Basic Workplace Safety and Personal

Protective Equipment (PPE)
Objectives
1. Understanding the need to have a safe work place environment.
2. Understanding the need of effective housekeeping practices.
3. Identifying hazards at an engineering workshop.
4. Familiarization with a work place safety signs.
5. Familiarization with a work place hazard control devices.
6. Familiarization with personal protective equipment (PPE) and understanding associated
hazard control.
7. Checking the condition of a range of PPE and assessing risk in case of using damaged/
inappropriate PPE.

Safety Procedures
Electrical lab is a perfectly safe place in witch to work, all concerned should follow a proper
procedure, Safety rules and regulation. It’s the duty of all concerned (Lab instructor, lab technician,
student) to take all required steps to maintain Health and Safety of themselves and all other users
and visitors.

1. Never work alone in the workshop.

2. No food or drink is allowed in workshop at any time.
3. Students should observe cleanliness and proper housekeeping, workshop should always be
left in secure mode, all equipment should be turned off, all hand tools and PPEs should be
returned to their storage locations. Workstations and benches should be cleaned.
4. Students should only use the equipment which are provided in this lab sheet.
5. Any defective equipment should be reported immediately.

6. Student should keep a safety distance from electrical equipment and moving machines
7. Remove watches, jewelry, rings before working on circuits, even those circuits with low
voltages.
8. Equipment should not be transferred to any other location without permission from the
laboratory staff.
9. While inside the workshop, students must be serious, alert and vigilant against present
hazards. Joking and distraction are not allowed.
10. Fire extinguisher class A/B/C suitable should be located next to the main door.
11. First aid kit should always be in clear area, easy to access with clear sign for everyone,
which should contain bandages, cleaning swaps and small scissors suitable for small cuts.
12. Serious unsafe condition should be reported immediately to your instructor.

Task 1:
Your section will visit the College workshop or engineering lab. Your instructor will
demonstrate to you the workplace safe arrangement and best occupational safety and health
(OHS) practices; including the following:
a. Housekeeping.
b. Applying wall posters demonstrating safety instructions and hazard warnings, as well as
emergency evacuation plan that will guide you to nearest exit door and muster point.
c. Providing personal protective equipment for all people present at the workplace.
d. Provision of first-aid box and fire extinguishers at the place.
e. All moving/rotating machines must be equipped with safety/guards, braking systems or
emergency stop devices.
f. If applicable; safety walkways on the workshop floor to keep you safe and clear from
present hazards.

Each student team should make notes and capture photos about the above task elements to
describe in your report how the workplace should be kept the safe and healthy. Also,
include details/ photos of any unsafe aspects you observed after reporting it to the
instructor.

Task 2 :
Your instructor will demonstrate a range of workplace safety instructions, safety information,
restrictions and hazard warning signs. They are classified as follows:
a. Safety instructions are usually show graphical symbol or NOTICE word on dark blue ( or
dark green) background and instructions below.
b. Hazard-warning signs show the hazard symbol inside a triangle and the sign has a yellow
background. Another style of hazard warning is a diamond-shaped sign with clear
symbol/ identification of hazard type inside.
c. Restricted items/ prohibited practices are shown inside a red circle with a diagonal
restriction line.
d. Safety information signs are used to guide users to the location of important hazard
control systems. In general; they can have a green background colour. The exception are
the fire control information signs which have red background.

In your team; you are required to search the internet for a total of 16 safety signs as
follows:
a. 4 safety instructions signs.
b. 4 hazard warning signs.
c. 4 restricted items/ prohibited practices.
d. 4 safety information signs.

Prepare a neat wall poster that will include the 16 safety signs you obtained with
their meaning. Include your group names and ID numbers on the poster.

Task 3 :

Your instructor will present to you a range of defective PPE as illustrated in Fig.3. Each team will
be assigned to discuss in one page long about a specific PPE in their report to address following:
a. The scope of protection provided by your assigned type of PPE; assuming good condition.
b. The hazards that will not be controlled for the case of the assigned defective PPE.
c. Assess the risk level on a worker using the assigned defective PPE.

Lab Report
Lab reports are an essential part of all laboratory courses and usually a significant part of your
grade, the dead line for the report is one week after the lab is performed.

A basic lab report should include the following:

1. Title Page
It would be a single page that states:

 The title of the experiment.

 Your and any lab partners name & identification number.
 Your section number.
 Your instructor's name.
 The date the lab was performed or the date the report was submitted.

2. Table of Content

3. Introduction / Purpose

Usually, the Introduction is one paragraph that explains the objectives or purpose of the lab.
Introduction must include background information, briefly summarize how the experiment was
performed and state the findings of the experiment

4.Material & Equipment

List everything needed to complete your experiment.

4. Experimental Set up and Procedure

Describes the process in chronological order by using clear paragraph structure and explain with
sufficient details all steps you completed during your experiment.

5. Data / Results
Data recorded from your procedure usually is presented as a table. Results describe in words
what the data means. Sometimes you need to add graphs and some calculation to explain your
results very well.

6. Discussion & Analysis

This is the most important part of your report, you have to show your understanding of the
experiment. The analysis section should contain any calculations you made based on your data.
This is where you interpret the data. You should also discuss any mistakes you might have made
while conducting the experiment. You can describe ways for improvement.

6|Page
7. Conclusion

Can be very short in most laboratories. Simply state what you have learnt from this lab
experiment.

8. References

Include your lab manual and any outside reading you have done.

10. Lab task sheet

Your lab task sheet should be attached to your report in order to achieve good grade.
