intent on creation, maintenance, dissolution, obscuration and benevolence and
who is meditated upon with and without his divine attributes.

प ुडरीक प ुराधीशं प ुडरीकािजनारम ।्
प ुडरीकिचं वे प ुडरीका सेिवतम ॥१०॥

puṇḍarīka purādhīśaṁ puṇḍarīkājināmbaram |
puṇḍarīkaruciṁ vande puṇḍarīkākṣa sevitam ||10||
My Pranams to the Lord of Pundarikapura (the heart region manifest as Chidambaram). He adorns
the tiger skin. He outwits the lotuses in effulgence. He is worshipped by the Lotus eyed Maha Vishnu.

ऋषय ऊच ुः (ṛṣaya ūcuḥ)


प ुडरीकप ुरं ा जैिमिनमुि न समः ।
िकं चकार महायोगी सूत नो वु महिस ॥११॥
puṇḍarīkapuraṁ prāpya jaiminirmuni sattamaḥ |
kiṁ cakāra mahāyogī sūta no vaktumarhasi ||11||

The Rishis said –


Sootha, we implore you to narrate to us what the great Yogi did soon after his arrival at
Chidambaram.

सूत उवाच (sūta uvāca)


भगवान ज
् िै मिनधमाुडरीकप ुरे प ुरा ।
महिष  िस गव यिकर सेिवते ॥१२॥
bhagavān jaiminirdhīmānpuṇḍarīkapure purā |
maharṣi siddha gandharva yakṣakinnara sevite ||12||

नृिररैिदगान ै शोिभते ।
नृं परमीशानं ददश सदिस भुम ॥१३।

nṛtyadbhirapsarassaṅghairdivyagānaiśca śobhite |
nṛtyantaṁ paramīśānaṁ dadarśa sadasi prabhum ||13||

Sootha said:
In days of yore, when the revered Bhagavan Jaimini reached this Pundarikapura (Chidambaram) he
had a grand darshan of the Great Lord of the Universe in his dancing pose, tuned to the sublime
chorus of the Apsaras, surrounded by the great Sages, Ghandarvas, Yakshas and Kinnaras attending
on Him.

ननाम रतो ा दडवत िितमडले


् ।
पपावुाय देव ताडवामृतमागळम ् ॥१४॥
nanāma dūrato dṛṣṭvā daṇḍavat kṣitimaṇḍale |
papāvutthāya devasya tāṇdavāmṛtamāgaḻam ||14||

Even from a distance, Jaimini Maharshi sighted the Lord and fell to the ground in prostration like a
cudgel and drank the nectar of the divine dance to the full length of his gullet.

पाि तां महादेव पय त ताडवम ।्
ा सुसंमनाः पपात प ुरतो मुिनः ॥१५॥
pārśvasthitāṁ mahādevīṁ paśyantīṁ tasya tāṇḍavam |
dṛṣṭvā susaṁhṛṣṭaptanāḥ papāta purato muniḥ ||15||

Jaimini with great composure made obeissance falling to the ground in prostration to the great Devi
feasting her eyes with the dance who was occupying a side (of Mahadeva).

ततिशान समाय
् वेदशााथ पारगान ।्
अिके शमके शं च शतयागं जटाधरम ् ॥१६॥
tataśśiṣyān samāhūya vedaśāstrārtha pāragān |
agnikeśamakeśaṁ ca śatayāgaṁ jaṭādharam ||16||

वनासं सिमािणं धूमगिं कु शासनम ।्


एतैाध महादेवं पूजयामास जिै मिनः ॥१७॥
vakranāsaṁ samitpāṇiṁ dhūmagandhiṁ kuśāsanam |
etaissārdhaṁ mahādevaṁ pūjayāmāsa jaiminiḥ ||17||

Jaimini with a host of disciples like Agnikesha (having locks like Agni), Akesha (the clean shaven),
Shatayaagam (one who has performed hundred sacrifices), Jatadhara (with matted locks), Dhuma
Gandi (having perfume of sacrificial smoke), Vakranasa (with aquiline nose), Samithpani (one with
faggots in hand ready to perform sacrifices), Kushana (seated in meditation of Kusha grass),
everyone of them well versed in the Shastras and Vedas offered oblations to Mahadeva.

ततो िववेद वेदासाराथ तसादतः ।


कृ तािलवाचेद ं वेदावम ुमम ॥१८॥

tato viveda vedāntasārārtham tatprasādataḥ |
kṛtāñjaliruvācedaṁ vedāntastavamuttamam ||18||

In order that he may impart the quintessence of the renowned Vedas and Vedanta, Jaimini with
folded hands, recited this Sthava ending with phrases from Vedas.

