On behalf of the Utah Dental Association and our convention committee, I would like to welcome each of
you to our 2018 convention. We have planned this meeting to be engaging for each member of our dental
teams. Whether this is your first year at our meeting or you attend every year, I would like to invite each
of you to discover how unique of an experience the UDA convention can be.

“Can You Really Save That (and Why Would You?):”
Treatment Options for Carious Primary Teeth.

Are you totally confused on how to treat teeth
in children? Don’t they all fall out anyway? And
what about the kid they’re attached to? This seminar reviews local
anesthesia, pulp therapy, restorations and space maintenance in the
primary and early mixed dentitions allowing the practitioner to set
parameters for which teeth to save and restore.

longevity for which carious primary tooth to save and restore.

Dr. Rothman received his B.A. from SUNY at Buffalo, his D.D.S.
from NYU College of Dentistry and completed a Pediatric Dental
Residency at Children’s Hospital/Oakland and UCSF. He was
Director of the Pediatric Dentistry Residency program at UCSF and
Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University
of the Pacific School of Dentistry. He has been in full time private
practice in San Francisco since 1998 and is currently Clinical
Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University School
of Dental Medicine. He lectures nationally and internationally
to dental and medical groups in the areas of pediatric dentistry,
behavior management, sedation, anesthesia and hospital dentistry.
Good to Great: Mastering Adhesion and
Posterior Composites

There are key fundamental concepts that
will determine the long-term favorable outcome
of direct composite resin restorations. This course will provide a
current scientific update of adhesive systems and direct esthetic
materials with indications of which systems and composite materials
to utilize for specific cavity preparations. Evidenced-based step-by-
step protocols for preparation, placement and finishing techniques
to achieve precise margins, consistent contacts and eliminate
post-operative sensitivity will be demonstrated with the Dental
Microscope HD Video.

of Pennsylvania School of Dental Medicine and currently serves as
Clinical Professor in the Department of Preventive and Restorative
Sciences and the Department of Endodontics. He is Co-Director
of the Endodontic-Restorative Microscopy and Technology Clinic
teaching students’ precision restorative dentistry utilizing the dental
microscope and digital technologies. Dr. Atlas maintains a full
time private practice dedicated to Esthetic and Comprehensive
Restorative Dentistry located in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.

How Crown Lengthening WILL Enhance Your
Restorative Results

This course covers methods, limitations,
and benefits of both esthetic and functional
crown lengthening. You will leave with a better understanding of
these principles to be able to help patients enjoy better and more
predictable results.
These principles apply to both posterior and anterior teeth,
and both will be covered. Participants will see how crown margin
proximity to soft tissue can adversely impact their restorative results,
which in turn leads to better understanding of why tissues are red
and sore at times.
Discussion points include making diagnostic decisions
regarding crown lengthening from both radiographic and clinical
perspectives. It includes a detailed discussion of biologic width and
how that impacts restorative decisions, including how to improve
“gummy smile” issues.
Multiple case examples are shown from both radiographic and
clinical perspectives, starting with initial evaluation through the
surgery and final completion.

The Many Flavors of Pain in the Mouth and
Face

Many conditions cause pain in the dentist’s
domain: dental, joint, muscular, nerve, headache,
sinus, and psychological conditions. The overlap in
locations and symptoms can trick or frustrate the patient and dentist.
While a comprehensive knowledge of them is impractical for you, the
ability to recognize these groups when they present will help avoid
trouble. We will describe the distinguishing features of each category.
Examples from our clinic will be used to help you apply your knowledge.
Learning Objectives:
• Recognize an orofacial pain as dental, joint, muscular,
neurological, headache, or psychological in nature.
• Avoid inappropriate and often exacerbating treatment based
on misdiagnosis.
• Initiate appropriate and timely treatment or referral.
Dr Young earned his DDS from the University of California,
San Francisco. He completed a General Practice Residency with
the Department of Veterans’ Affairs in McClellan, California.
Subsequently, he earned his MSD in Orofacial Pain from the
University of Medicine and Dentistry, New Jersey (now Rutgers
University), and is board-certified with the American Board of
Orofacial Pain, as well as a fellow of the American Academy of
Orofacial Pain. He heads the University of the Pacific Orofacial
Pain (TMD and neuropathic pain) curriculum, patient care, and
research. He also heads UOPs evidence-based dentistry curriculum.
Advancements in Dental Laser Applications 2018

In this one-day course you will receive an
overview of the advantages of utilizing lasers in
different disciplines. The versatility of lasers in
both soft and hard tissue applications in operative
dentistry, pedodontics, endodontics, periodontics, prosthodontics,
cosmetic dentistry, orthodontics, oral surgery and implantology will
be discussed. Learn how to increase patient comfort during and after
dental treatment and how to manage patients with TMJ pain using
Low Level Laser Therapy (LLLT). The presentation will cover laser
basics to advanced applications.
The afternoon session will focus on laser applications in
periodontics from hygiene use for biostimulation and bacterial
reduction, minimally invasive periodontal surgery, to using the
laser to promote new attachment and bone regeneration. The
popular use and clinical benefits of the radial-firing periodontal
laser tip will be discussed.

