TABLE OF CONTENTS
1.1 Summary
A. The work included in this Section comprises furnishing all labour, equipment, and
materials for tensile structures or metal structures.
B. The Contractor shall supply and install tensile fabric membrane structures or metal
structures of varying size and form at the locations indicated on the Drawings, as specified
herein, or as directed by the Engineer. Some of the structures shall be pre-engineered
while others require a custom design to achieve the form required.
1.3 References
A. Product manufacture, testing and installation shall comply with the following references,
unless otherwise specified or unless otherwise approved by the Engineer.
10. ASTM D 714 - Test Method for Evaluating Degree of Blistering in Paint.
11. ASTM D 822 - Practice for Conducting Tests on Paint and Related
Coatings and Materials using Filtered Open-Flame
Carbon-Arc Light and Water Exposure Apparatus.
13. ASTM D 2244 - Test Method for Calculations of Color Differences from
Instrumentally Measured Color Coordinates.
14. ASTM D 2794 - Test Method for Resistance of Organic Coatings to the
Effects of Rapid Deformation (Impact). ASTM D3359 -
Test Method for Measuring Adhesion by Tape Test.
15. ASTM F 593 - Standard Specification for Stainless Steel Bolts, Hex Cap
Screws, and Studs.
A. Product manufacturer, testing and installation shall comply with the following
requirements, unless otherwise approved by the Engineer.
1. Tensile structures shall conform to the locations and levels on the drawings unless
otherwise approved by the Engineer.
2. All materials for use in construction shall be obtained only from sources approved by
the Engineer.
3. The specific source of materials shall not be changed without prior written approval of
the Engineer.
4. If the grading and quality of material delivered to the site does not conform to the
grading and quality as previously inspected and tested or does not comply with the
specifications, the Engineer may reject such material at the site of the work.
5. Sufficient materials must be stored in stockpiles to allow for testing and approval of
such materials prior to use in works.
1.5 Submittals
A. Fabricator’s Approval
B. Product Approval
1. The Contractor shall submit sufficient information to the Engineer, prior to purchase,
according to the Project requirements, in order to verify compliance with the
specifications. Such information shall include at least the following, unless otherwise
required by the Engineer.
a. Manufacturer’s name.
b. Suppliers name.
d. Product description.
f. Storage instructions.
g. Mill certificates.
h. Connection details.
j. Installation instructions.
k. Welding procedures.
l. Welders certificates.
n. Warrantee Certificates.
C. Samples
1. Samples (applied) shall be supplied for at least the following products or as requested
by the Engineer.
a. Fabric:
i. Length 1m, width 1m of each type of fabric specified from each source.
c. Cables:
d. Fixings:
D. Method Statement
1. The Contractor shall provide separate method statements meeting the requirements of
the Project, for at least the following activities or as requested by the Engineer.
c. Installation of foundation.
e. Installation of fabric.
f. Powdercoating process.
E. Shop Drawings
1. The Contractor shall submit shop drawings according to the Project requirements for at
least the following items.
a. Tensile Structures.
F. Mock-up
1. The Contractor shall prepare a mock-up of site furniture meeting the requirements of
the Project for at least the following installations or as requested by the Engineer.
a. Tensile Structures.
ii. 1 No. mock-up per item specified (tensile structure to be fixed as per final
arrangement).
A. Prior to dispatch from the factory, the Contractor shall notify the Engineer, in sufficient time
to allow the Engineer or his representatives to inspect and test the products, if so desired.
1. All notifications shall be made by written “Inspection Requests” in accordance with the
Project requirements.
a. An advance copy may be faxed to the Engineers office, but the original must arrive
before the scheduled day of inspection.
a. 24 hours on site.
