The Task: In this unit three pieces of written assessment are linked. There are 2
short pieces and the final cost benefit report builds on these two earlier assessments.
At the start of the semester you need to choose a project or a program as the subject
of your cost benefit study; for example, the construction of a dam or a vaccination
program. It is highly recommended that students consider projects most relevant to
their discipline area. The types of topics chosen by students will vary according to
your interests. A list of possible project and programs will be available on Canvas.
Please do not restrict yourself to this list!
This first assessment asks you to submit a bibliography, an impact chart and a
LogFrame for the project you have chosen. These forms of analysis are explained in
the early lectures and in the course readings (on Canvas). Examples are given in
the exercises based on the Kingsford Smith Airport study that is on Canvas.
The bibliography of references at this stage may be short but the references need to
be relevant to your chosen project. Books, official reports, journal articles,
newspapers, magazines, web resources, personal interviews, etc can be
used. Students submitted work should be referenced in a standard Harvard (ie
Author-Date) format. A guide to this will be on the Canvas site.
Marks will be awarded based on the quantity and quality of references (5-20 would
be normal), the quality of their presentation (clarity), and the evidence of extra effort
in searching out relevant references (looking further than just the web, e.g. using
journals, multiple libraries, etc). Marking will be adjusted to account for the difficulty
in obtaining information for novel or obscure projects and programs. The Impact chart
and logframe need to be explicitly relevant to the particular project or programme that
you have chosen for the cost benefit study.