ी ज ैिमिनवाच (śrī jaiminiruvāca)


ॐ िवेश िविधमाताड चेोपेवित ।
नमो॑ ग॒ णपते तुं ॑णां णते ॥१॥
om vighneśa vidhimārtāṇḍa candrendropendravandita |
namo̍ ga̱ṇapate tubhyaṁ brahma̍ ṇāṁ brahmaṇaspate ||1||

उमाकोमळहा संभािवत ललािटकम ।्

िहरय कु डलं वे कु म॒ ारम प् ु॒ र॑जम ॥२॥

umākomaḻahastābja saṁbhāvita lalāṭikam |
hiraṇya kuṇḍalaṁ vande ku̱māram̎ puṣka̱rasra̍jam ||2||

िशवं िवो दश, नरः कः ोतुमहित ।


ताु, ितेयम
॑ ॒ ाढ ् वृ॒ ििरवाजिन ॥३॥
śivaṁ viṣṇośca durdarśaṁ naraḥ kaḥ stotumarhati |
tasmānmatasstutisseya̍ma̱bhrāḍh vṛ̱ṣṭirivā̎jani ||3||

नमिशवाय सा॒ाय नमशवाय शवे ।


नमो॑ नटाय ाय॒ सद॑स॒त॑य े॒ नम॑ ॥४॥
namaśśivāya sā̱mbāya namaśśarvāya śambhave |
namo̍ naṭāya rudrāya̱ sada̍s a̱spata̍ye̱ nama̍ḥ ||4||

पादिभािहलोकाय मौिळिभाडिभये ।
भुजािदगाय भू॒ तानां॒ पत॑य े॒ नम॑ ॥५॥
pādabhinnahilokāya mauḻibhinnaṇḍabhittaye |
bhujabhrāntadigantāya bhū̱tānāṁ̱ pata̍ye̱ nama̍ ḥ ||5||

ण॑ पू ुर युमाय॑ िव॒ लसृ िवासस े ।


फणी मेखलाया ु पशू॒नां पत॑य े॒ नम॑ ॥६॥
kvaṇa̍nnūpura yugmāya̍ vi̱lasatkṛttivāsase |
phaṇīndra mekhalāyāstu paśū̱nāṁ pata̍y e̱ nama̍ ḥ ||6||

कालकालय सोमाय योिगन े शूलपाणये ।


अिभूषाय शुाय॒ जग॑तां॒ पत॑य े॒ नम॑ ॥७॥
kālakālaya somāya yogine śūlapāṇaye |
asthibhūṣāya śuddhāya̱ jaga̍tāṁ̱ pata̍ye̱ nama̍ ḥ ||7||

पाे॑ सव जगतो ने॒  े सविदवौ॑कसाम ।्


गोा॑णां पत॑य े तुं ेा॑णां॒ पत॑य े॒ नम॑ ॥८॥

अांगाया॑ िताय िभ॒ ेदाियन े ।

iṣṭighnāyāstu tuṣṭāya pu̱ṣṭānāṁ̱ pata̍ye̱ nama̍ḥ ||10||

पभूतािधपतये॑ का॒लिध॒ पतये॑ नमः ।


नम॑ आािधपतये॑ िद॒ शां च॒ पत॑य े॒ नम॑ ॥११॥

िवक महेशाय िवभ िपनािकन े ।


िवहेऽिने
॑ ाय िव॒॑पाय॒ वै नम॑ ॥१२॥
viśvakartre maheśāya viśvabhartre pinākine |
viśvahantre̍'gninetrāya vi̱śvarū̍pāya̱ vai nama̍ ḥ ||12||

ईशा॑न ते तुष॑ न॒ मो घो॒राय ते॑ सदा ।


वामदेव नमेऽ ु स॒ो जा॒ताय॒ वै नम॑ ॥१३॥

vāmadeva namaste'stu sa̱dhyo jā̱tāya̱ vai nama̍ḥ ||13||

भूित भूषाय भानां ॑ भी॒ितभरतायते ।

सहबाहवे॒ तुगँ ॑ सहा॒

namastubhyamaṣāḍhāya̱ saha̍mānāya mī̱ḍhuṣe̎ ||17||

वेऽहं देवमानसोहं ला सुरम ् ।


सम॑ जगतां॒ नाथ॒  सद॑स॒ित॒ मु॑तम ॥१८॥

vande'haṁ devamānandasandohaṁ lāsya sundaram |
sama̍sta jagatāṁ̱ nātha̱ sada̍s a̱spati̱madbhu̍tam ||18||

