MODULE DESCRIPTION

Geotechnical Engineering II helps to further understand soil mechanics. The module

Introduction is designed in a way to enhance the knowledge of soil for its shear strength,
deformation due to drainage of water and and concepts of ultimate soil bearing
capacity.
At the end of the module student will be able to:
Learning
Outcomes LO1. Understand the stress analysis of soils under applied loading, the mode of
shear failure in soil and internal resistance (strength) the soil mass can offer to
sustain failure.

LO2. Understand the concepts of estimation of ultimate soil-bearing capacity using

both laboratory and in-situ test results.

LO3. Understand the concepts of ground water flow using flow nets.

LO4. Evaluate the concepts of consolidation of soil under applied loads

Assessment Assessment activities:
Criteria  Tutorial quizzes and laboratory practical work will carry 20% of the total
marks.
 Mid semester exam will carry 15% of the total marks. The mid semester
exam may be conducted at the completion of 7th week of classes.
 End of semester final examination is for 65% total marks.
 Midterm Examination 15% LO1, LO2
 Quizzes and laboratory practicals 20% LO1 – LO4
 Final Examination 65% LO1-LO4

Generic Information

Any type of plagiarism is not allowed.

Plagiarism: Academic honesty is crucial to a student’s credibility and self-esteem, and

ultimately reflects the values and morals of the Institute as whole. A student may
work together with one or a group of students discussing assignment content,
identifying relevant references, and debating issues relevant to the subject. Plagiarism
occurs when the work of another person, or persons, is used and presented as one’s
own.
