A chimney is considered as a rigid rod which initially in a vertical position and depend on
its base.
The chimney collapse by inertial reaction forces will produce a bending moment and
then results in a tension
This tension usually produces a transverse rupture.
These transverse ruptures should occur at the point of maximum tension ( heavy rain ,
thunderstorm, lightning and wind )
Ruptures cannot be predicted accurately in actual cases. For the Korba Chimney case , it
was collapsed vertically to the ground surface.
According to the design of the chimney, it was considered to be safe and able to
withstand compression caused by wind.
But compression is too high due to very high wind speeds cause the Korba Chimney to
collapse.
So, it is clearly visible and evident that all the point above are the causes leading to the
collapse of the Korba Chimney.
