Adjectives

Adjectives are words that tell us more about


people , animals, places or things.

Example :-
a) Ahmad is a tall boy.
b) Wild animals are kept in cages in the zoo.
c) She lives in a big house.

Comparison Of Adjectives
We can also use adjectives to compare people,
animals, places or things. There are three degrees
of comparison:- Positive, comparative and
superlative.
1) The positive form of adjectives is used
when no comparison is made.
Example :-
a) She is a smart girl.
b) He is a fast runner.
c) The cat is a quiet animal.
- The positive form is also used when
comparing two persons, animals, places or
things that are similar or equal.
Example :-
a) We are as slow as the other group.
b) The lion is as fierce as the tiger.
c) My car is as expensive as your car.

2) The comparative form is used when


comparing two persons, animals, places
or things that are unequal.

- The comparative form of many adjectives


has ‘er’ added to the adjectives.
Example :-
a) He is older than my father .
b) A duck is smaller than a goose.
c) They are younger than I am.
- The comparative form of adjectives of two or
more syllables has ‘more’ added to the
adjectives.

Example :-
a) He is more handsome than his brother.
b) My story book is more interesting than
yours.
c) This pictures is more colourful than that
one.

3) The superlatives form is used when three


or more persons, animals, places or
things are compared.

- The superlative form of many adjectives has


‘est’ added to the adjectives.
Example :-
a) That is the longest river in the world.
b) He is the kindest person I have ever met.
c) This is the shortest way to my house.

- The superlative form of long adjectives has


‘most’ added to the adjectives.
Example :-
a) Harlina is the most beautiful girl in our
class.
b) That is the most exciting film of the year.
c) This is the most important point to
remember.

Note :-
The spelling of some adjectives changes when
they are used in the comparative and
superlative.