Dr. William Chen graduated from Washington University School
of Dental Medicine and has been in private practice in Granite
City, Illinois for over 40 years. He is a Master of the World Clinical
Laser Institute and a Master of the Academy of Laser Dentistry. He
has lectured all over the United States, Canada and many foreign
countries. He has been a chief investigator for Biolase Technology,
Inc. Dr. Chen is the author of “The Clinical Applications of
the Er,Cr:YSGG Laser Systems (An Atlas) and has produced a
DVD “iPlus Clinical Procedures: Hard and Soft Tissue (Laser
Analgesia)”. He has also authored several published articles related
to dentistry and laser dentistry.

to increase in the United States so too will the
number of dental patients affected by the disease. This program

Dr. Jerry Brown is an alumnus of Tufts University School of
Dental Medicine and practiced clinical dentistry over 30 years in
Massachusetts and Florida. Dr. Brown is the first, and only dentist to
achieve Board Certification as a diabetes educator, and he practices
in that capacity at the University of South Florida’s department of
internal medicine. Recognizing the special oral, and medical health
considerations of his dental patients with diabetes Dr. Brown focused
on how to provide the best care for this segment of his patient
population. He serves on the advocacy committee of the American
Diabetes Association and has served on the community leadership
board for that organization. Dr. Brown is also a consultant for the

You’re either a new grad or a seasoned
professional who has kept up on trends in restorative and implant
dentistry but now there’s a kid sitting in the chair and all you
remember is Prevention 101 and those 15 hours of Ped Dent clinic
and lectures in dental school. You’re panicking. If you’re a staff
member the kids have usually been pushed your way for behavior
management and parent counseling. Time to learn what’s new in
the world of Pediatric Dentistry. Flash: brushing and flossing don’t
stop caries and if you think brushing after you eat is useful, you may
have to rethink that one! For years, we have spread myths that we
learned in dental school without truly analyzing the research and
the common sense of the things we do on a daily basis. We’ll be
evaluating evidence based research on the issues of caries, hygiene,
diet, risk assessment, prevention and a primer on how to manage the
family (it’s not just the child) for the initial evaluation and follow up
visits. We’ll also touch on the airway and sleep disordered breathing
and its effect on the developing dentition.

Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University
of the Pacific School of Dentistry. He has been in full time private
practice in San Francisco since 1998 and is currently Clinical
Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of
Dental Medicine. He lectures nationally and internationally to dental
and medical groups in the areas of pediatric dentistry, behavior

Minimally Invasive Antimicrobial Treatment for
Basic to Advanced Periodontal Disease

sound, and evidence based, approach for effective
control of all levels of periodontal disease using a
non-surgical approach with scaling and root planning, or minimally
invasive surgical intervention for more advanced disease. Learn how
adding chemotherapeutic methods to specifically target periodontal
bacteria will allow for successful management of everything from
very advanced cases that might otherwise have been treated only
with extraction, to infected cases you might traditionally treat with
non-surgical methods. In doing so, results will be improved over
classic surgical or SCRP methods which may not kill all bacteria at
the diseased sites. These innovative methods will be explained by
outlining both in-office procedures, as well as specific anti-microbial
procedures for the patient to do at home. When combined, they yield
predictable clinical results for previously failing cases as well as
those being treated for the first time.

cure, typically lasts a lifetime. Management
options can reduce the pain to varying degrees case-by-case, but
delayed or incorrect diagnosis can worsen the response to treatment.
Some new management options, such as gels and supplements, are
becoming key players in this developing field. Dentists now play a
key role in preventing, detecting, treating, and referring them.

claims process. Insurance plan documents will be
discussed. CDT procedure codes will be looked at. We will discuss
who is looking at your claims and why your claims are denied. There
will be examples of what the dental consultant sees on claims and

addressed. The analytics that are available to insurance companies to
help them adjudicate claims will be discussed. The goal of the course
will be to help you get your claims paid in a timely manner and take
the stress out of dealing with the insurance companies.

