According to “Nanjing, China”, writers

Zeng Zungu and Ping-chia Kuo posted a
lot of introduction about Nanjing on the
website of ENCYCLOPÆDIA BRITANNICA.
Nanjing has a history of nearly 2500 years
and is well known as the capital of six
dynasties, or ten regimes, whose
landscape incorporates mountains, water,
city and forestry. Nanjing successfully won
the bid for the Youth Olympic Game on

organized by the International Olympic
Committee. It not only represents the rapid
development of economy and technology
The post and certain symbols was selected from in Nanjing, but also means that Nanjing is

famous city all around the world. As the
picture shows, Olympic rings are surrounded by the colorful “Nanjing”, which is plain but still
represents teenagers’ youth and vitality.

For responding to the government’s call enthusiastically. I, as an energetic high-school

student, applied for the volunteer position after watching the advertisement designed by
government. The advertisement not only promotes youth athletes to participate in sporting
events, but also it shows that the government needs a lot of volunteers to provide guests and
athletes with different services. Hence, in my mind, every teenager in Nanjing should take
responsibility to contribute to the Youth Olympic Games all around the world. Three weeks
later, when I accepted the offer that “You are qualified to be one of the volunteers”, I was very
excited because I had the chance to join the Youth Olympic Games- the ‘biggest party’ of
teenagers.
Training started one week after
getting the notification. My
instructor was a 30 years old male
called Ming Lee who mainly took
responsibility to train male students.
In the following 5 days, while most
girls learnt how to be “ Miss
Etiqqute”, male students needed to
learn a variety of basic skills-
following the syllubus given by
Mr.Lee. For example, the simulation
of dialogue, which was mainly
divided into two parts- memorzing
special English words and imitating
specific body languages. I am a

means I had to pay more time
practicing compared to other people. For improving effeciency of memorizing words, I got
up at 6a.m. everyday during summer holiday. Listening to MP3 and recording, I tried to
memorize every word specifically and speak them exactly correct.

For avioding pudency during the communication, I still did futher self-chanllenges. For
instance, “talking to the mirror” half an hour per day not only helped me to avoid bashfulness
and largely improved my speaking. For further practicing of my communication skills, I tried
to do body language carefully including smiling and hand position. My parents also provided
me with help of “playing audience” if I wanted. These processes cost me too much time, and
they were super conflcit bettween my volunteer’s dream and my shyness and memorization.
I was convinced of the hardship for being a qualified Olympic Game’s teenager or
representative of a country’s image. Gradually, my communication skill impoved a lot from
hard training. However, from my perspective, I was much more proud that I could be a
qualified volunteer than the any skills that I could get. Also, I am grateful that this experience
largely changed me.

What is more, first-aid treatment is another important subject we needed to study, which
guaranteed that we can provide effective help for emergency medical treatment. When I
recalled the experience of first-aid training, I definitely believed that my patience was fostered
during this process. For first-aid treatment, accuracy and circumspection are the most
important. However, I was a person who likes doing things fast; Hence, sometimes I was
lacking of patience and ignored tiny details, which was one of my shortcomings. If I wanted
to be a professional volunteer, it was important for me to do everything carefully during work
especially the process of first-aid treatments. Unconsciously, the date of the final exam was
coming. Placed in order, accuracy and efficiency are most important for passing the final exam
of first-aid treatment. After taking a deep breath, I started the exam. Every step I did was
followed by the instructions from my brain which copied exactly from the previous training
experience and instructional textbook. Calling phones, checking body situation, doing
cardiopulmonary resuscitation, my perfect performance got praise from my partners and
coach. As a careless person who even sometimes could not distinguish of number ‘6’ from
‘9’ before, this was undoubtedly a great success.

Passing the final exams of first-aid treatment meant we would be distributed into different
places to do different work, and my job included three main parts: guiding people to correct
exits in the subway station according to their demands, helping workers to check the security
of items that passengers carried and helping some special groups of people like the elderly
or disabled people to buy tickets. Actually, these jobs continuously challenged my patience
and communication abilities again even after the process of training.

As usual, I stood before the service desk at 7.a.m. in the railway-station. “Hey Mr. volunteer,”
a fluent English-speaking person made me turn around, and there was a foreign couple with
two children standing behind them. I replied immediately
“What’s up! How can I help you?”
He said “Well, we went to the one wrong exit, but how can we go to Exit N0.4?’
“Sure, according to our polices,
you should but a ticket again if
you want to go to Exit N0.4
because you should come in
firstly…”
“what, you mean we need to buy
tickets again, that’s absurd,” the
man interrupted my words at
once.
This situation was not introduced
in any instruction before, and I
got very confused at that time.
What should I do? What should I
say? Should I ask for help from

to make me calm down. Also, I
convinced myself that this was chance to test my communicational skills; If I could not come
up with appropriate ways to solve the problem, it meant my training is not enough. I hoped
to overcome this hard situation because it could show that my communication skills had
achieved a higher level. After considering a few seconds, I decided to relieve the conflictions
between us firstly.
“Fine, sir, I am sorry that it is a policy made by the railway station, but I think it is the first time
for you to come here, so you would be not familiar with our rules; I understand your problem
totally.”
Then I tried to get a solution to the conflict. “Please wait for a moment and I will discuss with
my team leader, is that ok?”
After getting the guest’s agreements, I ran back to the service desk and explained clearly
about the situation to my team leader. My leader considered the problem in one second, and
he thought we should show our kindness and commanded me to accompany them to the
fast track. He also emphasized that our job is to satisfy every guest.’ I realized the importance
of my job at this moment, and it was important for me deal with the case well. I ran back to
these guests after getting my leader’s permission and explained our decisions patiently and
clearly to my foreign friends. I expressed my leader’s thoughts in a much more sincere and
enthusiastic way. I also used body language like bowing to express our empathy to their
situation- I was confident on doing that because I practiced a lot before. They were very
satisfied with our reply and gave praise to me, “Thank you very much man, I will be very
careful next time.” This special experience trained me to be calm when faced with any
emergency situations. It was very important that I could use some way that I studied before
to solve the conflict correctly and efficiently.

The whole Youth Olympic Games lasted for three weeks. Although I did not work in the
stadiums, I was still proud that I made some tiny contributions to the Youth Olympic Games.
The experience I got did not end as the Olympic fire was extinguished. The things I learnt will
benefit me along my life. Communicational skills will be good for building my social life. Doing
things carefully will make me reliable and believable. Absolutely, I cannot accurately count
how many things I got during the Nanjing Youth Olympic Games, and It was an unforgettable
experience in my life.
