The Feast of the Annunciation, contemporarily the Solemnity of the

Annunciation, also known as Lady Day, the Feast of the Incarnation
(Festum Incarnationis), Conceptio Christi (Christ’s Conception),
commemorates the visit of the archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary, during
which he informed her that she would be the mother of Jesus Christ, the
Son of God. It is celebrated on 25 March each year, except in those years
when 25 March falls during the Paschal Triduum, when it is transferred
forward to the first suitable day during Eastertide.
The Feast of the Annunciation was celebrated as early as the fourth or fifth
century. The first certain mentions of the feast are in a canon, of the
Council of Toledo in 656, where it was described as celebrated throughout
the Church, and in another of the Council of Constantinople "in Trullo" in
692, which forbade the celebration of any festivals during Lent, excepting
the Lord's Day (Sunday) and the Feast of the Annunciation. A Synod of
Worcester, England in 1240 forbade all servile work on the feast. As this
feast celebrates the Incarnation of the Second Person of the Trinity, many
Church Fathers, including St. Athanasius, St. Gregory of Nyssa, and St.
Augustine, have expounded on it.
When the calendar system of Anno Domini was first introduced by Dionysius Exiguus in AD 525, he assigned the
beginning of the new year to 25 March, because according to Catholic doctrine, the age of grace began with the
Incarnation of Christ at the Annunciation, on which date Jesus Christ is believed to have been conceived in the Virgin
Mary by the Holy Spirit.
The Knights of Columbus observe the Feast of the Annunciation as the "International Day of the Unborn Child"

BEWARE OF THE FOODS OF MARCH

So I was looking at Wikipedia to see if there were any other important dates for this month when I discovered that the
month was filled with food; at least in the United States. March 1st is dedicated to peanut butter; March 2nd to banana
crème pie. March 3rd is dedicated to Canadian bacon. Fortunately March 4th is National Grammar Day but the next day is
dedicated to cheese doodles. While not every day is dedicated to food, some days have two dedications, such as March 8th
which is not only dedicated to peanut clusters but potato salad, and March 9 th which is dedicated to both crabmeat and
meatballs. So remember this so when March 23rd comes along you can celebrate chips and dips day in a proper way.
Your humble editor

THROUGHOUT THESE … UH HOW MANY DAYS IS LENT?

You would think this is simple. Lent has 40 days. But it’s not all that simple. Back in the days of the Council of Nicea it
was simple. At that time Lent began on the sixth Sunday before Easter and ended at dusk on Holy Thursday—40 days.
That same council also forbade fasting, kneeling, and any other acts of sorrow and penance on Sundays, even in Lent; so
only 34 of the 40 days were for fasting. Later they would add Good Friday and Holy Saturday to the period.
Next we have the tradition of Ash Wednesday. In addition to baptizing new Christians at Easter, the practice of
welcoming back on Holy Thursday those who were baptized but who had committed serious sins became popular. Those
who were to be reconciled would gather on the Wednesday before the First Sunday in Lent (which was at the time, along
with Friday a day of fasting). Ashes were sprinkled on their heads which they wore until Holy Thursday.
Here then, were four more days of fasting and penance: Ash Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, and Saturday before the first
Sunday of Lent, bringing the total to 40. So today, while the season of Lent (Ash Wednesday to Holy Thursday) is
technically 44 days, the number of days for penance and fasting before Easter is still 40: 44 days minus 6 Sundays equals
38, plus Good Friday and Holy Saturday equals 40.
Or does it? It is said that Vatican II in restoring the Easter Triduum moved back the end of Lent once again to Holy
Thursday because Friday, Saturday and Sunday are one continual liturgical celebration; so it’s back to 38.
