INTRODUCTION

It is a graphic representation of every following step in all the sequences of an activity in a process,
identifying them by symbols according to their nature; it includes besides, all the information that
needs to be considered for their analysis, such as: distance traveled, time required to make the
process.

For analytical purposes and as an aid to discover and eliminate inefficiencies, it is convenient to
classify the actions that take place during a given process in five classifications. These are known
under the terms of operations, transportation, inspections, delays or delays and storage.

This diagram shows the chronological sequence of all workshop operations or machines,
inspections, time margins and materials to be used in a manufacturing or administrative process,
from the arrival of the raw material to the final packaging or arrangement of the finished product.
Indicates the entry of all components and subassemblies to the assembly with the main assembly.

Before it is possible to improve a manufacturing process, it is advisable to draw up a diagram of

operations that allows a perfect understanding of the problem, and to determine in which areas
there are the best possibilities for improvement. The diagram of process operations allows to clearly
expose the problem, because if a problem is not posed correctly, it can hardly be solved.
OBJECTIVES

General:

Make a description of the manufacturing of a process focused on the actions involved to

obtain the final product, with the help of the process diagrams.

Specifics:

Getting to know the importance of the diagrams applications in the industry process.

Comprehend all the types of diagrams that can be used to make the productions process in
an industry.

Interpret correctly the process of each diagram.

THEORICAL AND PRACTICAL CONTENT

The carpentry “El Serrucho”, is dedicated to the manufacture of wooden furniture. For this special
activity, it was decided to make the operations diagram, diagram dedicated to the operations and
inspections in the process, and the process flow diagram, steps in chronological order; on the
manufacture of a door, the description of the required operations are the following ones:

FIRST PART

 The materials needed to make a door are sent from the warehouse to the production
department (9 m, 0.5 min)
 An operator cuts the vertical wooden rules (7 min)
 The last process moves to brushing (1 m, 0.5 min)
 In the brushing part, the vertical wooden rules are brushed (8 min)
 After brushing, the wooden rules are sent to the bonding area (1.5 m, 0.5 min)
 While the vertical rules are sent, another operator cuts the horizontal rules (10 min)
 Later, the horizontal rules move to brushing (1.5 m, 1 min)
 In the brushing part, the horizontal wooden rules are brushed (10 min)
 After brushing, the wooden rules are sent to the bonding area (1.5 m, 1 min)
 In the bonding area the vertical rules are joined with the horizontal rules (15 min)
 Meanwhile the glue is expected to dry (15 min)
 When the glue is already dry, is verified if the rules are well pasted. If the rules are well
pasted, they proceed to nail them.
 Otherwise they are returned to the bonding area (6 min).
 Then they are sent to the “front” lining area (1.6 m, 0.8 min)

SECOND PART

 While the vertical rules are brushed, the “front” liner is sent to the warehouse, that is cut
(5 min)
 This process moves to brushing (4 min).
 The brushing part is needed, because of that, it can be sent to the “front” liner area (4 m, 2
min)
 Then the rules are stuck with “front” lining (7 min)
 Meanwhile the process is left to dry (15 min)
 After, everything is verified if is well stuck, if it is, it proceeds to nail (6 min)
 While the process is finished is sent to the “back” lining area, which proceeds to cut (5 min)
 Then it is brushed (4 min)
 After brushing, is sent to the bonding area (9 m, 4 min)
 Stick the rules with the “back” lining (7 min)
 Materials are left to dry (15 min)
 Everything is checked, if the rules are well stuck, they will be able to nail with the “back”
lining (6 min).
 The ends are brushed (10 min)
 The measures must be verified and rectified (5 min)
 Finally, it is send to the finished product warehouse (1.5 m, 0.5 min)

VOCABULARY

1. Analyst: Is a person who reviews and examines data or information for a specific area or
who is skilled in analysis of one topic

2. Assembly:
The action of fitting together the component parts of a machine or other object from
interchangeable parts of standard dimensions. The final article comprises a number of
pieces or subassemblies put together to perform a specific function, and capable of being
disassembled without destruction. What can be a set at one point, however, can be a subset
at another.

