ABSTRACT

This research assessed the implementation of the Speak English policy in

Notre Dame Greater Manila and St. Mary’s Academy of Caloocan City. This

study looks into the issues pertaining to the policy. The respondents of the study

are high school students in Grade 7 and 10 and the Department Heads of both

Notre Dame of Greater Manila and St. Mary’s Academy of Caloocan City.

This research is based on probability cluster sampling technique. The

researchers conducted a survey to 78 Grade 7 and 95 Grade 10 students of St.

Mary’s Academy of Caloocan City and 114 Grade 7 and 123 Grade 10 students of

Notre Dame of Greater Manila with the use of a questionnaire that inquired about

the factors affecting the implementation of the Speak English policy and the

effects of the policy to the students performance. The researchers also conducted

an interview to the English Heads of both school that inquired the profile of the

policy.

The researchers performed a t-test for the two groups. The results are (1)

The students read printed english materials and make it as their hobby; (2) Both

school have almost the same wavelength in implementing the Speak English

policy; (3) The factor that affects most the implementing the Speak English policy

is the ‘English teachers capability and skills in teaching the subject’; and (4) The

students’ grammar usage was affected by the Speak English policy.
