To give or not to give? That is the universal question that Peter
Singer, a professor of bioethics, has addressed in this piece,
“The Singer
Solution to World Poverty,” published in The New York Times
Magazine. Singer says, “The formula is simple: whatever money
you’re spending on luxuries, not necessities, should be given
away.”
Singer’s argument rests on a delicate balance of human morals,
natural impulses, and decisions that is not plausible or realistic;
Singer’s “solution,” though idealistic and noble, is not connected
closely enough to reality to be a viable choice in the fight against
world poverty.
