Design of Reinforced Concrete and Pre-stressed Concrete Structures

ASSIGNMENT – 3
Topic: Analysis and Design of beams by Limit State Method

1) Determine the anchorage length of 4-20T reinforcing bars going into the
support of the simply supported beam shown in the figure below. The
factored shear force Vu = 280 kN, width of the column support = 300 mm.
Use M 20 concrete and Fe 415 steel.

2) A cantilever beam having a width of 200 mm and effective depth 300 mm

supports a uniformly distributed load and is reinforced with four bars of 16
mm diameter. If the factored load is 80 kN, calculate:
a) The maximum local bond stress.
b) The anchorage length required.
c) If the anchorage length provided is 900 mm, the average bonds stress.

3) A cantilever carrying a uniformly distributed load has a breadth of 150 mm

and effective depth of 260 mm. The reinforcement consists of 4 bars of 16
mm diameter. If the factored load is 75 kN, calculate (a) the maximum local
bond stress, and (b) the anchorage length required. Assume f ck = 30 N/mm2
and fy = 415 N/mm2.

4) A rectangular beam 300 mm wide and 400 mm deep is reinforced with 2

nos. 12 mm dia. bars at top and 2 nos. 16 mm dia. bars at the bottom, each
provided at an effective cover of 40 mm. Assuming M20 grade of concrete
and Fe415 steel. Determine the resistance of the beam in pure torsion.

5) A reinforced concrete rectangular beam 300 mm wide and 425 mm deep is

reinforced with 4 bars of 20 mm dia. at bottom and 4bars of 12 mm dia. at
top. Determine the strength of the beam section in torsion, if it also subjected
to an ultimate bending moment 0f 60 kN-m and ultimate shear of 15 kN.
Design of Reinforced Concrete and Pre-stressed Concrete Structures

Assume M20 grade concrete, Fe 415 grade steel and an effective cover of 40
mm from each face.

6) Determine the reinforcement required of a beam of b = 400 mm, d = 650

mm, D = 700 mm and subjected to factored Mu = 200 kN.m, factored Tu =
50 kN.m and factored Vu = 100 kN. Use M20 and Fe415 for the design.

7) A reinforced concrete beam of rectangular section 300 mm wide is

reinforced with four bars of 25 mm diameter at an effective depth of 600
mm. The beam has to resist a factored shear force of 400 kN at support
section. Assuming fck= 25 N/mm2 and fy = 415 N/mm2, design vertical
stirrups for the section.

8) Design a reinforced concrete beam of rectangular section using the

following data:
Effective span = 8 m Working live load = 30 kN/m
Overall depth restricted to 650 mm
M20 – Fe415 b = 300 mm d’ = 50 mm d = 600 mm
Also design shear reinforcements.

9) A reinforced concrete rectangular beam section 350 mm wide is reinforced

with 4 bars of 20 mm diameter at an effective depth of 550 mm out of which
2 bars are bent up near support section where a factored shear force of 400
kN is acting. Using M20 grade concrete and Fe-415 steel bars, design
suitable shear reinforcements at the support section.

10) A simply supported beam 300 mm wide and 600 mm effective depth carries
a uniformly distributed load of 74 kN/m including its own weight over an
effective span of 6 m. The reinforcement consists of 5 bars of 25 mm
diameter. Out of these, two bars can be safely bent up at 1m distance from
the support. Design the shear reinforcement for the beam.
