Project Topic: How are Modern contemporary issues presented in Pixar?
Rationale: why you want to do this project and how it links to progression plans/current
courses/personal interest
 I am Highly interested in the distinct differences between how life is presented in Disney
and Pixar and how this effects the audience.
 I wanted to understand why Pixar chose to be more realistic in how they present modern
issues in an animated format through the combined use of their characters and the story
plot.
 This topic interests me as I can study how modern events shaped the way Pixar created
their movies and how they address contemporary issues in a family oriented way

Aims and Objectives: What outcome(s) do you hope to achieve. What skills are you aiming to
develop?

1. I want to understand how and why Modern Issues are presented through Pixar, through
the analysis of themes.

2. I also want to understand how why certain movies leave an impact on modern society,
and as a result improve my knowledge on the effects of media on an audience

 3. I want to explore how specific issues are conveyed through the plots, character
development and animation of Pixar films, further benefitting my analysis skills.

4. I also want to improve my focus on specific contemporary issues within these films to help
benefit my final dissertation.

Initial Planning
What range of resources might you use/what types of research might you complete……e.g.
specialist materials/workshop space. Books/academic journals etc.
 I am going to use a range of secondary resources through the combined
use of the internet, reading books on the topic, studying theories and also
watching the relevant films and documentaries on this topic.
 In addition to this I will conduct my own primary research by recording
interviews with a younger audience, and then repeating with an older
audience to see how they were effected.
 I am also going to conduct questionnaires for a wider audience that will
cover all the relevant topics I wish to address.

What factors might you need to take into account when planning how to manage your project?

 I will need to take into account the necessary time needed to find an efficient question for
my dissertation and well as conducting research and finalising my plan/ journal

How will you plan to bring your project in for the deadline?
 I will stick closely to self-set deadlines that can be found on my Gantt chart. By sticking to
this I will efficiently finish my project on time.

How much progress have you made in meeting your outcomes?

I have started my dissertation and I am still following my plan and I am continuing to track my
progress through my weekly Journal. I have developed skills in writing and organisation as a result
as they are both key factors in my project.

How has your project changed or evolved?

My project has remained very similar to my initial plan however I have to changed my question to
‘How does Pixar utilise modern issues to effectively connect with their audiences?’. I changed it
because then I can convey my own emotions and ideas and input them in my dissertation in
relation to my research.

What have been the strengths/weaknesses with your project management so far?
I have had weaknesses in keeping up with my plan and I have fallen behind slightly however this
has benefitted my perseverance in completing my project and meeting deadlines. I have gained
strengths in planning despite this limitation as I have successfully forecasted my progress through
my weekly journal and the production of my Gantt chart.

How are you evidencing the research you have done and how you are managing your project?
I have compiled my research into a log and given it a rating and explanation in relation to its
usefulness towards my project. I am continuing to follow my plan and complete my weekly journal
to the best of my abilities in order to complete my EPQ in time for the deadlines set by myself and
my EPQ supervisor.

What do you still need to do?

I still need to complete my dissertation, complete my research log, weekly journal and my Gantt
Chart.

This can be found in the first weekly entry
in my weekly journal it shows my thought
process in deciding which project to do.
Time management can be seen through my
Gantt chart and plan where I have visually
displayed how long I spent on my tasks
compared with how long I planned to
spend on each individual task.
Evidence for this can be found in my
research log. In my research log I gave a
description on each source.
Again in my research log, in addition to the
description I also gave each source a
credibility mark out of 10 and justified my
reasoning behind each mark.
I made several decisions throughout my
EPQ and this can be seen in my weekly
journal where I detail each decision and
process and how it affected me and my
project as a whole.
My whole EPQ has been completed using
technology, however the best example
would be my website as I used it as an
additional and unique way to display my
information such as my journal.
My EPQ Prezi presentation and EPQ
feedback provide evidence of my
presentation to an audience. My weekly
Journal and final personal evaluation will
also show this as they discuss how it
changed parts of my project.
I gained several skills throughout my EPQ
which all link to my current A-Level studies.
By developing these skills, it will benefit my
future career as it will link to my A-level
studies. Evidence of this can be found in
my dissertation, website and journal as I
demonstrate skills regarding English and
Media.

On-going evaluation An example of this is my weekly journal as

presentation.