B. “Inspection Requests” shall be submitted to the Engineer during the on site installation
work prior to proceeding with at least the following activities. Minimum notification time
shall be 24 hours. They shall include but not be limited to;
C. Testing Laboratory
1. Testing of all materials shall be carried out by a suitably equipped site laboratory or in
an independent laboratory as per the Project requirements and approved by the
Engineer.
a. Routine materials testing and site testing shall always be conducted in the site
laboratory, unless otherwise agreed by the Engineer.
b. All sampling shall be witnessed by the Engineer, unless otherwise directed by the
Engineer.
d. Steelwork.
e. Lifting equipment.
2. During the course of the work, all required tests shall be carried out under the
supervision of the Engineer, to ascertain the suitability of materials according to this
specification.
3. The Contractor shall maintain a daily log of all tests carried out for the Engineer’s
review.
F. Manufacturer Qualifications:
1. The tensile fabric membrane structures shall be supplied and installed by companies
who have proven experience in this type construction over the past ten years in the
IRAQ, Gulf countries or other countries with similar climatic conditions.
G. The contractor shall record the batch number of each product used on the site and
maintain it through the warranty period.
H. The contractor shall provide the inspector, upon request, an estimate of the volume of
each product to be used on the site.
2. Only nylon slings shall be allowed for lifting products. Steel chains, clamps or cables
shall not be allowed for lifting purposes, unless approved by the Engineer.
a. Steel chains or cables may be allowed for securing products during transport or
storage provided protective padding or timber blocking is utilized.
6. The Contractor shall visually inspect all products upon delivery and report any damage
to the Engineer.
B. Delivery
1. Deliver materials and products in factory labeled packages indicating name, brand,
type, size, color, production date and expiry date where applicable.
2. Sequence deliveries to avoid project delays and to permit proper co-ordination of the
work.
C. Storage
2. Deliver product to the site in original unopened containers with proper labels attached.
A. Field Measurements: Verify actual locations of utilities, curbs and other construction
contiguous with fencing by field measurements before fabrication and indicate
measurements on shop drawings. Provide allowance for trimming and fitting at site.
A. Coordinate installation of anchorages for feature post and fencing. Furnish setting
drawings, templates, and directions for installing anchorages, including sleeves, concrete
inserts, anchor bolts, and items with integral anchors that are to be embedded in concrete
or masonry. Deliver such items to the Project Site in time for installation.
1.10 Warranty
A. Provide manufacturer's standard 10 year limited warranty, from the date of purchase,
against defects in materials and workmanship including protection against cracking,
peeling, blistering, and corrosion (rusting).
2.1 General
A. All products supplied to be used in this contract shall meet current (ISO) international
standards for design and manufacturing. These shall be suitable for use in extreme
climatic conditions with UV protection and other surface protection to international
standards. All items will be reviewed and approved on a case by case basis.
B. The finish and color of all products shall be as directed by the Engineer.
2.2 MATERIALS
A. Fabric Membrane.
1. The fabric membrane shall comply with the following requirements. The membrane
shall have a minimum design life of 25 years.
B. Metal Works.
1. Structural steel shall conform to BS 4, Grade 43A or ASTM A36 Grade 36, or EN
10025 Grade S355JR.
2. Structural steel plates, bars and tubing shall be Grade B steel formed and welded
conforming to ASTM A 500 with G90 zinc coating on both inside and outside surfaces
(average coating weight of 600 g/m2) in accordance with the ASTM A 123 hot-dip
electroplating process. All ferrous components shall be galvanized after fabrication.
3. Stainless steel plates, bars and tubing shall be Grade 316L stainless steel conforming
to ASTM A167 and ASTM A276.
4. Materials shall also conform to ASTM E 935 testing (Methods A, B, C and D) and load-
testing shall be in accordance with ICC-ES AC174 (Sections 4.2.2, 4.2.3, and 4.2.4).
5. Anchor bolts, nuts & washers shall be galvanized in accordance with ASTM-A153.
b. Fasteners: Nuts, bolts, washer and sheet metal screws, bow shackel shall be 316L
stainless steel conforming to ASTM F 593.
D. Concrete.
1. Concrete work for foundations, concrete piers and any other concrete work shall be as
specified in Section 03300.