सुजं सूदरं सूं सुकठं सोमभूषणम ।्


सुगडं सुशं वे स ुग॒ िं पिु॑ ॒वधनम
 ॑ ् ॥१९॥
sujaṅghaṁ sūdaraṁ sūruṁ sukaṇṭhaṁ somabhūṣaṇam |
sugaṇḍaṁ sudṛśaṁ vande suga̱ndhiṁ pu̍ṣṭi̱vardha̍nam ||19||

िभाहारं ॑ हिरत ौमं


् ॑ तभूष ं िितमम ।्
येशे ं ॑ नममीश॑म॒रं ॑ पर॒म ं ॒भ ुम ॥२०॥

bhikṣāhāraṁ̍ harit kṣaumaṁ̍ takṣabhūṣaṁ kṣitikṣamam |
yakṣeśeṣṭaṁ̍ namamīśa̍ma̱kṣara̍ṁ para̱maṁ pra̱b hum ||20||

अधाळकमवाधम अुलदळ॑

सकृ णत संसार॑ महासागर तारकम ।्


ण॑मािम तमीशानं॒ जग॑त॒ ुश॒ ितम ॥२२॥

praṇa̍māmi tamīśānaṁ jaga̍tasta̱sthuśa̱spatim̎ ||22||

धातारं जगतामीशं॒ दा॒तारं सवसपं दाम ।्

tatā̍ni vidadhe̱ yo'ya̍mi̱māni̍ trīṇi̱ viṣṭa̍pā ||24||

सव ं सवग ं सव किवं वे तमीरम।्


यत यज ुषा॒ साधमृ॑ च॒ामा॑ िन जिरे ॥२५॥
sarvajñaṁ sarvagaṁ sarvaṁ kaviṁ vande tamīśvaram |
yataśca yajuṣā̱ sārdha̍mṛca̱ssāmā̍ni jajñire ||25||

भवं सुशं वे॑ भू॒ त॒ भ॒ भव॑ ि च।


॑ितर कमािण॒ यो िवािभ॒ िवप॑यित ॥२६॥
bhavantaṁ sudṛśaṁ vande̍ bhū̱ta̱bha̱vya bhava̍nti ca |
tyajja̍nnitara karmāṇi̱ yo viśvā̎bhi̱ vipa̍śyati ||26||

हरं सुर॑ िनय॒ ारं ॑ प॒रं त॒ महमा॑नतः ।


यदा॑या जगव ा॒ ना॑राय॒ णि॑तः ॥२७॥
haraṁ sura̍niya̱ntāraṁ̍ pa̱raṁ ta̱mahamā̍nataḥ |
yadā̍jñayā jagatsarvaṁ vyā̱pya nā̍rāya̱ṇasthi̍taḥ ||27||

तं नमािम महादेवं ॑ यियोगािददं जगत ।्


कादौ भगवा॑न धा॒
् ता य॑थापू॒ वम॑कयत ॥२८॥

kalpādau bhagavā̍n dhā̱tā ya̍thāpū̱rvama̍kalpayata ||28||

ईरं तमहं वे॑ य िलमहिनश

yaja̍nte sahabhā̱ryābhi̱rindra̍ jyeṣṭā̱ maru̍dgaṇāḥ ||29||

नमािम तिममं ं ॑ यम सकृ ुरा ।

अवाप ुं ॑ मैय॒ देवा सः पूषरा॒तया ॥३०॥

satataṁ yatayaśśāntā̎ssañānā̱nā u̱p āsa̍ta ||31||

tadasyaī satataṁ kurmo namaḥ kamalakāntaye |

ईशा॑न ं स॑कला॒रां ॑ वे समृ॑िदम ।्


य॑ चासी॑िरशं॒ ा भवित सा॒रिथ॑ ॥३५॥
īśā̍naṁ sa̍kalā̱rādhyaṁ̍ vande sampatsamṛ̍ddhidam |
yasya̍ cāsī̍ddhariśśsastraṁ̱ brahmā̎ bhavati sā̱rathi̍ḥ ||35||

नमे॑ वासुिकाय िवाराय च शर ।


महते मेपाय॒ नम॑ े अ॒ ु ध॑न े ॥३६॥
