Classroom Management Plan

Classroom management is an important element to having an effective classroom

environment. Classroom management includes things such as established rules, organization, and

other procedures that are implemented to create order in your classroom. When creating a

classroom management plan there are important considerations that every teacher must take into

account. Classroom management must include not only effectively preparing your classroom as a

learning environment but also ways to keep your students actively engaged. It should also

include ways to deal with students’ behavior and ways to manage groups.

Philosophy of Classroom Management

Classroom management is my primary focus as teacher because students vary in

characteristics, cognitive abilities, culture, behavior, and socially. Students learn at different rates

and are sometimes motivated to learn through different means. Therefore it is imperative to have

a well-managed classroom to create an effective and efficient learning environment for all

students. I understand that managing your classroom is an ongoing process and should evolve in

order to deal with issues that may arise. However, the underlying tenets of classroom

management will involve setting up plans and procedures that will motivate my students to learn

while managing their work, behavior, and progress by constantly providing constructive

feedback.

Rules

The rules of the classroom will be made available to all students on the first day of class.

It will also be displayed in the classroom so it is visible upon entering the classroom. The rules

are clear and concise eliminating any ambiguity. The rules address the topics such as speaking in

the classroom. Students are to speak only at appropriate times using respectful language. They

must raise their hands to be recognized and respond to their classmates and me with positive

language. Students are to follow the directions that I provide to them and be prepared to do their

work upon cue. Students must also arrive to class on time and must have a late pass if they arrive

to class after the bell has rung. Finally, students must adhere to the procedures and routines that I

have provided in their syllabi so that class can flow smoothly and effectively. I will also make

my students aware of the negative and positive consequences of their behavior and actions in the

classroom.

Procedures & Routines

I will set up the classroom in a U-shaped formation for visibility and interaction

purposes. Students will be assigned seats which will minimize disruptions when students enter

the classroom. This will also provide structure and make it easier for me to begin my instruction.

When entering the classroom, students’ are to be lined up and quiet. I will enforce this

procedure by reminding students’ of my expectations during the first couple of weeks of class. I

will also greet each student at the door and instruct them to place all backpacks and other non-

essential items under their desks. Students who arrive late must have a valid late pass and if not

they will have a point deducted from their classroom participation grade. Students who are

consistently late regardless of a late pass will receive a formal warning and a call home to their

parent(s) or guardian(s).

Students will be allowed to go to the bathroom one at a time and must sign the bathroom

list which will be next to the front door. They must raise their hands before requesting the

bathroom pass and will be allowed only 3 passes for the semester. This also includes passes to

the nurse, main office, and water fountain. At the first and last 10 minutes of the class, students

will not be allowed to go to the bathroom because this can cause a negative disruption. Students

will be urged to use the bathroom prior to class as not to disturb the flow of the classroom.

During examinations and quizzes students will not be allowed to leave the classroom unless it is

a medical emergency or call from the main office.

Students must have all of the necessities with them in the classroom and should not be in

their lockers. This includes their notebooks, textbooks, writing utensils etc. If a student does not

have their requirements with them then they will have the option to “rent” these materials but

must sign their name so that I can keep track of the items.

Students who have missed the class are responsible for making up the work. This

includes in class assignments as well as homework. On the first day of class there will be a sign

up sheet with a “buddy system” where students must exchange an up to date contact method with

one classmate. This will allow students’ to assist one another outside of the classroom.

Group work is an important part of my science class and will involve use of technology.

When selecting groups I will do my best to use a fair practice. Therefore I will create groups

with students who are not seated next to each other so that all students have the opportunity to

correspond with each other. Students will be expected to work in a cooperative manner and be

respectful of each other’s opinions. I will provide an assessment sheet where students will

evaluate each other’s performance at the end of group work and will help me to evaluate

individual performances.

In the front of the classroom there will be an inbox or folder for completed assignments.

In class assignments and homework assignments will have different boxes and students must

turn in their work during the final 10 minutes of the class. Incomplete work will not be accepted

and students will have to complete their work before submitting it into the inbox. Incomplete

work will be graded on a different point scale system.

Implementation of Classroom Management Practices

My expectations of my students’ and how I want my class to run will be the driving force

for how my classroom is managed. In order for my class to run effectively and smoothly I must

ensure that my students’ behavior and classroom practices are guided by the procedures and

routines I created. I think of my classroom as a community of scholars who are intelligent

enough to formulate insightful thoughts and dialogue. I will be respectful of their opinions and

will allow them to voice their opinions in a respectful manner that will contribute to the learning

environment. I think that in order to achieve the type of classroom I envision I should also

involve students in certain processes. Therefore, I think it would be beneficial to have my

students discuss ways that they can follow the personal code of conduct set forth in the rules of

the classroom. This will ensure that students know what I expect of them as students. I will also

model the behavior that is expected of my students.

When it comes to enforcing rules I will make sure that the negative and positive

consequences of students’ behavior are strictly followed. I will implement these consequences

and ensure that each student understands all of the consequences and how they will apply to their

grades. I know that students often misbehave regardless of the rules and consequences however,

I hope that through my instruction my students’ are actively engaged.

Student Engagement

As a science teacher I plan to have a curriculum that is based on inquiry as well as

discovery. In order to keep my students actively engaged I will also implement technology and

hands on learning into the learning environment. For example, if I were to introduce a lesson on

cells I could integrate the use of the textbook, three dimensional models, and a computer

program to demonstrate cells functions, shape, and importance. This integration should be

reflected in my lesson plans which are a critical component of classroom management.

Understanding that my students are individual learners and may not all be at the same level of

comprehension will also be taken into account when I create lesson plans. For this reason, I will

constantly assess and track each student’s progress so that I can make any adjustments to my

instruction if necessary.

As mentioned earlier, I will keep in mind that classroom management plans may need to

change or be tweaked to maximize effectiveness. Therefore, I will have measures in place that

will be used to address any issues found in my classroom management plan. My classroom

management plan has preventive measures set in place but it is just as important to have

supportive measures. This is why I will reserve office hours for students who are having issues

that they may not want to discuss in front of the class. I will also have a tutoring session once a

week for students who are trying to keep up in class but are having trouble grasping concepts.

For students who are having trouble with their class work and/or behavior, I will be sure to have

active parental involvement. Parental involvement will be an important part of managing my

students’ behavior in the classroom. This will be achieved by both written and verbal

correspondences.

Conclusion

Education is definitely a collaborative effort and your classroom should be viewed as a

community. My classroom management plan details my philosophy, procedures and rules, and

expectations for my class. I will use my plan to guide me through the semester knowing that I

can make adjustments along the way. It is important that my students feel comfortable, engaged,

and focused in order to effectively manage my classroom. As a teacher, it is my responsibility to

create a classroom environment where my students can learn what is being taught while adhering

to the rules of my classroom. Once implemented my classroom management plan will be used as

a strategy that will give me control of my classroom while dealing with students’ behaviors and

learning.
