Closing the Water System

v.12 Mar 2018

Closing the Water System

Full Instructions

Quick and Easy – You can close the “lower” system and keep the “upper” pressurized
for water on your final night…getting a head start on the last day.

Tools & Supplies Required:

1. Master Wrench & H2O Drain Pan (see Photo 0.1)

2. Rags to clean up drips and puddles
3. Perforated end caps (see Photo 2.3)
4. Baggies & rubber bands
5. Hose storage bucket (see Photo 2.5)

Photo 0.1 – Master Wrench and H20 Drain Pan

The Day Before You Leave – Steps 1 – 3

Step 1 - Fill tank on pump motor with gas and put a couple of squirts of Stabile
Step 1 in the tank. Pump the pressure up to 40lbs and, in doing so, get Stabile into the
carburetor – good for winter storage; helps prevent gas from going bad and gunking-up
the carb.

Step 2 - Go into the BH and turn OFF the blue ball valve at the tank. Photo 2.0
Step 2 shows valve in “open” position. Turn the valve 90 degrees to close it – handle will stop
in fully closed position. Once done, go to the pump.

Photo 2.0 – Blue ball valve (in open position)

When not in use, place these directions onto the clipboard (with the opening instructions) and 1
put clipboard back on the wall by the pressure tank in Boat House.

Step 2.a – Empty the water from the pump chamber into the H20 Drain Pan. Drain plug, shown in
Photo 2.1, requires no tools to remove. Once water has drained, replace drain plug by hand. Be careful
not to cross thread plug when reinstalling. Hand tighten – no tools!

Black hose at “OUT”

port

Step 2.b – Disconnect black hose from pump’s “OUT” port (See Photo 2.2). Use the Master Wrench
on this, and leave the grey plastic fitting on the pump. Expect water to spill from this hose, so have the
Drain Pan and a rag or two to mop up a little mess. Put a perforated end cap (See Photo 2.3) on the end
of the grey fitting.

Step 2.c - Now go to the other end of the hose you just disconnected from the pump and, with
the Master Wrench, disconnect the green hose from the blue ball valve. (See Photo 2.4). Keep the
blue valve attached to tank and in the closed position. You’ll have some more water spill from this hose,
so try to pour into the Drain Pan and expect to do just a bit of mopping. Remove water from hose (freeze
hazard!) by keeping green end low and the black end raised (due to check valve) and shake! Put baggies
on both ends and coil into hose storage bucket (see photo 2.5). Put a perforated end cap on the blue ball
valve. Keep valve closed for now.

Hose Storage Bucket

(labeled).

Photo 2.5 – Hose Storage Bucket

Step 3 Step 3 - Disconnect ribbed hose from pump “IN” port. No tools required. Pull
rubber gasket from the end of the ribbed hose and place in the baggie on the wall
behind pump labeled “1-INCH RUBBER WASHERS – PUMP INTAKE HOSE.” Put a
baggie over the end of the ribbed hose, secure with rubber band and feed out of BH through the service
door. It may take a little finesse, but it went in there in the beginning of the year so keep after it –
gently. Put the special white cap on the pump “IN” port (see Photos 3.0 and 3.0.a).

Photo 3.0 Photo 3.0.a

Step 3.a - Continue to feed ribbed hose out of Utility Box One, through PVC and out to the crib
walkway. The ears on the black clamp can get caught while pulling through the pipe so use care not to
damage.

Step 3.b – Now you should pull the intake assembly from the lake. First, take baggie off pump end
of hose and gently pull on the ribbed hose. Rash, abrupt or otherwise intolerant tugs could result in
pulling in an empty line, ie no assembly attached. To avoid a brisk swim, retrieve intake assembly slowly.
Now that everything is ashore, place the intake assembly on the crib walkway and begin coiling the hose,
removing all water from the hose as you go (freeze hazard!). Then place a bag over intake assembly and
replace baggie on pump end and put into green garbage can labeled “Water System Storage.” Leave some
space because the other hoses from the system will need to fit.

Step 3.c – Go back to the Utility Box and fetch the 4 inch PVC pipe cap. Place 4 inch cap on pipe
end, as seen in Photo 3.1.

When not in use, place these directions onto the clipboard (with the opening instructions) and 3
put clipboard back on the wall by the pressure tank in Boat House.

Photo 3.1 – Once hose is out, place cap on end.

The Final Day – Steps 4 - 9

Tools & Supplies Required: Same as Steps 1-3.

Step 4 Step 4 - Start draining the system by opening BOTH faucet handles in the
kitchen. Make sure the plug is still in the sink’s p-trap or else you’ll have a river
running through the kitchen. Then go open the hygiene hydrant spigot to help the
drainage process. Once most of the water has drained, go to Step 4.a.

