Question 1.A

Education is the process of receiving or giving systematic instruction. It is an engagement

either by leaning and teaching an instruction given by teacher. In Malaysia, the education system
is too exam-oriented. The results of the students are sole indicator for determining the student’s
performance in school. The current national examinations in Malaysia are UPSR, PT3, SPM and
STPM.

UPSR is a fully centralized examination where students will have to sit for five papers.
PT3 does not have centralized examination however students are accessed via written and oral test
as well as assignments, practical tests, projects, field study and case studies. SPM requires student
to take generally nine subjects and twelve subjects as maximum. STPM requires student to take a
maximum of five subjects where they will have to go through school based assessments and also
centralized examination.

When an education system is too exam-oriented, teachers and parents mostly focus on how
high the marks that student can achieve. Apart from that, parents will also tend to compare with
other people on their children’s result on how many A they achieved. It creates a misconception
that higher number of As indicates that the person is smarter. As a result, student are faced with
tremendous social pressures from their family and school just because of the As that they are
thinking to achieve.

Apart from that, over exam-oriented may hinder holistic development. When students are
too committed in centralized exam, they tend to ignore their other talents such as drawing, sports
or handcrafting. Students are also lacking of leadership skills where they do not have any confident
in making any decisions for themselves. Students are less exposed to the development programs
as they are being taught that results are everything.

In short, Malaysia’s exam-oriented education system does not prepare students to face the
outside world. Students should be given chance to utilize their talents and contribute to society
instead of thinking of how many As they must achieve to determine their performance.

1.B. Short-term action plan

In order to improve on the assessment methods for national schools in Malaysia, there is a
need to revise on the current assessment method. Apart from that, Malaysia may also introduce
multiple system of assessment to evaluate the performance of the students

Since Malaysia focuses only on exam oriented education system, it is difficult to justify
the performance of a student solely on their score in exams. The education system may consider
of introducing other assessment method such as evaluation for academic and non-academic subject
where both of those subjects should be equally put into consideration in determining the
performance of a student. It enables student to develop skills that are not taught in the book and
helps them to be more prepared for future.

Apart from that, the SPM exam for languages should also add in listening skills so students
are able to speak, write and listen without much problems. By doing so, students are able to
communicate with people in different languages fluently. Teacher also play an important role in
the performance of student. Teacher must possess skills that are necessary to lead the students
towards the correct path and provide students with adequate practice to improve their education
and skills. Teachers should encourage students to work more by themselves to answer the question
to train them not to be so relying on teachers. Teachers will only provide guidance and check on
their answer to determine whether it is right or wrong.

In short, for the current education system to improve, both students and teachers plays an
important role. Teachers are required to be skillful and well trained while students need to be more
independent in their studies instead of relying on teacher to provide them with answers. Students
should be more independent so that they are able to develop skills such as leadership and identify
their talents that will help them in future.

1.B. Long-term plan

Since education is a must for everyone in order to learn and make use of it for their future,
a long-term plan must be designed to prepare the students for facing the challenges ahead. The
plan should provide students with preparation for overseas education, building more schools,
setting up more international schools and provide technical subjects to learn hand skills for
students who are weak academically.

Students need to be educated well to prepare them for furthering their studies overseas.
Having a good result doesn’t mean that they are able to cope with the studying life in overseas
where they do not have parents by their side to help them. Teachers need to put into consideration
of the student’s interest and provide them advices on what they can choose to study in university
or college. By doing so, students will have a direction on what they want to achieve or become in
the future instead of don’t know what to do or study which ends up doing something that they may
not be interested in.

Apart from that, Malaysia may also build more schools and set up more international
schools. With more schools being built, they are able to reduce the size of the students in a class
where teacher and students can concentrate more in teaching and learning. Teachers must be well
prepared and qualified to provide a good quality of education is delivered to the students. Setting
up more international schools for local Malaysian enable students to enjoy from a higher standard
and quality of education provided. School need to ensure that students are well prepared with
necessary skills such as critical thinking, communication, leadership, and information technology
by providing adequate facilities and practices.

For the students who are weak academically, schools should provide them with some
technical skill learning subjects so they are able to develop helpful skills. A student who is weak
academically doesn’t mean that they are not talented in other skills. With technical skill learning
subjects introduced, it allows students to learn through the process of doing something with their
own hand and experiencing it.

In order for students to face the challenges in the future, it is necessary for them to possess
skills that prepares them for further studies or learning on doing something with their own skills.
Their quality of education must be improved in order to cope with the competitive world nowadays.