1. Coating shall be performed as per specification Section 09870 coating systems for
ferrous metals.
A. For custom designed structures, the Contractor shall undertake full responsibility for all
aspects of the design, manufacture and installation. The form and preliminary dimensions
of the custom design structures shall be as shown on the Drawings, and the Contractor
shall appoint a specialized company to perform the design and manufacture of these
features. All structural designs shall be submitted to the Engineer for review and approval.
The design of these structures shall be in accordance with AASHTO, BOCA, AISC, and
ACI standards.
3. Visual images and animations of the final design. Pre-fabricated 1:50 scale model of
all membrane structures.
6. Provision of the equilibrium form of the surface in its pre-stress state, and to analyse
and assess the resultant reaction loads from environmental loads to the membrane
and the corresponding supports.
7. Assessment of the resultant geometry and its bearing on the structural supports, and
the way the structure interacts with the surrounding features (if necessary).
Analysis and design shall comply to the following codes, standards and references:
3.1 General
A. All operations shall be performed in accordance with the specification, and in conformity
with the lines, grades, thickness and typical cross Section shown on the plans or
established by the Engineer. Only approved material shall be used in the construction.
The embankment and subgrade in fill shall be constructed utilizing only suitable material
obtained from roadway excavation or imported fill material from sources previously
approved by the competent authority.
A. Site preparation and clearing shall comply with Section 02200, unless otherwise approved
by the Engineer.
B. Verify that substrates are stable and capable of supporting the weight of items covered
under this section.
C. Verify that substrates have been adequately prepared to securely anchor those items that
will be surface mounted.
3.3 Manufacturing
A. The Contractor shall ensure that the manufacturer has the necessary specialized
techniques for modeling the structures, material testing, analysis, cutting patterns, and
membrane seaming.
B. It is the Contractors responsibility to ensure that the shop drawing details are correctly
transferred to the manufacturing procedures.
D. The Contractor shall submit to the Engineer a method statement for the manufacturing that
includes, but shall not be limited to the following.
6. Manufacturing standards and the design life for the structural steelwork and rigging.
7. Details for fabrication drawings, laser cutting templates, and weld specifications.
3.4 Transportation
A. During transportation to the site, the Contractor shall ensure that the membrane does not
come in contact with any sharp objects that may damage the fabric.
A. The Contractor shall ensure that all pre-engineered structures are installed and erected in
strict accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements, by skilled operatives, with
experience in these operations.
C. The supplier shall provide a method statement for the erection method for the Engineer’s
review. The Contractor shall plan the erection program with due respect to the climatic
conditions.
D. Once the membrane has been hoisted, it must be gradually tensioned to the final pre-
stress tension. When this point has been reached, every part shall be checked for
compliance with the specification. Finally, the membrane shall be fully tensioned and
checked. If required, the Contractor shall re-tension the membrane as directed by the
Engineer.
E. Pre-stress shall be applied to the membrane surface with sufficient strength so as to resist
environmental loads. The pre-stress used in the structure shall be high enough that the
internal tensions in the membrane are never zero when loaded with external or
environmental forces.
F. The Contractor shall be responsible for coordinating the structural installation with all other
site activities.
G. The anchors and foundations shall be integrated with the civil works. The cables, rigging
and lifting gear shall be positioned and installed prior to transporting the membrane to site.
For membranes that have to be hoisted up masts, such as in sail structures, the site shall
be cleared, and protective covers installed where the membrane has to be laid. Rolled
sections of the membrane shall be hoisted by crane over the supports and rigging, and
then unrolled in the air, or laid out on the ground then hoisted into position.
H. Prior to erection of the structure, the Contractor shall check all structural elements to
ensure all drill holes and fixings are properly aligned and formed.
3.6 Protection
A. Erect temporary barriers to protect site furniture during drying and curing.
3.7 Clean Up
A. Remove all containers, surplus materials and debris. Dispose of materials in accordance
with local, state and Federal regulations.
