Mini-Lesson (20 minutes max)

Materials and Resources Needed: smartboard/projector, labeled plant diagram (can be the same as the one in
the zip kit), Play-Doh, sticky notes, crossword puzzle worksheets

Focus: (1 minute) – The teacher will show the students pictures of plants and ask the students to guess what
they believe the lesson will be about based on the pictures being shown. Once a student guesses “plants,” the
teacher will then pose the question of whether any students can identify any different parts of the plant. The
students’ abilities to identify parts of the plants and academic vocabulary use will serve to informally assess
students’ prior knowledge of plant parts.

Instructional Delivery: (5 minutes) – Show students a labeled plant diagram (roots, leaf, stem, flower, seed)
and thoroughly identify each part’s name and function. Allow students to guess what they believe plant parts are
used for if they think they may know. Discussion should be encouraged.
Guided Practice: (5 minutes) – With Play-Doh and sticky notes, allow students to make their own diagram of a
plant with labels. This should be completed in groups of no more than three students. After completing this, the
teacher should be walking around and ask students to point to their diagram and identify each part of the plant
and its function. Each group should have included the five, discussed plant parts on their Play-Doh diagram.

Independent Practice: (5 minutes) – Students will complete a crossword puzzle, in pencil, where they will
have to be able to identify what part of the plant is being discussed depending on the function listed.

Extension: (as needed) – A more complex plant diagram (with more labeled parts) can be used with students
who quickly master the basic, five plant parts.

Intervention: (as needed) – Review the parts of the plants with students and work coherently to relabel a blank
plant diagram. The functions of the plants should also be discussed throughout this review session/support.

Closure: (2 minutes) – As a class, review the answers to the crossword puzzle with student input; thus,
reviewing all the parts of the plants and their functions that we discussed throughout the mini-lesson.
