Researching Transitional Housing
Transitional housing is a temporary support system that is meant to “bridge the gap
between homelessness and permanent housing.” Transitional housing offers supervision,
support/rehab for addictions or mental health, life skills and in some cases education
and training (the Homeless Hub). In most cases for whatever given reason people may
find themselves homeless and seek out a shelter (transitional housing). Most of the
shelters help get these people back on their feet and back to being productive in the
real world. The help doesn’t stop just there, these programs that provide support
continue once they get these people into a home/apartment of their own. Its such a
great help to those who need the help.
I personally know someone that has been in transitional housing before. The home
was for battered women and children, she has two children. All three of them shared a
room, each had their own bed. However, they shared the rest of the house with other
women and children. All the mothers had chores, had specific times they could cook
and a set time they had to be in their rooms with the lights out. The mothers had to be
home when their children got home from school and the kids could not be there
without their mother. For some it may seem like strict rules but overall it taught the
women more responsibility and time management. I thought that might be some good
insight to knowing what goes on behind closed doors.

I live in the Washington D. C., so I
researched family transitional housing in
my area. I contacted New Endeavors by
women (NEW) and had the opportunity
to speak to someone named Nancy.
She directed me to their website. Their
headquarters/main location is 611 N
Street NW, Washington, DC 20001. NEW
caters to “those who have experienced

homelessness for much of their lives; HIV- positive women; senior women;
young mothers under age 25; mothers reunifying with their children; and, women with
mental illness and substance dependency.” (NEW)
NEW offers a youth
enrichment program
(YEP!) which provides
academic support
and life skills
development to the
children in their care in Fig 2

grades 1 – 8. The staff provides homework assistance after school for the children. The
other programs NEW offers are New Horizons and New Generations which provide both
transitional and permanent supportive housing. Those two programs help strengthen
women to be the head of the household and offer them and their children a chance to
build life skills. Which in turn creates a stronger bond as a family unit. NEW has three
main goals which are: to prepare women to
achieve independent living, to increase the
residents’ skills and income levels, and to
increase the residents’ self-determination.
Unfortunately, I wasn’t able to get any
information on the actually living quarters
and what NEW provides in their homes.

CONCEPT STATEMENT
This home will be used as transitional housing for women and children in
Tucson, Arizona. The style of the home is Pueblo Revival. The colors that
will be used are beige, tan, orangish brown, brown/burgundy to create a
warm cozy home for these families. With green and blue to break up the
earthy tones and add some color. Organic shapes will be used throughout
the house because it represents nature more. Adding fux fur area rugs,
thickly woven blankets with symmetrical patterns will complement the
traditional Pueblo Revival style. Also built in fire places and benches will
create that same style in the homes. The furniture will be fitting for each
family in their Apartments. Overall, aiming for a cozy homey feeling.
COLOR PALLET 1
This stain glass window embodies the vibrancy of the Pueblo Revival
while remaining true to its earthy tones. A light orangey beige or white
would be used on the walls. The darker tones could be used in fabrics

around the house and lastly, the green can be a pop of color/accent color
used throughout the home to break up the calm tones. This color
scheme is complementary. The earthy tones create a warm
environment.
COLOR PALLET 2
The deeper tones in the door were the main focus, to get away from the bright
colors mostly seen in the Pueblo Revival style. The grayish green would be a
nice accent wall with mostly white walls. The black/brownish black would look
good on some leather couches or furniture. The greens can be used for a pop of
color to break up the dark colors. This choice of colors together create more

mixed with cooler tones is unique but works very well together. All of
the different shades of tans/browns could be used mostly anywhere.
The reddish orange would be nice on an accent wall or accent furniture.

