On January 20, US President-elect Donald
Trump arrived at his inauguration ceremony
in Washington. His inaugural address centred
on the theme of his campaign, giving a voice
to heartland voters who felt badly let-down by
professional politicians.
On March 22, members of the public treated
injured people in London after an attacker
rammed a car into crowds of people and
stabbed a police officer on Parliament
grounds. Police identified Khalid Masood,
a 52-year-old England native with a long
criminal record, as the attacker.
The French presidential election was held on
April 23 and May 7. As no candidate won a
majority in the first round on April 23, a run-
off was held between the top two candidates,
Emmanuel Macron and Marine Le Pen, which
Macron won by a decisive margin on May 7.

On February 26, "La La Land" producer Jordan
Horowitz held up the winner card to the
audience, proving that there was a mistake
and that "Moonlight" had actually won the
Academy Award for best picture. "La La Land"
was initially announced as the winner, but
presenter Warren Beatty explained to the
crowd that he was given the wrong envelope.
Peggy Whitson broke the record for cumulative
time spent in space by a US astronaut on
April 24. She was already the first woman to
command the space station, and on April 9
became the first woman to command it twice.
On June 14, burning debris fell from the
Grenfell Tower, a high-rise apartment building
in London, during a deadly fire. Dozens of
people were killed, and British Prime Minister
Theresa May announced a full public inquiry
into the disaster.

Team Sky’s Chris Froome won the 2017 Tour
de France on July 23 by finishing safely in the
peloton at the end of Stage 21. LottoNL-Jumbo’s
Dylan Groenewegen won the Tour’s final stage
on the Champs-Élysées.
In September, hurricane Irma hit the Caribbean.
An aerial photo shows hurricane damage in Road
Town, the capital of the British Virgin Islands.
On November 27, Britain’s Prince Harry and
his girlfriend, actress Meghan Markle, posed
for a photo at Kensington Palace following the
announcement of their engagement.
On August 12, a car plowed into a group of
counterprotesters who were marching against
a white nationalist rally in Charlottesville,
Virginia. Heather Heyer, a 32-year-old woman
from Charlottesville, was killed and 19 others
were injured. A 20-year-old man was accused
of ramming the car into the crowd.
On October 1, the Catalan independence
referendum was held in the Spanish autonomous
community of Catalonia. It was declared illegal
by the Constitutional Court of Spain after a
request from the Spanish government, who
declared it a breach of the Spanish Constitution
of 1978.

December 3's full moon was the first of three consecutive super moons (a full moon or a new moon
that coincides with the closest distance that the Moon reaches to Earth in its elliptic orbit). There was
another on January 1 and there will be another on January 31.
