Abortion Debate Non Fiction Response

1. Babies in the womb are human. Abortion is killing people, and killing people is wrong.
Therefore, abortion is wrong.
2. A connections I can make is between this and an article I read about teen pregnancy. The
article was about reducing teen pregnancy to reduce abortions.
3. The author’s purpose is to persuade. I know this because the title is already trying to
convince me that abortion is “wrong” (Peredo).
4. The audience is made up of women who may be thinking about getting abortions. I know
this because the article is persuading people to think that abortion is wrong. The choice of
audience reduces the amount of medical jargon in the article, making it easier to
understand.
5. The most relevant details in the article are the pictures and videos it uses to try and make
the audience feel guilty for ever having believed that abortions were normal.
6. The article mostly uses Logos. An example of the author using logic and reasoning to
persuade is, “Since the preborn has human parents, she has to be human,” (Peredo).
Another example is, “[...] a heart begins to beat as early as 16 days after conception,”
(Peredo). A third example of the author using logic is, “If we agree that the preborn are
people, and we know that killing innocent people is wrong, then abortion is clearly
wrong,” (Peredo). The author exercises their credibility by using logic and facts as well
as research.
7. The three previous quotes lead me to believe that the theme for the article is ‘abortion is
the murder of innocent people, so it is wrong’.
8. The text helped me gain a better understanding of what abortion is, how it works, and
why it is wrong by using facts and videos.
9. If I were able to make adjustments to the article, I would add more emotional image such
as images of happy families with happy babies. This would make the text seem more sad
and give more of an emotional appeal because readers would be reminded that babies are
what create a family.
10. OPTION 2: Abortion is wrong and should be illegal. Abortion should be outlawed
because it is the murder of innocent people. For example, Peredo says, “If we agree that
the preborn are people, and we know that killing innocent people is wrong, then abortion
is clearly wrong,” (Peredo). The author is saying that abortion is wrong because babies
are people, and killing people is wrong. Abortion should be illegal because it is killing
babies.