3. Body (of a diagram):

It is the central part of the diagram, it explains graphically all the components and
descriptions of a specific topic.

4. Checking (noun):
Examine something to determine its accuracy, quality, or condition, or to detect the
presence of something undesirable, verifying one's satisfaction.

5. Combined Operation
The action of operating and inspecting a step of a process at the same time without having
to do the activities separately.

6. Delay:
Unplanned deferment of a scheduled activity because of some thing or occurrence that
impedes its commencement or continuation. Delay usually has time-associated cost effects
on a contract which may be measured in terms of time, money, or a combination thereof.

7. Diagram.
Drawing that illustrates or visually explains a thing or idea by outlining its component parts
and the relationships among them.

8. Efficiency:
The comparison of what is produced or performed with what can be achieved with the same
consumption of resources (money, time, labor, etc.). It is an important factor in
determination of productivity.

9. Forklift:
is a small industrial vehicle, having a power operated forked platform attached at the front
that can be raised and lowered for insertion under a cargo to lift or move it. Forklifts serve
the needs of various industries including warehouses and other large storage facilities.
10. Header:
something that goes in front of something else and is usually repeated as a standard part of
the units of something else. A header can consist of multiple field s, each containing its own
value.

11. Inspection:
Critical appraisal involving examination, measurement, testing, gauging, and comparison of
materials or items. An inspection determines if the material or item is in proper quantity
and condition, and if it conforms to the applicable or specified requirements

12. Number (verb):

Give a number to something or to each thing that is part of a set

13. Operation:
Series of functions and tasks that are involved in a single process.

14. Productivity:
A measure of the efficiency of a person, machine, factory, system, etc., in converting inputs
into useful outputs.

15. Quality:
Measure of excellence or a state of being free from defects, deficiencies and significant
variations. It is brought about by strict and consistent commitment to certain standards that
achieve uniformity of a product to satisfy specific customer or user requirements

16. Raw Materials:

Basic substance in its natural, modified, or semi-processed state, used as an input to a
production process for subsequent modification or transformation into a finished good

17. Sequence:
A series of related things or events, or the order in which they follow each other.

18. Standard:
Universally or widely accepted, agreed upon, or established means of determining what
something should be

19. Storage:
Management of storehouses or warehouses, handling operations, and safe custody and
protection of inventory items.

20. Summary:
Overview of content that provides a reader with the overarching theme, but does not
expand on specific details. A summary describes a larger work, and should include
noticeably less content then the original work.
21. Symbol:
Mark, sign, or word that indicates, signifies, or is understood as representing an idea, object,
or relationship.

22. Transfer:
To convey from one person, place, or situation to anoth er.

23. Transformation:
Process of profound and radical change that orients an organization in a new direction and
takes it to an entirely different level of effectiveness.

24. Transportation:
The process of shipping or moving an item from point A to point B

25. Travel:
Act of traversing through a geographic region or moving from one place to another
CONCLUSION

The process diagrams are the graphic representation of the processes and are a valuable tool to
analyze them and see what aspects can be improved. They are very important in industrial plants,
regardless of the size and quality of the sea. A process flow diagram has multiple purpose, which
are:

 Document a process to achieve an improvement in understanding, quality control and

employee training.

 Standardize a process to obtain optimum efficiency and repeatability.

 Study a process to achieve its efficiency and improvement. It helps show unnecessary steps
and other inefficiencies.

 Create a new process or model.

 Communicate and collaborate with diagrams that address different roles within and outside
the organization.

The most important aspects to graphically represent a process is to identify the beginning and the
end of the process. This must be agreed by the person who performs the process diagram guided
with the material or service of the industrial plant. A series of actions or activities that make up the
process take place between the beginning and the end.
