Healthy Eating a priority?

With so much information available on the internet
these days, it’s often difficult to decide which
information is correct and which information to believe.
One area where there seem to be considerable
confusion is the area of sugar in our diets. Are there
good sugars and bad sugars? Or is this just hype we get
from companies wanting to sell us diet products? Do
we know how much sugar is in the products we might
consume on a regular basis? I found this table helpful
because it represents in a visual way how much sugar
we find in common foods.

I guess we could ask ourselves, would I eat 9 teaspoons

of sugar straight if it wasn’t disguised in a soft drink?
The Premier’s Priority is to reduce childhood obesity in
the ten year period 2015-2025 from 22% in 2015 down to
17% in 2025. Everyone, including schools are expected
to play their part in this campaign. The points below are
taken from the Healthy Canteen Policy to suggest ways families can play their part in achieving this goal.
 Substituting sugary drinks with water at home and in lunchboxes. Adding slices of fresh fruit, herbs or
vegetables to the water jug in the refrigerator adds to the taste especially during transition periods.
 Including children from an early age in meal planning and preparation. Planning meals together,
compiling shopping lists, including children in the shopping trip and allowing children to assist in the
preparation and cooking of meals spikes interest, motivation and creates healthier eating options.
 Consulting children as to the contents in their school lunches and allowing them to assist in shopping
and preparation where possible.
 Planning and creating a small garden at home for growing fruit and vegetables. The greater the
responsibility and participation given to children the more likely they are to eat what they have
helped to grow.
Many more suggestions for healthy eating can be found through this link

Devices on buses
An increasing number of students have been using devices on school buses in the afternoon. This has
led to some inappropriate behaviour such as students photographing and filming other students without
their permission. This activity needs to stop as it has led to scuffles with potential damage to the devices,
not to mention the behaviour and discipline issues that the school is then having to deal with the next
day. Students should keep the devices in their bag until they reach home.