Monday mornings and the weekend emergencies that follow? Have
you gone into the office on a weekend morning for an emergency
call only to find the emergency was an exfoliating tooth? Does
your front staff respond appropriately to real dental emergencies
by screening fully and communicating to the back? Do you realize
that technology can help? This lecture reviews the most common
dental emergencies in children and their treatment including rapid
neurological assessment, treatment and follow-up protocols. We will
go through the process from the initial phone call screening through
scheduling and treatment helping your office seamlessly include
emergencies in the daily routine.
Learning Objectives:
• Develop a protocol for screening and triaging emergencies.
• Review the current protocols for treating dental fractures
and traumatized teeth.
• Learn to treat and identify concurrent soft tissue injuries.

Dr. Rothman received his B.A. from SUNY at Buffalo, his D.D.S.
from NYU College of Dentistry and completed a Pediatric Dental
Residency at Children’s Hospital/Oakland and UCSF. He was
Director of the Pediatric Dentistry Residency program at UCSF and
Chair of the Department of Pediatric Dentistry at the University
of the Pacific School of Dentistry. He has been in full time private
practice in San Francisco since 1998 and is currently Clinical
Associate Professor at Case Western Reserve University School of
Dental Medicine. He lectures nationally and internationally to dental
and medical groups in the areas of pediatric dentistry, behavior
management, sedation, anesthesia and hospital dentistry.

is a beta tester for a major implant dental company and has been
involved with designing implants and components. He has published
numerous papers on implant dentistry and digital communication.
He is a director at the Seattle Study Club in Atlantic Canada. He
has a dental YouTube site with over 2.7 million views. He is a key

Preservation and Restoration of Tooth Structure

The course will focus on preserving the
structure of individual teeth while restoring
defects in tooth structure. The physical and
chemical nature of enamel and dentin relative to their surrounding
environment; the biology and biophysics of dentin and pulp; the
behavioral, microbial, chemical and physical challenges to tooth
structure; and the physical/chemical properties of materials now
available to aid in disease prevention and tooth restoration will be
discussed.
Learning Objectives:
• The evolutionary biology of human teeth.
• The nature of dental caries; how individuals can never
experience the disease.
• Overcome the unique challenges to tooth structure by the
carious process in the very young and in the elderly.
• Corrosion, acid-accelerated tooth wear, and cervical
hypersensibility; their etiology, epidemiology, prevention,
treatment and cure.
• The principal causes of tooth fracture; prevention and
treatment.
• Pulpal responses to caries, tooth restoration and other forms
of insult; interventions to prevent and treat such responses.
• Which dental materials are now most appropriate for the
restoration of structural defects of different origins, of
different size and at different sites.
• Why some restorations fail more quickly than others
because of the continuation of the carious process, and what
can best be done about it.
Dr. Hume is the dean of the University of Utah School of
Dentistry, and the associate vice president for Academic Affairs and

Education for University of Utah Health. Before coming to Utah he
spent the last forty years in an academic career that included the
chair of Restorative Dentistry at UCSF, dean of three dental schools,
vice president for health affairs and provost for the University of
California System of universities and laboratories. Dr. Hume holds
two research doctorates, in Human Physiology/Pharmacology and
Dental Science. Much of his research involves the beneficial and
adverse effects of restorative dental materials. He is an editor and
co-author of multiple chapters in the textbook, “Preservation and
Restoration of Tooth Structure.” He is a Fellow of the Academy of

Using digital impressions and 3D
radiography, case planning is now more
predictable. Using new software and CAD/CAM options we
can look at the workflow from the first visit examination, case
planning, material decisions, and either dental lab coordination or
in-office fabrication. We will take a close look at the current digital
impression systems and a few on their way into our profession.
Learn some basics about conebeam and explore some of the new
materials we can use with these digital impressions including milling
and 3D printing.