Step 4.a – Open the lid on the box closest to the Hygiene Hydrant and close the valve, as shown
in Photo 4.0.

Here you can see the

valve in the “closed”
position.

Photo 4.0 – Hygiene Hydrant Box

Remove hygiene hydrant hose from the spigot on the tree – you’ll need the Master Wrench. Now,
disconnect the other end of the hygiene hose from the red ball valve in the box. Put a perforated end cap
onto the end of the ball valve. Slowly open the valve in order to continue the draining. Leave open.

Coil the hose making a point to remove all water – winter freeze hazard! Once done, put a baggie on
each end of the hose, secure with rubber bands and place in storage bucket

When not in use, place these directions onto the clipboard (with the opening instructions) and 4
put clipboard back on the wall by the pressure tank in Boat House.

v.12 Mar 2018

Step 5 Step 5 – Go to Utility Box One and open the red ball valve (see Photo 5.0) to drain
the last of the water from the tank.

Red ball valve happens to be in

“closed” position in this photo.
Turn 90 degrees to open (will only
turn one way).

Photo 5.0 – Utility Box One with red valve that will drain last of H2O from tank

Step 6 Step 6 – Once the water has stopped draining from the tank (you’ll hear a loud
gurgling when last of water leaves) use the Master Wrench to disconnect black hose
from red ball valve, install a perforated end cap on the ball valve and feed the black
hose out of the box.

Step 6.a – At the Hygiene Hydrant Box, disconnect the hose coming down from the cabin from the
brass tee (See Photo 6.0). Place a baggie over the female end of the hose, and put a perforated cap onto
the brass tee.

Disconnect hose coming from cabin.

Baggie the hose end and put a cap on the
brass tee.

Photo 6.0 – Hygiene Hydrant Box

Step 6.b – Pull the black hose out of the Hygiene Hydrant Box (the long one that was connecting
both boxes). Since it still has the ball valve and tee connected to it, it can only come out of the box one
way! Leaving the valve and tee attached, coil it, removing all water in the process, and put a baggie on
the female end. The ball valve end should have perforated end caps on each end. Place hose in storage
bucket.

Step 6.c - Put baggies on the outside of each of the two 2-inch PVC pipes and press the green
cover onto the Hygiene Hydrant box for winter.

Step 7 – Put H20 Drain Pan under red ball valve at tank (See Photo 7.0) and
Step 7 disconnect green hose with Master Wrench. Not much, if any, water should come
from tank. Place a baggie on the end and feed out of BH. Close the little grey service
door so mice can’t get in. Make sure all water is drained from this hose and place in
storage can.

When not in use, place these directions onto the clipboard (with the opening instructions) and 5
put clipboard back on the wall by the pressure tank in Boat House.

Time to disconnect this hose

from the red ball valve.

Photo 7.0 - Once water has drained, disconnect

green hose from red valve at tank, above.

Step 7.a - Open blue valve at tank (Seen in photo 7.0) and put a perforated end cap on it. Clean up
any spilled water around the tank/pump.

Step 7.b - From Utility Box One, take small green hose and coil into storage bucket (making sure
all water has been removed). Place second 4-inch end cap on the short stretch of PVC outside of the box
(so rodents don’t come into box during winter). Place a baggie on the outside of the 2-inch pipe and press
the green top cover into place. Put the storage bucket back in the boathouse where it was at the
beginning of the season (see Photo 2.5).

Step 8 Step 8 – Run up to cabin with Master Wrench, one perforated end cap and a
baggie/rubber band. Outside of the cabin, at ground level beneath the kitchen
window (west/southwest side) disconnect the grey hose from the copper supply line.
Put the perforated end cap onto the copper line, and baggie the end of the grey hose.

Step 8 - Connection
for copper line and
grey garden hose

Step 9 – Now, go into the cabin and remove the plug in the p-trap (under the sink, see
Step 9 Photo 9) so water can escape the elbow (freeze hazard!). Empty the pan of water and
leave the trap plug in the pan beneath the sink.

Step 9.a - LEAVE BOTH FAUCET HANDLES OPEN FOR WINTER (See Photo 9.a) You
opened them both in Step 4 so you can just go to the next step!

When not in use, place these directions onto the clipboard (with the opening instructions) and 6
put clipboard back on the wall by the pressure tank in Boat House.

Step 10 – Now, take the Master Wrench back down to the boathouse and put back on
Step 10 wall where it lives (See photo 0.2). If black drain pan is still on the floor go ahead and
put it on wall underneath Master Wrench.

Now that pump motor has cooled overnight, place a clean porous cloth (no plastic!) over
it to keep clean of dust and out of sight for winter.

Finally, place these directions back onto the clipboard (with the opening instructions) and put
clipboard back on the wall by the pressure tank.
