Questions & Problems: Module Eleven, Part I
Directions:
1. Answer the questions completely—the cell will expand as you type in the answer, so there is
plenty of room
2. Type your answer in the answer column. It is already formatted so that I can read your
answer easily (Your answer should be blue unless you are using the equation editor).
3. You are required to show your calculation setup, steps and reasoning process that lead to
your answer.

When you dissolve salt in water, which compound is the solute and which is the
solvent?
2 2 Q1 Solute: Salt
Solvent: Water
Contrast the way ionic compounds dissolve in water with the way that polar
covalent compounds dissolve in water.
2 2 Q2 Answer: Ionic compounds split up into their ions when they dissolve
and will split up into 2 or more ions in a solution. Polar covalent
compounds dissolve 1 molecule at a time.
What kind of solute (solid, liquid, or gas) has a solubility that is least affected by
1 1 Q4 the conditions under which the solution is made?
Answer: Liquid solutes
What kind of solute (solid, liquid, or gas) dissolves best under high pressure
1 1 Q5 conditions?
Answer: Gasses
If a solid solute is not dissolving well in water, what can you do to increase its
1 1 Q7 solubility?
Answer: You can increase the temperature of the solvent.

Hot tubs generally contain water at a temperature of 38 C. In order to keep the
water clean, several solid solutes are dissolved in the water. Many hot tub
manufacturers warn that if the water gets too cold, it will get cloudy and filled
2 2 P1 with a fine solid. Why?
Answer: If the hot tub cools down, the solubility of the solutes will
decrease. If it gets cold enough, the solubility will get low enough
that some of the solute will exit the solution and cause the water to
become cloudy and filled with a fine solid.
If you have an open glass of soda pop sitting on the counter, it gets "flatter" than
the same open glass of soda pop that sits in the refrigerator. Why?
2 2 P2 Answer: The solubility of gases increase as temperature decreases.
Because of this a colder soda will hold more CO₂ than a warm one.