Emergency patients often arrive at the
dental practice in pain with a fear of potential
treatment procedures. However, technological advancements in
clinical endodontics have vastly improved the quality of the root
canal experience and the ability to alleviate dental pain. Whether a
tooth has decay, a hairline or crown fracture, traumatic injury, or an
abscess, the clinician’s ability to confidently diagnose and precisely
treat the cause of pain will put patients at ease. This course will give
you the tools to accurately assess the source of a patient’s perceived
pain whether pulpal, neurologic, medical, or neoplastic and how to
efficiently treat the problem.
Learning Objectives:
• Understand patients’ symptoms and be able to diagnose the
source of dental pain.
• Differentiate between types of traumatic injury and
treatment modalities to achieve predictable outcomes.
• The ability to definitively treat the unannounced dental
emergency and know when and which medications to

Dr. Ralan Wong graduated with honors from the University of
the Pacific College in 1989 and UOP School of Dentistry in 1992.
He completed his graduate training in endodontics at the University

Dr. Wong is a Fellow of the Pierre Fauchard Academy,

Providing dental care to anxious and fearful patients continues
to be a major challenge facing dentists. Despite advances in
management techniques and treatment delivery, patients’ preexisting
opinions and experiences contribute to dental anxiety and fear.
Feelings of apprehension create psychological obstacles that
prevent dental patients from seeking and receiving care. Of the
current techniques to facilitate coping or to minimize procedure
apprehension, in-office enteral, inhalation or conscious sedation has
garnered the most attention. This dynamic lecture will cover both
the science and art of oral conscious sedation in an interactive and
engaging multimedia presentation. The pharmacological basis of
therapeutics, treatment strategies and protocols will all be discussed
in a comprehensive, case-based approach.

HPV (human papillomavirus) is a common virus, with 25% of
Americans currently infected. In most instances there are no
symptoms or necessary treatment, but HPV does cause almost
39,000 cancer cases per year, and about 11,000 of those are
oral cancers. The HPV vaccine can prevent more than 29,000
HPV related cancers occurring each year in the U.S. Dental

and parents about HPV and promoting the prevention of HPV

Ron Bowen DDS

Dr. Bowen is a committed practitioner, educator, leader, and advocate of dentistry. Ron graduated
with honors from the University of the Pacific Dental School in San Francisco, California. While
there, he served as student body and junior class president. He is a practicing dentist with an
established practice in the Salt Lake Valley since 1984. In addition to his private practice, Dr. Bowen
is an Adjunct Professor at the Roseman College of Dental Medicine. He currently serves on the Utah
DOPL Dental Advisory Board, as an examiner for the Western Regional Board, and the CDCD. Ron
has consulted with PIE as an expert witness for many years.
Dr. Bowen has long been dedicated to serving the dental community on a local and national level.
He has served as the President of the Utah Dental Association and the UDA Board of Directors,
where has chaired the Government and Political Action Committees and advocated on behalf of the profession to improve the
dental profession and the quality of care provided to patients. He served as a Delegate to the American Dental Association.
He was appointed to the ADA Government Affairs Council and the House of Delegates Reference Committee on Government
Affairs. He was inducted into the International College of Dentists in 2003 and was a member of the Pierre Fauchard Society.
He is currently section chair of the American College of Dentists. Ron feels like his greatest service has been at the Utah State
Prison as a volunteer in the addiction recovery unit for the past 10 years.
Dr. Bowen is married to Melanie Hamilton Bowen and they are the parents of two daughters, Elysa Dishman (Lake) and
Lindsey Williams (Jared) and he has five grandchildren. In his spare time, Dr. Bowen enjoys traveling extensively, and is an
avid fly fisherman.

James Williamson, DMD

Dr. Williamson grew up in Salt Lake City where he graduated from the University of Utah. He
received his dental degree from Oregon Health Sciences University in 1989. After graduation
he moved back to Utah where he has been in private practice for almost 30 years in the Murray/
Holladay area. Because of his love of education and teaching, he serves on faculty at the University
of Utah Hospital as an attending in the GPR program as well as an attending in the School of
Dentistry. As a life-long supporter of organized dentistry, he has served the Salt Lake District Dental
Society as a board member and president, the Utah Dental Association as a board member and
president, and the ADA as a delegate and member of the Council on Dental Practice.
One of Dr. Williamson’s greatest passions has been providing care for underprivileged children. He was invited by the Utah
Dental Association to spearhead the ‘Give Kids A Smile’ program while serving in the Salt Lake district. He was amazed at the
incredible response from the dental community in this state. Their generosity and willingness to serve this population in need
was both inspiring and humbling making him proud to be a member of this dental community and to rub shoulders with such
compassionate colleagues. He has been continuously involved with ‘Give Kids a Smile’ ever since. The success of the program
is the direct result of combined efforts by organized dentistry and the dentists, hygienists, assistants and volunteers of the state.
Dr. Williamson has been married to the love of his life for 37 years. He and Trudy have three children and two grand dogs.
Trudy has also been a constant supporter of organized dentistry. She has been a member of the Alliance and worked tirelessly
for the ‘Give Kids A Smile’ program.
