JUSTIFICATION OF THE IMPORTANCE OF WASTE HAULING

The current cry of the nation’s head is waste management. The current increase in the population
of the country can be linked to the overwhelming tons of waste produced in the country on daily
basis. This waste mostly comprises of food waste ranging from cooked to uncooked ones,
plastics, glass, metal etc.

The nation’s capital Accra is gradually being swallowed by its 3000 tons of refuse produced
from various homes, schools, hospitals, industries. Most people have adopted some “unhealthy”
means of waste disposal. Amongst these methods are opening dumping, disposal into open
gutters, opening burning etc. These methods I classify unhealthy because, it serves as a breading
place for rodents, other disease-causing organisms, source of air and groundwater pollution. It
also contributes

These actions of most citizens are attributed to the lack of communal storage containers in their
locality, high fees charged from waste collection companies and ignorance on the effect of
improper disposal of waste.

This paper therefore, seeks to outline the importance of; waste hauling, the provision of transfer
stations and public education on the effect improper waste management.

Waste hauling refers to the gathering of waste from all collection points to an engineered landfill.
Waste hauling in Ghana has not being successful due to the partial distribution of collection
communal storage tanks and high fees charged by waste collection companies. It is with these
reason that we write therefore to seek for additional and uniform distribution of waste communal
storage tanks at regular intervals in the community to reduce the amount of improper waste
disposal. This act will go a long way to help in the proper management of hauling our waste and
eventually leading to a clean and refuse free environment.

The waste hauled, will be sent to a land far away from human settlement this is to reduce or
minimize the impact of waste leachate from polluting groundwater and surface water as well.

If wastes are to be hauled to a faraway land, waste transfer stations will be needed to help
minimize the movement of waste vehicles in other cities. The transfer stations should be made in
such a way that, it would be for both recycling and temporary storage of waste.
Waste hauling is good and will be effective and properly done when citizens realize the need and
importance of proper waste management.

Lands on which waste will be hauled to will not be left waste but rather, engineered and properly
maintained to derive energy or recover fuel from the land. the fuel will be generated as microbes
work on the waste to decompose the waste.

Waste hauling will be of great benefit to us by reducing movement of waste in drains and
eventually choking them during raining season.

We are of a strong believe and will that waste hauling and waste transfer station will be of great
benefit therefore should be encouraged and practiced.
