Material Submittal for Ice Chiller

1. Original Specified Chiller
Specification Schedule, D15, rev. 05, gives the Type of Chiller as,” Multistack modular
chiller (4 modules operating, 1 module redundant) and Model reference; 2 no.
Modules:- MS70X6H2W1-R410A and 3 no. Modules:- MS50X6H2W1-R410A..
Refrigerant is R410A, which is a blend of R32 and R125.
Cooling Capacity=450kW, Chilled Water flow & return at -5/-1.8°C
The design of this Chiller, of modular configuration would permit each module to be
transported via a standard lift capable of carrying 1,000kg
2. Proposed Chiller

The Proposed Chiller is a Trane chillers’, model R TWD Series R™ 70-250 Ton Water
Cooled Chiller, with Dual –Circuit compressors, using R134a refrigerant. The chiller
comprises of 2no. Helical rotary compressors each rated at 50% of total capacity, with
complete dual operation facility to permit operation of each circuit independently,
providing a 50% duty/ standby facility for each chiller.
Refrigerant is R134a, which is a pure, non-blended HFC refrigerant.
Cooling Capacity (max) =476kW ,Chilled Water flow & return at -5/-1.8°C.
For initial installation the Chiller will be transferred from Basement B1 to B2 via the
access opening in the generator room and then via the West riser shaft to Basement
B3 and the final location.
TRANE chillers also are compatible with both LonTalk and BACnet open protocols.
An outline proposal has been included in this document to demonstrate that the largest
and heaviest replacement components [condenser and evaporator shells] can be
transported from Basement B3 via goods lift GL1 to the loading bay on Basement level
B1.
3. Operation of Chiller

The purpose of this Chiller is to produce the Ice storage in the Baltimore Air Coil [BAC]
TSU-M internal Melt application equipment.
This ice storage will be maintained for chilled water standby function in the event of
failure of the District cooling system. The ice chiller is not intended to provide primary
cooling supply for the building and therefore is not a prime requirement to have
standby facility, although both the specified and the proposed chillers have inherent
standby capacity.

2. Proposed Chiller

The Proposed Heat Pump is comprised of 2no.Trane chillers’, model R TWD Series
R™ 70-250 Ton Water Cooled Chiller, with Dual –Circuit compressors, using R134a
refrigerant, operated as a pair in sequence. The chillers each use 2no. Helical rotary

3. Operation of Heat Pump

The purpose of this heat pump is to produce the Low Temperature Hot Water (LTHW)
for warm air heating and domestic- hot- water pre-heating via pre-heat storage
vessels.
This Heat Pump will be controlled to provide a constant flow temperature from the
Chillers condensers at 40°C, with a constant water flow through the condensers.
The chillers/ heat-pumps are capable of operating effectively on part-load conditions
and will run to maintain loads between 100% and 25% load for each chiller (total heat
loads between 100% and 12.5%).
The heat pump chillers will also provide a standby capacity of 25% over the specified
heating duty as each chiller is capable of operating as 2 separate units, with each unit
having up to a maximum rating at 33% (600kW) of the total design heat load.

Chillers Replacement Strategy

[Proposed by HASTIE]

A narrative and schematic description of chillers replacement proposed strategy is

attached.
OUTLINE PROPOSAL FOR COMPLIANCE WITH BURO HAPPOLD PLANT
REPLACEMENT STRATEGY FOR CHILLERS
The purpose of this document is to demonstrate compliance with the Buro Happold Plant
Replacement Strategy document [Rev00 Dec 2010] for replacement of chiller components for the
proposed Trane RTWD200 chiller which has been submitted for approval for both the Ice Chiller and
the LTHW Heat Pumps.  The following information contains schedules of replacement items and their
dimensions / weights to verify the fact that the largest component [typically the condenser /
evaporator shell and tube assemblies] will be transferable along the specified route from level B3,

There are 3 posible options for the replacement of the condenser or evaporator coils as follows:

Option A is explored in some detail in this document and considers the 'worst case' scenario for

Option B is the same as option A but with the inlet/outlet end cap removed from the Condenser to
reduce the overall length by approx 150mm.

Option C is the replacement of the condenser or evaporator coils only by replacing the 15mm
refrigerant tubes on‐by‐one.  This method is standard practice for TRANE and has the advantage of
only needing to bring the lengths of copper tube [less than 3000mm] to Basement level B3.
Physical Data for the TRANE RTWD‐200 model Chiller
The information below is a schedule of replacement items for Trane RTWD200 chiller and their
corresponding dimensions and weights.  The schedule confirms that all replacement items will fit
within the lift car dimensions.  The largest items are the condenser and evaoprator shells and tube
assemblies.  With reference to the following sketches and models it has been demonstrated that
these can be transported through route identified in the corresponding marked up plans for
Basement levels B1 and B3.

 CHILLER REPLACEMENT STRATEGY
The information below for the equivalent Carrier chiller serves to demonstrate the fact that the Carrier
condenser shell and tube assembly is at least 300mm longer than the Trane condenser and is therefore highly
unlikely to fit within the lift car dimensions.  This has therefore led to our submission for the Trane model.
