When data is skewed the best representation of center is the median
This plot is not symmetric.
Most of the data is on the
lower numbers

Standard Deviation
Standard Deviation shows how much dispersion or
variance there is from the average
OR : how far a data point is away from the mean of the
data set.
The larger the standard deviation,
the larger the spread in the data.

A set of eight men had heights in inches:
67.0, 70.9, 67.6, 69.8, 69.7, 70.9, 68.7, 67.2
Find the mean and the Standard Deviation from your calculator
to the nearest hundredth.
Mean : 68.98
Standard Deviation : 1.48

The heights (in inches) of 9 women are shown below.
Use the statistical features of your calculator to find the mean and the standard
deviation of these heights to the nearest hundredth.
Mean : 68.29
Standard Deviation : 1.48

A farm is studying the weight of baby chickens (chicks) after 1
week of growth. They find the weight, in ounces, of 20 chicks.
The weights are shown below. Find the mean, the interquartile
range and the standard deviation for this data set. Round any non
integer values to the nearest tenth. Include appropriate units in
your answers. Give an interpretation of the standard deviation.

Population Vs. Sample Standard Deviation
When we are working with every possible data point of interest, we call
this a population and use the population standard deviation,
When we have only a sample of all possible values
we use the sample standard deviation, s.
The formulas for these two differ very slightly, so their values tend to be slightly
different

Ten people attended a talk at a conference. At the end of the talk, the attendees were
given a questionaire that consisted of four questions. The questions were optional,
so it was possible that some attendees might answer none of the questions while
others might answer 1,2,3, or all 4 of the questions (so the possible number of
questions answered are 0, 1, 2, 3, and 4).
Suppose that the numbers of questions answered by each of the ten people were as
shown in the dot plot below.
Use the statistical features of your calculator to find the mean and the standard
deviation of the data set.

Suppose the dot plot looked like this :
Use your calculator to find the mean and the standard deviation of this
distribution
Remember that the size of the standard deviation is related to the size of the
deviations from the mean. Explain why the standard deviation of this
distribution is greater than the standard deviation in the previous example.

standard deviation (population) closest to zero?
Do not use your calculator.
How did you arrive at your answer ?
