Aptitude Solved Problems

(L.C.M and H.C.F of Numbers)

LCM and HCF tricks, problems and formulas :

LCM is Least Common Multiple is a number which is multiple of two or more than
two numbers.

For example:

• The common multiples of 3 and 4 are 12, 24 and so on.

• Highest Common Factor (H.C.F.) or Greatest Common Divisor (G.C.D.) or

Greatest Common Measure (G.C.M.) are synonymous terms.

• The H.C.F of two or more than two numbers is the greatest numbers which
divides each of them without any remainder.

Some Important l.c.m. and h.c.f. tricks:

➢ Product of two numbers = Their h.c.f. * Their l.c.m.

➢ H.c.f. of given numbers always divides their l.c.m.

➢ LCM of given fractions = l.c.m. of numerator / h.c.f. of denominator

➢ HCF of given fractions = h.c.f. of numerator / l.c.m. of denominator

➢ If p is prime and a, b are any integer then P / ab, This implies P/a or P/b

➢ If d is the h.c.f. of two positive integer a and b, then there exist unique integer
m and n, such that d = am + bn

Prime Number :

A prime number is a natural number greater than 1 that has no positive divisors other
than 1 and itself.

For example :

2, 3, 5, 7, 11, 13, etc. are prime numbers.

1
Co-Prime Number :

Two numbers are said to be relatively prime, mutually prime, or co-prime to each
other when they have no common factor or the only common positive factor of the two
numbers is 1.

In other words, two numbers are said to be co-primes if their H.C.F. is 1.

Factors :

The numbers are said to be factors of a given number when they exactly divide that
number. Thus, factors of 18 are 1, 2, 3, 6, 9 and 18.

Common Factors :

A common factor of two or more numbers is a number which divides each of them
exactly.

Thus, each of the numbers 2, 4 and 8 is a common factor of 8 and 24.

Multiple :

When a number is exactly divisible by another number, then the former number is
called the multiple of the latter number.
Thus, 45 is a multiple of 1, 3, 5, 9, 15 and 45.

Common Multiple :

A common multiple of two or more numbers is a number which is exactly divisible by

each of them.

For example : 12, 24 and 36 is a common multiple of 3, 4, 6 and 12.

Prime Factorisation :

If a natural number is expressed as the product of prime numbers, then the

factorisation of the number is called its prime factorisation.

A prime factorisation of a natural number can be expressed in the exponential form.

For example :

 24 = 2 x 2 x 2 x 3 = 23 x 3
 420 = 2 x 2 x 3 x 5 x 7 = 22 x 3 x 5 x 7

2
Find H.C.F of Given Numbers By Prime Factorization Method :

Follow the steps below to find H.C.F of given numbers by prime factorization method.

1. Express the given numbers as product of their prime factors

2. Check for the common prime factors and find least index of each common prime
factor in the given numbers

3. The product of all common prime factors with the respective least indices is H.C.F
of given numbers

Example :

H.C.F of 12, 36, 48

1. Express the numbers as product of prime factors.

i.e., 12 = 3 * 22 36 = 32 * 22 48 = 3 * 24

2. The common prime factors are 2 and 3 and the corresponding least indices are 2
and 1 respectively

3. The product of all the common prime factors with the respective least indices
H.C.F of 12, 36, 48 = 22 * 3 = 12

Note :
That LCM (n1, n2, n3) × HCF (n1 × n2, n2 × n3, n3 × n1) = n1 × n2 × n3.

Explanation :
HCF * LCM = 84942, because we know
Product of two numbers = Product of HCF and LCM
LCM = 84942/33 = 2574

47. Find the H.C.F of 4 x 27 x 3125, 8 x 9 x 25 x 7 and 16 x 81 x 5 x 11 x 49?

Answer : 180
Explanation :
4 x 27 x 3125 = 22 * 33 * 55
8 x 9 x 25 x 7 = 23 * 32 * 52 * 7
16 x 81 x 5 x 11 x 49 = 24 * 34 * 5 * 72 * 11
H.C.F = 22 * 32 * 5 = 180.

48. The largest measuring cylinder that can accurately fill 3 tanks of capacity 98, 182
and 266 litres each, is of capacity?
Answer : 98, 182 and 266

49. L.C.M of two prime numbers x and y (x>y) is 161. Find the value of 3y-x?
Answer : -2
Explanation :
H. C. F of two prime numbers is 1. Product of numbers = 1 x 161 = 161.
Let the numbers be a and b . Then , ab= 161.
Now, co-primes with product 161 are (1, 161) and (7, 23).
Since x and y are prime numbers and x >y ,
we have x = 23 and y = 7.
therefore 3y-x = (3 x 7) - 23 = -2

50. The product of two numbers is 4107. If the H.C.F of these numbers is 37, then find
the greater number?
Answer : 111
Explanation :
Let the numbers be 37a and 37b.
Then , 37a * 37b =4107
ab = 3.
Now co-primes with product 3 are (1, 3)
So, the required numbers are (37 * 1, 37 * 3)
i.e, (37, 111)
therefore Greater number = 111