color scheme is split complementary. These colors collectively
represent happiness, serenity, optimism and energy.
CUSTOM COLOR PALLET 1
This is color pallet 3 adjusted to colorful and green added. It’s definitely
has a lot more varieties of beige, tans, and browns. All of the different
shades of tans/browns could be used mostly anywhere. The reddish orange
would be nice on an accent wall or accent furniture. With the blue and green
adding a dash of color to break up the tans/browns. This color scheme is
complementary. This color pallet created a warm, nature friendly
environment.
CUSTOM COLOR PALLET 2
This is color pallet 1 muted. This is more on the cool tones side with the
pop of burgundy. The green and blue will be used as accents more than
anything because they may be a bit over bearing against the white and
gray. The burgundy can be used a bit more, maybe in some furniture trims.
This color scheme is secondary. The gray helps people focus, green and
blue create tranquility and serenity. Lastly, burgundy creates a healing
atmosphere,

CODE ANALYSIS
5 ADAAG GUIDELINES
1: Treads and Risers [4.9.2], Nosings [4.9.3]
Treads must be at least 11 inches wide and uniform. Uniformity is important not only between steps but along each step; curved stairs, where the width of each tread varies, do not meet this
requirement. Variation in riser height along a set of stairs can be a tripping hazard. ADAAG requires the height to be uniform but does not specify a minimum or maximum height which is
addressed by most local building codes. (The CABO/ANSI A117.1-1992 standard requires a riser height between 4 to 7 inches.)
People without full use of a leg may drag a foot when ascending stairs. A smooth transition from tread to tread is essential. Open risers and abrupt or extended nosings (i.e., projecting more
than 1 ½ inches) can catch the toe. Angled or rounded nosings or sloped risers help prevent this hazard and provide a smoother transition. Straight risers without nosings are acceptable.
ADAAG specifies the radius of the curvature of the leading edge of treads and the underside slope of angled or rounded nosings.
2: Width [4.3.3.] and Passing Space [4.3.4]
A continuous minimum clear width of 36 inches is required for accessible routes, but a reduction to 32 inches is allowed for a linear distance of no more than 24 inches (e.g., a doorway).
However, the minimum width of hallways and corridors is often further determined by ADAAG requirements for clear floor space at elements such as drinking fountains, door maneuvering
clearances, and turns around obstructions. Wheelchair passing space at least 60 by 60 inches must be provided at reasonable intervals that do not exceed 200 feet.
3: Egress [4.1.3(9), 4.3.10]
Accessible means of egress are required according to the number of exits provided to meet the building or life safety code. Accessible "means of egress" include exit access, exits, and exit
discharge. Stairs, steps, and escalators cannot be part of an accessible means of egress. In multi-story buildings where stories are located above or below the level of exit discharge,
evacuation elevators can be used as part of an accessible means of egress. Otherwise, in new construction, ADAAG requires areas of rescue assistance unless the building is equipped with a
supervised automated sprinkler system.
4:Scoping [4.1.3(5)]
Elevators are required in "multi-story" facilities. There may be more than one floor level, such as a mezzanine, within a "story" but the requirement for an elevator applies to buildings with more
than one story. While mezzanines and levels within a story are not counted in determining whether an elevator is required, elevators must serve mezzanines where one is required or provided
anyway. Under ADAAG, a floor must contain occupiable space in order to be considered a "story." ADAAG defines "occupiable" in part as "a room or enclosed space designed for human
occupancy ... which is equipped with means of egress, light, and ventilation." Thus, if a building has two floors and only one provides any occupiable space, there is no requirement for an elevator.
5:Door Hardware [4.13.9]
Hardware used to operate doors, including handles, pulls, latches and locks, must have a shape that is "easy to grasp with one hand" and does not require tight grasping or pinching, or twisting of
the wrist to operate (i.e., no round knobs). Various types of hardware are acceptable although those that can be operated with a closed fist (levers, push bars) or a loose grip (pull handles)
accommodate the broadest range of users. Thumb turns, which are operated with simultaneous hand and finger movement, require a high degree of dexterity and coordination and are not
recommended. When sliding doors are fully open, the hardware must be exposed and usable from both sides.
5 AREAS OF BUILDING CODE COMPLIANCE
6: 1104.4 Multistory buildings and facilities. (IBC)
