Design Assignment #1

Design Issues for “Fun in the Sun!” Flyer

1. Proximity Issues
! All items appear to be grouped together even though certain
portions are spaced apart due to the same font and color
throughout.
! Appears to be one continuous message and there is no area
that sticks out as a focal point.

Proximity Solutions
! Create one main focal point and only place like items (e.g.,
text or graphics) in close proximity.
! Focus on “Fun in the Sun!” and how to contact someone
about the program.

2. Alignment Issues
! Per the Williams text, the centers edges look “soft.”
! Centered text is often considered boring or less professional
per the Williams text.

Alignment Solutions
! Align flush right or left instead
! If center alignment is still used, consider using color and
graphics to make it look more interesting and professional.

3. Repetition Issues
! There is no purposeful repetition here.
! The same old boring font and centered text is used
throughout the flyer, but there is no meaningful trend.

Repetition Solutions
! Use color and graphics and create a theme.
! For instance, suns were used as a repeated graphic in one of
my flyers.

4. Contrast Issues
! There is absolutely no visual contrast present in this flyer,
making it hard to grab the attention of the reader.

Contrast Solutions
! Use of color and decorative fonts can create a feeling of
contrast here.

Flyer 1 (Younger Children’s Theme)

This flyer was designed in PowerPoint with the focus on attracting

children to the flyer. I used a white background with blue, pink, purple,
and green, which appear to be popular in many children’s flyers that I
saw online. The white background and blue borders create some
contrast. Most of the text is left-aligned to give the flyer a cleaner look. I
used interesting child-like fonts to make it more appealing to children.
Since the enrichment program seems to blend the outdoors and learning,
I included pictures of children playing and reading. “Fun in the Sun!”
and the contact information for Sue are the elements that I tried to make
stand out. I attempted to group like items together. For instance, the
main program highlights are grouped together with suns as bullets. The
sun graphic is repeated throughout the document as well as the same
color scheme.

Flyer 2 (Ice Pop Theme)

This flyer was created in Canva, an online design software that I often
use for flyers at work. While there are templates in Canva, the user must
still manipulate the elements to fit their own project. Colors, text, and
graphics in the templates are all able to be adjusted. This second flyer
was designed more with the preteen in mind. The ice pop and “Fun in the
Sun!” are centered and meant to be a focal point. This is a more busy
theme, but I attempted to create it meaningfully. There is repetition in
the color scheme- yellow, black, white, and pink on a light blue
background. There are graphic elements throughout that follow that
same color scheme. There is contrast in the script font and the other
decorative fonts.
